What do I do about a sore throat?

I've woken up with a very sore throat.

A sore throat isn't one of the main 3 covid symptoms and it doesn't look like I need to be tested due to it. It is listed as a potential symptom though. So do I self isolate or do nothing?

Carry on as normal unless you get one of the 3 main symptoms. If you want to be extra cautious you can just keep your distance from others for a few days & see how things pan out, but no, you don’t need to self isolate or test.

You do nothing. Treat as you normally would and monitor accordingly.

wherestheotherone · 04/10/2020 07:32

Drink warm drink and carry on as normal. Hope you feel better soon.

MiniMaxi · 04/10/2020 07:33

Yeah I guess you have to carry on as normal even though the UK’s “3 main symptoms” are insufficient and sore throat is actually very common.

Poppingpenguins · 04/10/2020 07:34

Carry on as normal perhaps with extra distancing and better mask hygiene

Mindymomo · 04/10/2020 07:38

You won’t be offered a test with just a sore throat. Just monitor your condition. I usually start a cold with a sore throat and will take paracetamol, vitamins and eat lots of fresh food.

This. Try not to spread it around but only test of you develop one or all of the main symptoms.

DH and I both ha d sore throats and blocked noses for a few days following DD's return to.school & she had a cold, the Zoe app suggested we get tested but it was when it was nigh on impossible to get tested so we didnt.

So they clearly agree with @MiniMaxi

KitKatastrophe · 04/10/2020 07:41

You can isolate if you want to. For example if you work from home and can limit personal interactions just in case it wouldnt be that much hardship. However you are not obliged to do anything as it isnt one of the 3 main symptoms.

ChooksAndBooks · 04/10/2020 07:45

Thanks.

Gargle with salt water as hot as you can take it every few hours. Make sure you're social distancing as normal, wear your mask when you're out and see if any other symptoms develop.

Northernsoullover · 04/10/2020 07:51

Personally I would test with a sore throat provided I have a fever too. Because I monitor symptoms of people with covid and a sore throat is not as rare as you might think. However as a pp said you are not obliged to do anything.
As for wasting tests its when people who get told that they have come into contact with a confirmed case that then load their entire (symptom free) family into the car for a test "just in case' which is the most wasteful part of the process...

OpheliasCrayon · 04/10/2020 07:53

Do nothing . Drink honey and lemon

FippertyGibbett · 04/10/2020 08:01

Do nothing unless you get one of the three symptoms.

MadameBlobby · 04/10/2020 08:04

I wouldn’t do anything either. If an elected member of the U.K. Parliament thinks it’s OK to carry on as normal after a positive test then not sure why you would willingly put yourself to the inconvenience when the government have said its not actually necessary to isolate for the symptom you have.

I was ill back in Feb with a weird bug that may or not have been Covid and it started with a really severe sore throat. I am actually quite prone to sore throats. I find drinking warm water helps. Tyrozets lozenges and difflam spray are also good

eurochick · 04/10/2020 08:21

Well yes @Northernsoullover. If you have a fever as well you then qualify for a test. A fever is one of the three main symptoms.

SpringSunshineandTulips · 04/10/2020 15:46

I had a sore throat last week. Started a cough last night but now it’s only very occasional and not really worth a test as isn’t frequent / persistent. Don’t feel 100% but not going to qualify for a test unless the cough kicks in.

waltzingparrot · 04/10/2020 18:17

OP - do you report on the Zoe app? I've just reported sore throat and headache ( don't have any of the big three symptoms) and they asked me to get tested. I've just booked a home kit no problem.
