Will disruption over the October half term be the final straw?

beanburgerandcheese · 28/09/2020 11:58

Just that - will it be the point that people say enough is enough with this? Summer plans already disrupted, millions have planned for UK breaks through the October half term just to face potential disruption again. ow long will people patience last with this?

This is what it is like for people in the travel industry at present. Nb I don't work in the travel industry

And events
and venues
and arts
and hospitality

there are going to be a LOT of redundancies over the next three weeks

Disconnect · 01/10/2020 11:38

@yeOldeTrout

Must admit that I don't like the way these discussion get personalised. As many say often on MN : they are following all the rules & still the virus spreads. The people who follow the rules will end up frustrated while the people who break the rules won't notice or realise.

And lots of spread happens silently even when people followed rules perfectly to best of their ability. I hate the divisiveness of this situation.

Yep 'divide and rule' is working quite well for the Conservative government right now.

Plus those who think it is OK to be rule and unpleasant on MN in a way I hope they don't think is OK in real life.

Bazbear · 01/10/2020 14:39

If people put as much effort into following rules and guidelines as the do to being bothered over missed holidays we wouldn't still be in this situation

dustyparadeground · 06/10/2020 17:32

I think having no money no work and no prospects will be the final straw. But the virus doesn't care about these things.

lazylinguist · 06/10/2020 17:45

Translations:
"Do you think people stop following the rules because they've had enough?" = "I don't want to follow the rules any more"

"Some people desperate to go back into lockdown" = "I'm going fo pretend I think that people who just get on with it and stick to the rules are doing it because they love lockdown, because that makes me sound less selfish and unreasonable for wanting to break the rules".

"Disruption over half-term" = "not going on holiday during half-term, which is probably the norm for the vast majorityof people".

DrSK2 · 06/10/2020 17:49

Well those who are not patient risk their health first and foremost, and the health of the society. I don’t understand why people regard restrictions as if they are against their own good. You go to hols, weddings, etc at your own risk first of all. The measures are there to protect you. How on earth can people be so illiterate not to be able to understand why measures are in place??!!

LadyofTheManners · 06/10/2020 17:57

The problem is, it doesn't matter how many of us pay attention to the (often confusing and contradictory) rules, if you get a few per community who flatly ignore it then it makes a mockery of any of us following it.
Just today, I went to my local Morrisons, a guy behind me, no mask, kept walking close up to me, no attempt to distance. I had to turn round and ask him to move in the end and he called me a very rude word.
I then went to the petrol station, there was two people in there, no mask, and neither of the women behind the till had them on either. Not one word was said despite there being "no mask no entry" signs up.
What's the point at this point? We are ruining the economy, we are making people face a bleak future of joblessness and potential ill health due to not getting help for other illnesses. It just feels pointless at this stage as no matter what the rest of us do, it's null and void did to the "can't be arsed" brigade.

ListeningQuietly · 06/10/2020 17:57

DrSK2
How long do we put our lives on hold for?
What happens to the millions who lose their jobs and businesses?
What happens when people start losing their homes?

We have learned to live with diseases far more deadly than COVID without closing everything down.
Time to grow a pair and get on with life

GreenShadow · 06/10/2020 18:08

myrtilles, I full well know what it is like for those in the travel industry - my brother's small travel company is basically dead and he is working in a care home on minimum wage. My daughter works in the music industry and puts on festivals. Her industry is also dormant (hopefully not dead long term as one it will bounce back).

But, as others have said, until we conquer the virus life can't go back to normal, so let's all fight to beat it and then the sooner we can get back to normal and start travelling again.

I am desperately sorry for those affected but for them to be able to operate properly again, Covid needs to be subdued and we can only do that by staying home as much as possible and only travelling where essential.

Toomuchtrouble4me · 06/10/2020 18:24

What do you mean that people are at the end of their patience? Nobody likes it but it's a virus, it is what it is, you can be as inpatient as you like, the virus won't listen. Odd post.

ListeningQuietly · 06/10/2020 18:32

Toomuch
The virus is not causing the stress
political decisions are

we have to learn to live with the virus
we can vote the politicians out

Grow a pair of what? Replacement lungs?

What a moronic statement.

This...

DameFanny · 06/10/2020 19:54

I'm sorry for your troubles @ListeningQuietly

But ignoring the virus - letting it run rampant - would have/will make everything worse even more quickly. It's a pandemic - there are no good options, just best efforts (which admittedly this government has been shit at)

Rosebel · 06/10/2020 19:59

I think people are going to be more upset at Christmas when we are all locked in our own homes.
Mind you Christmas isn't going to be much fun with so many unemployed and the risk that our children won't be in school.

Do explain ?
Covid kills a very small proportion of victims, mostly old.
The NHS is fucked because of the tories not COVID

Cancer
Heart disease
Lung disease
Dementia
Car crashes
all still out number COVID for UK deaths

so can we just get over ourselves and get on with living

10,000 people die every week in the UK
500,000 die every year in the UK
2,800,00 die very year in the USA

but 1,000.000 worldwide brings us all to a halt
FFS

DameFanny · 06/10/2020 20:21

So you've already forgotten when the ICUs were full of covid patients and doctors and nurses were also dying?

It's not about 'getting over ourselves'

It's certainly not about courage

It's about wearing a mask, keeping our distance, doing whatever we can to reduce transmission while we do as much of our usual lives as is possible, until the impact of covid is containable.

And maybe the virulence is reducing - let's hope so - but with infections on the up we have to be cautious because it's NOT JUST ABOUT THE DEATH RATE. It's the impact on the NHS, it's Long Covid, it's record numbers of people being off work with even mild cases - it adds up.

Unless you think we should just sling people in the ground as soon as they start coughing? And you're happy to have your bus driven/operation performed/insurance processed by whichever trainee isn't sick that day?

ListeningQuietly · 06/10/2020 20:29

So you've already forgotten when the ICUs were full of covid patients and doctors and nurses were also dying?

Ah yes, the Nightingale hospital that never had over 100 patients
because Tory Austerity means we have no nurses

Covid is not a major killer
economic collapse IS

DameFanny · 06/10/2020 20:36

The actual, staffed ICUs were full. Yes, the Nightingales were empty because fuckwitted Tories thought there was a magical doctors and nurses tree. But the ICUs we had, were full of covid patients, so if you'd been knocked over in the street you'd have been shit out of luck.

And if hospitalisation rates go up to that again, we'll be there again.

ListeningQuietly · 06/10/2020 20:37

So the problem is the Tories
not Covid .....

DameFanny · 06/10/2020 20:40

The problem is that the Tories have run down this country's infrastructure and now we have a pandemic on top of that.

But blaming the Tories doesn't make the pandemic go away. And ignoring the pandemic won't make it go away either.

Racoonworld · 06/10/2020 21:01

Kind of lost patience with it now. I’m keeping social distance in public and not having big parties or restaurant trips but we are seeing family like normal now. We won’t be stopping that.

ListeningQuietly · 06/10/2020 21:06

But many people's new "normal"
is putting millions of others out of work
