Is anybody else actively avoiding being tracked and traced?

I am actively avoiding anywhere that tracks and traces. Aside from having DC at school, which obvs I have no control over, we don't go anywhere (pub, restaurant etc) where they would need to take our details.

Reason being, I don't want to be at the mercy of someone who may have rocked up to that place and is now infected. It's more to do with the absolute balls-ache of having to self-isolate than a desperate fear of Covid, although you can never tell how you would get it.

Anyone else avoiding T&T?

@PhilCornwall1 no and I’m not even sure what that is but happy to be enlightened ?

The source code is the actual program code for the app. It is available for viewing/downloading from the NHSx GitHub repository.

NC4NW123 · 10/10/2020 09:08

@PhilCornwall1 why would that make me feel happier about giving them my details ?

Kljnmw3459 · 10/10/2020 09:09

No but I don't go anywhere atm so am avoiding it passively I guess. But I don't blame you. I just don't trust the system that is in place.

Whenwillow · 10/10/2020 09:13

@MsKeats apparently teachers (and police, and probably others) gave been told not to use the app.

And yes I'm with @Asterion I'm avoiding going to places for same reason.

starfro · 10/10/2020 09:14

Track and Trace really only works in the initial stage of an outbreak with very few cases. As can be seen all over Europe, it just cannot work in a population with widespread cases.

The fact that 2/3 of cases are asymptomatic makes things even harder. Most people won't give accurate information, and certainly won't admit to illicit social gatherings.

The WHO recommendation is to not contact trace in an influenza pandemic.

vodkaredbullgirl · 10/10/2020 09:20

No not downloading it. Don't go out drinking or go to the supermarket or out to eat.

All teachers in my LA have been "encouraged" to use the app.

There was one story about a school where teachers had been asked not to and that was either a HT going off script or someone misunderstanding the advice that schools don't need to register for a QR code because attendance records for students staff and visitors are kept anyway so there's no need .

What details are you talking about giving through the app?

Whenwillow · 10/10/2020 09:43

Ah OK @LeanishMachine I think I must have seen the news story somewhere.
It's true about police though.

@DumpedOnFromGreatHeight

We don't stand a chance with this virus with these attitudes.
erm. i;m not sure what you mean.

even if everyone used the app ... it still wouldn't contain the virus.... Confused

00100001 · 10/10/2020 11:37

@Ginfordinner

I feel the some posters are missing the point.

Not going anywhere where you need to give out details - fine.

Going to places and then giving incorrect information, or being a typical mumsnetter by not answering the phone - not fine.

I agree that it all feels Big Brotherish, but I want all of this to be over, and don't want to be confined to my home 24/7.

Well, even if the app was useful, and had 100% uptake and compliance. it won't make the virus go away. Because people still have to go about their lives... this virus will never go away until an immunisation programme or herd immunity kicks in. And by then it may have mutated anyway - and it will become endemic and dealt with like the Flu.
Ginfordinner · 10/10/2020 11:41

I think I worded that badly. I just feel so frustrated with people who think it is clever to give incorrect details at bars, cafes and restaurants. Just refuse rather then waste someone's time, or just stay at home and get a takeaway Hmm

00100001 · 10/10/2020 11:44

@Ilovemypantry

there will not be a national lockdown because of lack of uptake of the app Confused

never be eradicated. Because there is no viable way to totally lock down an entire country. SOMEONE has o be allowed out to work/help/serve.

CrappleUmble · 10/10/2020 11:48

Mmm, and I'm not sure ignoring phone calls from private numbers or those you don't know qualifies as a typical mumsnetter thing. More of a typical thing full stop, considering how many scammers there are out there. I barely know anyone who'd pick up in that situation, even before all this. It's possible that everyone I know is a regular MN poster I suppose, but seems more likely that MN is just reflecting a view that's common amongst the general population.

shinynewapple2020 · 10/10/2020 11:49

Seems like I'm in the minority here then as I've been using it! Working from home though so it would be no great problem if I was told to isolate .

I can understand why it would be a big problem to a lot of people though , and realistically you aren't going to catch something from someone two tables away , although not sure about the servers with their masks under their noses !

Suppose staying at home is the safest thing anyway.

00100001 · 10/10/2020 11:51

the thing is though.

say you give your correct details to Charlie's Cafe on MOnday, and write it down on piece of paper.... then what happens with that information?

ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. It is held by the Cafe for 21 days. and IF they get a phone call becasue they are a suspected source - they have to uplaod it, and then at some point you might get a call from Track and Trace, saying oh btw you need to isolate.

Whats the fucking point of isolating x days later? If you caught Covid from Customer B on the 1st, and they only started showing signs on the 2nd, and then got a test on the 6th, which then came back positive an the test and trace phone up Charlie's Cafe, who then upload the information, It's conceivably a week later.... so you've been carrying/spreading it for a week - at work, cafes, libraries, supermarkets, schools.... if you're going to pass it on, you will have already done so.

and that assumes the person show symptoms, gets a test in the first place, gets one early enough and you are contacted in good time.

LindaEllen · 10/10/2020 11:51

I do have the app, but it's pretty pointless as I too avoid those kinds of places.

I am self employed running my own business - there is very very little help out there for me if I'm not earning, I need to be out of the house to earn, so if I end up having to isolate for two weeks I would be in huge financial trouble (struggling enough as it is). So I haven't been going to pubs/restaurants etc.

It's ruining my mental health, but never mind.

00100001 · 10/10/2020 11:51

and remember they went to Charlie's Cafe in the first place..

WanderingMilly · 10/10/2020 11:55

I'm avoiding the track and trace app completely. I don't use a phone that is connected to the internet, it only takes calls and texts: I do this purposely so I cannot be monitored or tracked and traced. Nor do I use Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram or any other kind of app, never mind track and trace.

However, I am happy to give my details if I go to a restaurant....only been once, but that was fine. I obviously want to do my part for society but just not be tracked around wherever I go.

Supermarkets do not do the QR in our area anyway; I have seen some other shops with it (B&Q for instance) but it is optional when customers go in.

middleager · 10/10/2020 11:56

@MsKeats

Yes. I work and am in contact with hundreds of people and then they are in contact with hundreds of people. I wear PPE I’m careful but track and trace wouldn’t work for me. All the people I’m in touch with on daily basis (over 500) I would know if one tested positive but it seems pointless to monitor them and there contacts. A friend at work in a similar role did and received at one point over 100 messages when we knew well before that x’s mother (who were weren’t in contact with) had tested positive so then x was isolating at home despite no symptoms.

How would it even work for a teacher for example - they walk down a corridor with a 1000 kids (secondary) each of those with a phone coming into contact with others on the bus etc ???can a teacher even use it??? I guess so. But in two local schools here a year 8 tested positive and they didn’t even send the year group home. Those kid’s mobile phone Will be beeping constantly. My DC haven’t got it. The app. It worries me though.

Both my sons' secondaries have multiple cases.

At the one school the head has written to parents to encourage the students over 16 to use the app.

It will be beeping all the time at school in my son's class alone 3 students have family members with posotive tests and 3 classes have been sent home.

Not to mention the bus journey!

Sittin · 10/10/2020 12:09

I don’t have the app on my old phone and we aren’t going anywhere that requires us to leave contact details. I’m a teacher and I don’t want to have to take 2 weeks off work. I see loads of people all day at school without much in the way of special covid rules (although I am distancing from everyone, I am in a room full of people). I can’t see the point of isolating because I briefly went near someone out of school when it doesn’t matter in school!

Maybe it's an age thing. I'm a dinosaur and pre-date caller dispaly, and find that the only scam calls I get are the "you've had an accident" calls, where the number is always displayed.

The ones that don't display numbers tend to be from the NHS and other organisations where safeguarding means that numbers have to be anonymous.

I had a call from Edinburgh the other day but didn't get to my phone in time, and as I don't know anyone in Edinburgh I didn't ring them back.

So, I do answer calls and so does everyone else I know.

sociallydistained · 10/10/2020 12:46

I really think it's pointless but honestly I wouldn't mind two weeks of work at this point. I know it's stat sick pay but I'm in the position to cope with that for two weeks and I'm tired Blush

I have had mine on constantly for about 2 weeks now and have been checking in (except Costa where it just won't work!) but to be fair I went to two restaurants last weekend and I wasn't asked to check in and I forgot so...

I got turned away from a chain restaurant this week as I couldn't do that Q code thingy on the wall. I offered to write down my name, address, land line number, but it wasn't good enough. Q code thingy or no lunch.
