Are you still wearing rings?

I was out this weekend and noticed a lady wearing loads of massive rings, she was washing her hands at the time but there is no way should could effectively clean her hands with massive baubles on her fingers and it got me thinking how many people are still wearing rings? I took mine off in March and haven't worn them since as you can't clean your hands effectively wearing them. Why has this not been communicated to people?

I’ve stopped wearing mine. I suffer from eczema. However well I think I rinse my hands, I must leave some soap or hand sanitiser residue on my rings, and this sets off my eczema.

latheritup · 12/10/2020 11:37

Jesus wept. Yes I am.

@OhMsBeliever

I only wear one ring (not to be confused with The One Ring, I am not a hobbit) and it stays on. My mum bought it for me for my 13th birthday so I have trouble getting it off sometimes. Don't wear fake nails or polish or anything.
Oooh, this is a very close 2nd for Winning the Thread though (not that I'm the arbiter anyway ;)

Read the thread and all will be revealed.

Still wearing them, my only concern is the potential damage from all the alcohol gel on my beautiful rings!

I do wonder if other people didn’t wash their hands much pre Covid? And if not, why not? It’s an effective way of reducing exposure to potentially harmful viruses such as flu.
Quite.

I've always worn my rings, I've always washed my hands.

I can't be bothered. Neither do I have any intention of not wearing rings because of some bizarre edict on Mumsnet.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 12/10/2020 11:41

Oh ffs 🙄

Topseyt · 12/10/2020 11:43

Surely we should be wearing only jewellery and nothing else?

I have heard that that is going to be set out in today's big announcement by Boris Johnson. 😉

Fluffycloudland77 · 12/10/2020 11:44

@Coffeeandcrumpet

I’m a hcp, I took mine off in late feb or early March. You can’t clean effectively with ring on and it doesn’t matter if their plain bands or not.

My nails are natural and filed right down.

I don’t know why you getting such a hard time on here op.

I won’t put them on again until the pandemic is over and the last pandemic lasted two years.

LindaEllen · 12/10/2020 11:45

I don't wear mine but only because I've got so fat during lockdown hahaha.

On a serious note, covid-19 is not the only virus out there, nor is it the worst - far from, infact.

Hand washing should have been something we all did before anyway. None of the initial measures introduced for covid should have come as any great surprise .. but my stepson for one was like 'Oh my god, I have to wash my hands EVERY time I come home and EVERY time I use the bathroom.' I was thinking oh god please tell me that isn't as novel to you as it sounds.

GlassInEachHand · 12/10/2020 11:45

Last year I saw a museum exhibit showing how much bacteria accumulates under the average wedding ring. They'd taken samples and put them under a microscope, and the amount of bactierial gunk collected was quite an eye-opener! Made no difference to me though as I can't get my rings off anyway...

As long as Boris isn't demonstrating, that would be a sight that would be difficult to unsee. Urghhh

If you can’t clean your hands effectively with them on, why were you happy to potentially carry germs/viruses around pre Covid, as a HCP?

happymummy12345 · 12/10/2020 11:46

Of course, why wouldn't I? Still have my long acrylics as well because why wouldn't I? I hardy go anywhere anyway so don't think I'm too much at risk. I'd say the people not social distancing and not wearing masks are more at risk than my rings and acrylics make me.

MagicSummer · 12/10/2020 11:46

I agree OP, haven't worn rings, watch or any jewellery since March - rings make it difficult to wear gloves, watches can harbour bacteria. Don't miss them at all.

Wouldn't it just! 😯 I'd have to turn the TV or computer off immediately.

Does he have any jewellery? Probably not, or just his cufflinks.

I didn’t wear it at work anyway. Patients don’t need to know if I’m married or not & can ask if we’re doing chit chat.
starfishmummy · 12/10/2020 11:50

Yes. A wedding ring and another fancy gold band. Neither are tight so can just be slipped up a little to wash and dry underneath.

Fancy rings with stones just get worn on slecial occasions anhway.

Quickchange5 · 12/10/2020 11:51

It didn’t even cross my mind - still wearing wedding ring and engagement ring and watch - still alive as far as I’ve noticed

schnubbins · 12/10/2020 11:54

Im just wearing my wedding band because I do feel that I can wash my hands better without them .

Frosty26827 · 12/10/2020 11:54

I’ve stopped wearing my wedding ring. My personal choice

Fair enough. I was just wondering why not being able to clean hands effectively was fine pre March, but isn’t now.

Wherehavetheteletubbiesgone · 12/10/2020 11:55

I haven't worn rings they do restrict the ability to wash hands. The rather silly replies about being naked are obviously ridiculous. Look at what surgeons do they aren't naked but don't wear rings wrist bangles. Its about taking sensible hygiene precautions and reducing risk.
