The Great Barrington Declaration

I watched this today and then read the subsequent articles. I found it very powerful, not least because it talks very specifically about how we protect the old and clinically vulnerable. They call it Focused Protection and argue that it is what we should replace lockdowns with so that we don't destroy our children's education, our healthcare systems and the economy whilst trying to mitigate the global effect of Covid.

World renowned epidemiologists and immunologists have put their name to it (attached pic)

It's 30 mins long but worth watching.

@SirSamuelVimes

I've signed.

Yes, some people will die. Including, possibly, members of my own family. (Some, not many, in term of percentage of population.) But human beings have died of diseases since human beings stood up and walked on two legs. It is beyond arrogant to assume that we can stop this.

Lockdown was worth a try. But it didn't work. The virus surges back whenever restrictions are lifted. There should at least be a fixed end point after which we try a more focused protection approach.

In what way didn't it work ?

You do realise this was written by a load of cranks with political and financial motivations.

The funniest thing is they obviously didn’t proof read it. They got a load of signatures purported to be from scientists. There’s loads of piss take ones which they didn’t even notice

Signed, thanks for posting the link. This absolutely needs to happen.

So many people proudly declaring they have signed it too!
SirSamuelVimes · 07/10/2020 21:36

It didn't work because every country that has locked down has then seen a rise in cases as restrictions lift, and we end up back at the start looking at new restrictions.

It did work in terms of "flattening the curve" but that hasn't been the focus since about the end of April. It now seems to be "stop anyone dying of Covid" instead. Even if loads more people end up dying of cancer because treatment and diagnosis were / are stalled, more people commit suicide because their support network has gone, more elderly people decline faster into senility and dementia because they are alone in a care home with no family visits, more students die of drug abuse because they are trying to find a way to have fun at uni when they're locked in halls and being 'taught' online, more women and children are killed in their homes by male abusers... And on and on and on.

Oaktree55 · 07/10/2020 21:36

Luckily this may make a few people feel better but like signing a petition to be allowed to drink 12 pints and drive home it ain’t going to get taken seriously as fortunately Governments have actual scientists advising them.

Bert N Ernie and Prof Badasses continue signing away though 🙄

This is brilliant and just highlights the calibre of people running the UK right now. Can we now start referring to Downing Street as Sesame Street now then ?
Juniperandrage · 07/10/2020 21:41

That's an insult to Sesame Street

Any petition will attract weirdos and fakes. The same would be true of a 'pro-lockdown' petition.

However, it is good that the opportunity is there for otherwise sane people to feel as if they're at least trying to have their say.

Many deaths were prevented during lockdown, I don't understand why people can't see that if the virus runs amok then there will be no beds or staff to treat those with other heath problems. We need to suppress the virus for as long as possible.
Egghead68 · 07/10/2020 21:53

I’ve yet to hear Sunetra Gupta defend her position coherently in any interview.

MaxNormal · 07/10/2020 21:57

Many deaths were prevented during lockdown

Prevented or slightly delayed?
And there were two non Covid deaths for every three covid ones during lockdown. But they seem to get forgotten about.

@Votesforpedro human nature prefers comfortable lies to uncomfortable truths which is why people jump on the Herd Immunity bandwagon as they think it’s an easy return to normal. Obviously reading up on the situation rather than looking for a quick fix people would realise it’s not possible and as you say hospitals would be over run /cancer other illnesses can’t be dealt with when Covid runs amok and reinfection is v likely as well as long term (costly) implications of long term health impacts.

Apart from shielding they vulnerable being impossible take a look at the deaths in healthcare workers most are young. Who this virus affects badly is somewhat indiscriminate.

It’s pie in the sky this proposal.

Oaktree55 · 07/10/2020 22:06

There are many accounts like this a quick scroll through will show you that many who die from this aren’t old. 1/3 of patients in ICU are less than 50 yrs. I know it seems like a quick fix but it’s not and it’s a proposal put forward by cranks with personal financial motivations.

Someonetakemebackto91 · 07/10/2020 22:11

This is literally heartbreaking, I have raised a clinically vulnerable child for 7 years and only in the last year have I really seen where people like her for in to the world.... the bottom.

CoffeeandCroissant · 07/10/2020 22:19

No surprise that 'the positive professor' "it will all be over by June September" Sikora is one of the original signatures.

Oaktree55 · 07/10/2020 22:20

@Someonetakemebackto91 those “scientists” are total misfits and represent about 0.01% of scientific opinion. Yes there’s some sociopaths about and yes a lot of people don’t read enough and latch onto ridiculous quick fixes but many people aren’t like that. Most realise the only way through this is to work as a community. Please don’t feel disheartened those pushing eugenics (effectively) don’t have the loudest voice nor do they have actual science on their side.

CoffeeandCroissant · 07/10/2020 22:27

And there were two non Covid deaths for every three covid ones during lockdown.

Sigh, not this again. No there were not.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 07/10/2020 23:06

I’m not sure that’s quite what the report itself actually showed. And even if it did, it concluded that the death totals would have been much, much, much higher if we hadn’t locked down.

MaxNormal · 07/10/2020 23:09

I'd rather deal in facts, and certainly not in projections by Neil sucked-it-out-my-arse Ferguson.

jellybeanz1212 · 07/10/2020 23:19

So who is going to pay my wages and how long for?

Oaktree55 · 08/10/2020 00:23

There’s a photographer who captured what’s happened in South America. It’s pretty grim to go through but an accurate portrayal of what happens if this virus just has free reign.

A sobering but accurate reflection of what the reality is that some advocate we adopt without thinking through the implications of what it means.
