Would you clap for the NHS again?

First time round I was enthusiastic for a few weeks. Completely tired of it now, and would not be joining in.

@Doyouthinktheysaurus

Never did and I am a nurse.

Think the whole thing was awful.

Same here.
GetThatHelmetOn · 10/10/2020 13:23

No, as some of them put it clearly branding them “heroes” makes it ok for them to die, for them not to be provided with the right tools and equipment to do their jobs, for them to risk their lives, that’s what heroes do, don’t they?

Instead of clapping I’m keeping my distances, not visiting crowded places, washing my hands, wearing a mask over my nose and doing everything possible to avoid ending up under their care.

lorn195 · 10/10/2020 13:29

@Funkypolar I agree. Nobody wants to know unless it's Covid.

I didn't clap the first around, and would not clap if it was started up again.

I have seen how the NHS has treated those with non Covid illnesses, and it's pretty disgusting.

SteakExpectations · 10/10/2020 13:31

No. However I will continue with random acts of kindness giving small gifts to friends and people in my community.

Enchantmentz · 10/10/2020 13:36

No and I never did the first time round either. I understood the sentiment behind people doing it but didn't feel it achieved anything. I was also oblivious to my neighbours doing it as my living space is facing away from the street so it was like it never happened for me. Virtue signalling on local fb pages to encourage non participants or videos of out doing each other put me off it further.

I would have been more in favour of doorstep protests for wage increases or something more productive under the circumstances at the time.

trappedsincesundaymorn · 10/10/2020 13:45

Nope. Didn't do it the first time either. Never saw the point of it, if I'm honest.

Imissmoominmama · 10/10/2020 13:47

mamma2016

I'd rather pay more tax and give the nurses a pay rise!

^^
Well said!

S111n20 · 10/10/2020 13:50

Yes I would, dc loved it.

kitschplease · 10/10/2020 14:28

No, didn't do it the first time though either.

CoffeeInAnIV · 10/10/2020 14:31

No. I clapped once the first time to save face when I was already outside. It was pointless and did nothing to help the NHS workers. A pay rise would be been great.

AvonCallingBarksdale · 10/10/2020 14:45

No way. GP practices around here have pretty much terrified people into not darkening their doors even in emergency. I went into my surgery through the wrong door the other day and the receptionist nearly took my head off - I had a mask on, she had a mask on, and there was a screen between us, but she was still behaving as if my very presence was going to be fatal. I think we’re soon going to be witnessing the horrendous fallout of delayed and cancelled treatment. frontline staff, yes, decision-makers behind them, no.

NastyBlouse · 10/10/2020 14:55

I did the very first one, it seemed like a nice thing to do.

I didn't after that. It all got a bit snoopy around here; people posting on Facebook and residents' association forums about who was and wasn't clapping. I didn't like the 'public shaming' aspect. And all the NHS workers I know found it a bit weird/overwhelming/pointless/patronising/negative in some way.

What bothered me much, much more however was perhaps more with the Cpt Tom stuff than the clapping how quickly so many people in this country were conditioned to think of the NHS like it was a charity.

Plussizejumpsuit · 10/10/2020 15:11

No. But I didn't first time.

CovidPostingName · 10/10/2020 15:11

Never have, never will.

BewilderedDoughnut · 10/10/2020 15:17

I didn’t clap for them the first time!

BewilderedDoughnut · 10/10/2020 15:18

There is something very wrong with hero worship. They were doing their job. Nobody claps at me when I do mine.

MostDisputesDieAndNoOneShoots · 10/10/2020 15:18

I didn’t do it the first time. Patronising nonsense to deflect from the shitshow of a government.

Aquamarine1029 · 10/10/2020 15:19

Didn't clap the first time, wouldn't clap the second time.

Pomegranatespompom · 10/10/2020 15:26

@BewilderedDoughnut nobody requested or wanted hero worship. Most nhs staff were embarrassed by the clapping.
Are you putting yourself at risk from high viral loads in your job? The people who are doing this (travel, retail too) do deserve recognition but not in the form of a pretty useless clap (although I do understand the community aspect when we were in strict lockdown).

BewilderedDoughnut · 10/10/2020 15:28

@Pomegranatespompom there was definitely an increase in NHS workers and care workers wearing there scrubs out and having their ID badges on show wanting a little pat on the back! Saw one with a “I’m a Key Worker” hoodie on.

I’m a Key Worker. Don’t see me lording it over people.

aeascreech · 10/10/2020 15:32

Why aren't we clapping for the MPs rather than giving them a payrise?

sanityisamyth · 10/10/2020 15:33

Again? I didn't do it the first time!

Pomegranatespompom · 10/10/2020 15:37

@BewilderedDoughnut I doubt they were nhs, unless community/paramedics. We’re absolutely not allowed to wear scrubs/uniform outside. People were having Id badges stolen though to get worker minor perks ! We had to have security at entrances.
I really don’t know anyone who lord over other people 😮

JKRowlingIsMyQueen · 10/10/2020 16:47

Didn't do it the first time so no. I'm not a bloody seal.

Babdoc · 10/10/2020 17:10

Silly woke virtue signalling. I didn’t clap the first time, and I’m a retired hospital doctor with 36 years service in the NHS.
If I were to clap anyone it would be the carers and shop assistants who were exposed to far more people, and with no PPE in the first few months. And on minimum wage with little or no job security.
