Half term plans

Hi everyone. I think I may have offended DH as he has just told me out of the blue that he has been looking into a little get-away over half term to celebrate my 40th (as all other plans have been cancelled due to the rule of 6!) He was surprised when I wasn't keen. Partly because I'm a teacher and I feel it would be risky to go away and possibly contract cv leading to having to be off work for up to two weeks which is obviously disruptive for my school. Also I feel it would be setting myself up for disappointment if we end up isolating and can't go (we have 2 dc so 4 bubbles that could possibly burst at anytime with me and DH in education). And I guess there is part of me that just feels it's not a good idea in the current climate and that we should be using half term to stay home as much as possible so that I don't jeopardise the learning of my dc or my pupils. Am I being unreasonable? In some ways I am desperate for a break - we had a quiet summer with no holiday - but I think the worry leading up to it about one of us having to isolate or new restrictions coming in will perhaps make it not worth it.
We're in an area with low levels of infection and would be staying local if that helps!

I myself work in a school and I would feel exactly the same! I’m so nervous about going anywhere now and potentially king it back to my school!

I think you're entitled to feel exactly how you do, it's your birthday. I just want rest at the moment, so would rather stay home for that reason.

OpheliasCrayon · 07/10/2020 21:04

I feel the same. I'm isolating now as DD2 has had a fever and waiting on a test, and if I can't go into work on Friday then my 1:1 student with ASD is minus his adult with any chances causing massive meltdowns. I feel a massive sense of responsibility to my work and also to my children remaining in school. It's so hard isn't it? Covid itself doesn't fuss me but the fall out and situations like this does.

AbstractDot · 07/10/2020 21:07

As someone with two children who is an ex teacher (career changed) , I absolutely salute the commitment to your school and pupils. You totally deserve a holiday and shouldn't have to worry about the school however you do and that's amazing Flowers

PurpleDaisies · 07/10/2020 21:08

I think you’re being over cautious.

As long as you book somewhere where you’ll get a full refund if you can’t go, and go somewhere where the risk isn’t any higher than where you live I think you should go. Dh and I are teachers too. We had a brilliant weekend away for our anniversary recently and it was well earned.

Once you get away, you really will enjoy it.

HoneyBee03 · 07/10/2020 21:48

If you're not keen and don't think you'll enjoy yourself then don't go. But if you're in an area with low cases and not going far then I'm sure you'll have just as much chance of catching it (or not) whether you go away or stay at home. If you're desperate for a break it could be a a good opportunity to take one.

Bookworm23 · 07/10/2020 22:38

Thanks for your lovely messages. I'm still on the fence tbh but it's nice to know I'm not being unreasonable for wanting a break but feeling unsure about going away. I'll sleep on it I think!

Why not go for a last minute booking? That way if there is a 'circuit break' aka mini lock down, then no disappointment as no booking; if on the Friday you finish for half term things are looking okay, book somewhere. I suspect there will be late availability.

DipSwimSwoosh · 07/10/2020 23:12

Just go. Life is too short. What if that chance is taken away again?
