Flu jab, cold or Covid?

On Thursday I got my flu jab. I need it for work and also because I have a high BMI. Woke up Friday with a sore arm and redness at injection site, but otherwise fine. Yesterday I woke up the same but felt a little achy. Yesterday lunch time had a sore throat, which progressed into a little cough every now and then in the late evening. The cough is unproductive and my voice is a little hoarse. It’s like when you get a dry throat when you’re speaking and you end up coughing. Anyway, over night I coughed more and have coughed on and off today. No temperature and can still smell/taste, but feel really rubbish and generally run down.

I’m now waiting on a Covid test result, but I’m trying to convince myself it’s as a result of the flu jab, as I’ve been completely fine otherwise My eldest DC school is currently shut and they’re learning remotely, after mass testing showed a small number of positive asymptomatic cases. Eldest DC has been fine. I’m really hoping that I get a result soon, as I’m aware other DC cannot go to school until I’ve got w negative now. Anyone else developed a cough after the flu jab?

Sounds like covid. I’ve never had flu jab side effects like that.

Triangularbubble · 04/10/2020 14:56

No. Sore arm, tired and feeling generally a bit “off”, yes. Cough and sore throat, no.

Incrediblytired · 04/10/2020 14:58

The cough is a bit odd

ragged · 04/10/2020 14:59

sounds like a cold
I've only had one flu jab in my life so don't know much about their after effects

rorosemary · 04/10/2020 15:07

Arm soreness is a well known possible side effect. It takes around two weeks before the flu jab actually works, so my guess is that you were infected with something just before/around the time of your flu jab. It happens, especially in this time of year.

Sad the cough is why I’ve had a Covid test, because that just doesn’t feel right. I really hope it comes back negative and this is just a virus in that case. I’m really concerned at the potential of having Covid, more so for DH as he has a long term condition which isn’t well controlled at the moment and I’m actually worried about him dying, but also with my BMI. Generally I’m fine otherwise. I guess I’ve just got to sit, wait and hope!

Unlikely to be the flu jab. I only ever have a slightly sore arm for a day max. As pp said likelihood is you were already infected when you had the jab. Hope you feel better soon.

I had a sore throat and felt a bit washed out the day after my flu jab this year

Frostiesfortea · 05/10/2020 01:24

I’d say flu jab. My father in law had one over a week ago and has been really ill since. Cold, cough, Sore throat, aches, strange vision and can hardly get out of bed. I’m annoyed because he never ever leaves his flat due to severe pain from arthritis so he really didn’t need the jab.

Dumpypumpy · 05/10/2020 06:15

Chemist told me last week that any symptoms after 3 days of the flu jab is unrelated to the actual jab.

Cracklefraggle · 05/10/2020 06:57

Both DH and I had this after our flu jabs! I developed a persistent cough 2 days after. I work in a school so got tested - negative but needed antibiotics and steds from the GP.

Mindymomo · 05/10/2020 07:04

I had flu jab last Wednesday and for the first time in 10 years, I have had a sore throat and painful arm. The arm was fine after a day, but the throat comes and goes. I do tend to cough a bit most days, which is normal for me anyway.

PowerToTheMeeple · 05/10/2020 07:50

Thank you.

I’ve woken up to a negative result Grin

I still feel rubbish and am now quite congested too, so it’s either a cold or the jab. Leaning towards a cold, but I feel really rotten. I’m just very glad it’s not Covid!

flu and pneumonia jabs yesterday I feel lousy

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 15/10/2020 22:11

I felt crap after mine, and the pharmacist said a sore throat and feeling like a cold was coming was common this year. My arm was the sorest I have ever had after one too - the next day DP hugged me and I almost jumped through the roof, and washing my hair was really uncomfortable. That went after about three days. I get it every year for work and am normally absolutely fine!

I had the flu jab last November as I was pregnant at the time, I developed a persistent cough that went on for 2 weeks after. Aching ribs and generally run down. My DS gets a cough every time he has the nasal spray....
