It feels like people on MN are willing schools to close

Lots of threads being really negative about schools reopening. These have been largely started by teachers, the latest one being about a gagging order on the BBC. My 2 and every other DC I know are thriving on schools opening again. DS actually stands a chance of doing well and getting back on track with GCSES. DC are happy and animated again. Their teachers have been fantastic, I'm massively impressed. Friends of mine who are secondary teachers are positive and happy to be back teaching in school instead of home learning. I just get a different vibe in RL than on MN about schools. What's the reality?

Teachers were working at their place of work, or at home, same as other people who weren't furloughed.

This brings us round in a circle. Some teachers worked really hard. But the ones at DCs primary did next to nothing. And it turns out this wasn't unique.

Marcellemouse · 29/09/2020 19:51

@Itisasecret
So your thread was intended to be goady and full of lies then? Lying and teacher bashing won’t help keep schools open. You’re doing it wrong
When did I lie? And when did I teacher bash?

notevenat20 · 29/09/2020 19:52

You just made a totally bullshit comment about how teachers got to stay at home looking after their kids on full pay while everyone else had to work.

It is factually true for a subset of teachers. I don't know how large that subset is and it would be interesting to know.

noblegiraffe · 29/09/2020 19:53

So you’re going to retract it and acknowledge you were wrong to generalise?

CarrieBlue · 29/09/2020 19:55

[quote Marcellemouse]@LolaSmiles yes over subscribed state school in buildings dating from 1660s. Excellent leadership team.
@monkeytennis97 no issues so far. Recent email comments on excellent student compliance and that they probably won't need to close whole year groups because of this.

Nope, still not seeing a teacher saying they want schools closed. Try again.

Codexdivinchi · 29/09/2020 19:56

YANBU

I think it would make certain prolific posters very happy if they closed.

Luckily our school have been fantastic, the parents are following strict school guidelines about school drops and pick ups, we’re having temp checks on arrival and parents have to wear masks and we’ve not had one case so fingers crossed.

LolaSmiles · 29/09/2020 19:58

Care to link to threads where all these prolific posters are wanting schools to be closed?

Since lockdown I've seen lots of teachers on here discussing what needs to be considered to open schools and being jumped on for suggesting certain things ought to be properly planned, but no teachers saying everyone should close all schools so they can lounge around doing nothing.

noblegiraffe · 29/09/2020 20:01

I’ve seen plenty of posters on this thread of the OMG YOU WANT SCHOOLS CLOSED type. Given that they throw that at me and I don’t want schools closed, I think they’re not the most reliable witnesses.

It reminds me of the summer with UNIONS ARE BLOCKING THE RE-OPENING OF SCHOOLS. That was bollocks too.

Codexdivinchi · 29/09/2020 20:01

@noblegiraffe

just get the vibe

Translation: have zero evidence but fancied starting a shitty thread anyway.

How many threads have you started wailing and winging about this Noble? Wasn’t it one a day at one point?
ineedaholidaynow · 29/09/2020 20:02

Still waiting for links to these numerous threads where teachers are saying the schools should be closed

Bupkis · 29/09/2020 20:06

@notevenat20
Teachers who were at home could just look after their children and got paid a full wage.
I don't know a single teacher...in the 4 schools - my children attend, my dh works at and my friends work at...where this is the case.

@Codexdivinchi

Who?!

@Marcellemouse
I just get the vibe that a few on MN are willing them to close.
Vibes! Oh I see, I hadn't realised we were talking about some thing as concrete as vibes. It's funny because I get the vibe that quite a few people on mumsnet enjoying stirring it with a stick for the shits and giggles.

Lola the schools never would have opened if they went off what teachers wanted. It wasn’t possible.

Teachers : we want schools to be open but they have to do A,B,C,D,E,F,G,H,I,J,K,L,M,N,O,P ect... first. ( to the point it was impossible to ever open)

noblegiraffe · 29/09/2020 20:08

How many threads have you started wailing and winging about this Noble? Wasn’t it one a day at one point?

Wailing and winging about what?

I had ‘government have fucked up the reopening of schools’ (2000 people agreed),

‘the government don’t give a shit about schools or your kids’ (1500 people agreed)

Matt Hancock worrying about teachers being super spreaders due to lack of social distancing in schools.

Boris Johnson admitting that children readily transmit covid to adults.

Ooh, I also had ‘the government are trying to make you think schools will be socially distanced’ (that one was vindicated by the number of threads once schools opened going ‘wtf no social distancing’

A common theme you will notice is government incompetence and deceit. Is that something not legitimate to be concerned about?

starrynight19 · 29/09/2020 20:09

Unbelievable so this thread is based on a ‘vibe’ and calling out some posters for expressing concerns about the sustainability of keeping schools open under the current circumstances.
From this thread we have clear links to certain posters who are actually goading , lying and teacher bashing. Maybe we should start a thread about them Hmm

LolaSmiles · 29/09/2020 20:11

Ahh I see, so teachers discussing things to consider to have a properly organised, properly funded and smooth opening to schools is them making it impossible to open.

Got it.

CallmeAngelina · 29/09/2020 20:12

"wailing and whingeing about this" Hmm About what, exactly?

It's the negativity and implications that schools are the sole cause of rising numbers. The thought that schools should be exposed by the BBC. I've read loads of negative threads about schools opening and I'm sick of it. It just differs so much to what I hear in real life.

I have not said anywhere in this thread that all teachers are wanting school closures. It's just the same few that have been negative throughout.

@Codexdivinchi

@noblegiraffe has eloquently put the case for schools opening safely. Circumstances suggest she was entirely justified in her concerns. I'm very grateful to the teachers, especially all the working-till-2am-to-keep-education-going - I think there has been a lot of midnight oil burnt across the country, by teachers trying to make sense of this situation for their students.

Yesterdayforgotten · 29/09/2020 20:16

I'm so scared that schools will close for a long period of time again and what that would do to the dc. They have been through enough but I know it would be a last resort. I just hope it doesnt happen ad dc1 is thriving and will be so confused and upset should it all change again.

Well I can see a lot of negativity on this thread- and it ain't coming from the teachers.

I believe you. It seems to be like smokers. People who don't smoke don't know anyone who smokes. But smokers have lots of friends who smoke.

From a previous thread I learned that our experience was not unique.

notevenat20 · 29/09/2020 20:23

What do people think about copying the French model and only sending the poorly child home and not their bubble for primaries?

ineedaholidaynow · 29/09/2020 20:23

You would think teachers want schools to be a safe place not just for them, but for everyone's little darlings that they are teaching!

ineedaholidaynow · 29/09/2020 20:24

I still haven't seen any teacher saying schools should close

DrMadelineMaxwell · 29/09/2020 20:24

I'm a teacher.

I hated remote teaching and am much happier being back at school, where life feels mostly normal. My own DD struggled to the point of Camhs having to get involved during the lockdown and she is much happer back at school.

I do NOT want schools to shut. I just wish they were operating in a way that felt a lot safer than 30 in my class with no mitigating distancing or other things like masks being used. The only rules are that adults need to keep their 2m (practically impossible to do that and still do a good job by the kids in terms of their learning).
