Would you clap for the NHS again?

First time round I was enthusiastic for a few weeks. Completely tired of it now, and would not be joining in.

No, but I'll happily tweet Johnson and Hancock every Thursday at 8 to tell them they're incompetent tossers who need to give nurses and carers a payrise and stop giving public money to private healthcare and 'consultants'

DonLewis · 10/10/2020 10:14

I thought that first time round it was rather lovely. It helped my kids understand why we were doing the things we were doing, why their schools were closed, why we couldn't see our friends and family. It sparked conversations about the NHS and why it's so important, and about the shit pay and conditions nurses and other NHS staff work in. We also had a bus come down our road at the time of the clapping and we all went to edge of the pavement to clap the drivers. They loved it. It definitely made us feel part of a collective effort given how isolating that first lockdown was.

It was also very new and emotional. Now, not so much. Now I'd like to see those nurses and other staff truly being looked after by the government (not that I didn't want to see that before, but now we really know just how much they've been let down).

I'm still grateful for all the work those key workers put in to keep the country ticking over and continue to put in though.

No and we did nt last time either. If you want to show appreciation for the nhs don’t vote Tory. They don’t need a clap they need enough staff and resources to do their job properly. All of my family work or have retired from the nhs and they all said the above. They found the clapping patronising and pointless.

Funkypolar · 10/10/2020 10:44

I didn’t then and I won’t now.

My mum has to wait until December 2021 for an endoscopy. My maternity experience has been dreadful. My GP won’t see me. What NHS?

monkeytennis97 · 10/10/2020 10:45

@FubsyRambler

No, but I’ll support their claims for pay rises, better working conditions and not have their needs smothered by smug clapping instead of action. It’s now the equivalent of a Facebook ‘like’ and as useful.
This.
vera99 · 10/10/2020 10:53

If we change it to a jeer for Boris then I'm in. But no - it seems the best things we can do for the NHS is socially distance, wear our masks and stay alert and look out for our neighbours.

ThunderSkies · 10/10/2020 10:55

Haha -I had thread deleted early on in the clapping because I questioned its worth and it was deemed 'not in the spirit of the site'. Didn’t mind really, because I was going against the grain at the time, but I feel a little bit justified now seeing these threads come back.

Yes, this. The NHS need support in the sense of decent wages, working conditions, and resources.

Clapping provides none of that -- but piles on the pressure to be a superhuman hero risking your own life and mental health for your job without adequate resource and protection. No healthcare worker deserves that.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 10/10/2020 10:57

I didn't do it in the first place. I don't want to clap for the NHS, I want the government to fund them properly. Clapping is meaningless without change.

Whatshouldicallme · 10/10/2020 10:58

@ThunderSkies

I also thought that quite early on and received some horrified responses on mentioning it in real life. Ironic isn't it.

goodnightsugarpop · 10/10/2020 10:59

only as an excuse to wave hello to my neighbours (especially if there are significantly more restrictions). I had a baby during lockdown, I used to bring him out onto the doorstep and a neighbour across the street shouted congratulations, her kids were excited to see a newborn! It was a nice little moment of human connection during the shitshow of lockdown...

AuntieMarys · 10/10/2020 11:02

No. I didn't do it the first time...the only ones in my street.

loulouljh · 10/10/2020 11:03

No. I didnt do it the first time so certainly wouldn't do it the second!

cardibach · 10/10/2020 11:05

I think the NHS is a great institution and needs supporting and defending. However, the clapping was always a government propaganda exercise. Didn’t do it the first time, wouldn’t do it If it came back.

jambeforecreamofcourse · 10/10/2020 11:07

NHS worker here. I didn't like it beyond week one / two the first time around. I won't be doing it again.

But, I do have co-workers who got a lot out of the experience. I doubt even they'd want to start it up again though.

IncludeWomenInTheSequel · 10/10/2020 11:09

No and never did because I'm not a performing seal willing to be used to take the heat off of the Tory failure to invest, nor to reinforce the notion that it's a charity powered by good wishes.

TheVanguardSix · 10/10/2020 11:12

Oh God no.
Our neighbours turned into Clap Wardens patrolling the street to monitor who was out doing their duty. FTS.

LabiaMinoraPissusFlapus · 10/10/2020 11:14

No, I didn't do it last time. It was incredibly cringe worthy.

DoctorYang · 10/10/2020 11:17

I didn't last time, so no. I will, however, never vote Tory as that would help more. I also donated to a few NHS related charities that support staff.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 10/10/2020 11:20

Absolutely not. I didn't clap the first time as I had been totally let down by the NHS at the beginning of lockdown.

Cinderellashoes · 10/10/2020 11:21

I’m a nurse, please don’t clap

Instead:
Don’t vote Tory
Take care of yourselves
Follow the bloody corona guidelines and don’t be a dick
Wash your hands, wear a mask and socially distance

Thanks Smile

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 10/10/2020 11:24

No , Hell No

I work NHS , getting my masked , visored and hairnetted face out ther in patient contact .

One off , one Thursday - fine
8 weeks and the bloody fireworks - nope .And no , I don'r want a repeat .

Pomegranatespompom · 10/10/2020 11:25

I think the majority of nhs staff will hope this doesn’t happen again, we want to quietly get on with our work.
Working conditions/pay/ counselling all need to be addressed but this incompetent, vile government won’t do this.
A few of my colleagues write to local mps- the letters they received were enraging- taking utter crap ie all staff had had 15% pay rises in the past 3 years when in fact pay has decreased for all apart from the very junior staff.
I’m going to take chocolates for the 2 lovely ladies at my train station who worked throughout. Many people stepped up.

Itsabeautifuldayheyhey · 10/10/2020 11:35

No. The first time round my ndn, a nurse, spent most of her time at home and when she was redeployed there were virtually no patients to look after as she was on non-covid ward. She did later nurse a couple of patients who subsequently tested positive and transferred to Covid wards. I've no doubt many were working extremely hard, in awful conditions, especially in ICU but some weren't. I don't think any of them are heroes, a word I think is bandied about willy nilly.

First time round I think we should have been clapping too for everyone in the food chain who kept us fed throughout. Also binmen and everyone working in logistics. They didn't get the recognition they deserved but we'd have collapsed if they'd all stayed at home.
