"All over 45s to shield" - one of SAGEs suggestions

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 26/09/2020 09:30

Bonkers. Loads of parents of young kids are 45+. So all those kids stuck indoors/no school.

Massive amount of employees who can't work from home being (What?) Furloughed?

How many teachers/TAs/doctors/nurses/childminders are over 45? Tons!

people with conditions should shield - age shouldn't come into it!

SurroundedByIdiotsEverywhere · 27/09/2020 20:08

Covid-19 Latest Figures:

COVID infection by age group/survival rate %:

Age Group: Survival Statistics %:

0-19 99.997%
20-49 99.98%
50-69 99.5%
70+ 94.6%

Some people (no stats available) after infection are having secondary issues.

Clearly, (maybe understatedly) we were scared shitless at the beginning due to lack of knowledge and it is now too hard to get the fear out of peoples minds!

We now understand how to better treat the virus if someone has a bad reaction and needs treatment.

It is clear that the age group who need to isolate are the 70+ group or people who are likely to come into contact with them!

This message should be made clear and for the life of me, I do not understand why it has not been done so as of yet!

SallySeven · 27/09/2020 20:08

Age is a sliding scale risk factor though. However fit you are the immune system ages.

If they choose to
Spidey66 · 27/09/2020 20:30

Im 54, and a fat cow with an under active thyroid.

However I’ve actually got a strong immune system. In the past 5 years I’ve had 1 maybe 2 colds and a UTI which was after a hysterectomy so was par for the course.

No way am I shielding. There’s no need. I’ll stick to hand hygiene , social distancing and masks ta.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 27/09/2020 20:31

It’s not just about dying though is it. It’s about the number of those people that will need admitting to hospital and the number of those that will need a critical care bed.

The median age of people admitted to ICU with Covid is 60. I don’t know if any one has the complete age breakdown, but I’d be quite surprised if the majority of the 50% of ICU patients under 60 weren’t in their 40s/50s.

If we let everything go back to normal and shield only the group that were proviously shielding, I think you’ll find those 99% survival rates will drop quite quickly.

Mine’s actually got better with age.
Frazzled2207 · 27/09/2020 20:33

Insane. I am not quite 45 and absolutely would not shield if asked to.

SallySeven · 27/09/2020 20:43

Well I agree in that I manage mine better now with plenty of sleep and a better diet but sadly we lose a part of our immune armoury apparently.

Google thymus gland immunity.

MJMG2015 · 27/09/2020 20:45

@Poppingnostopping

It's up to us who are a bit more mature and not hysterical to carry on!

Do those of us with vulnerabilities & concerns are hysterical?

Charming.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 27/09/2020 20:53

I think it’s more a case of ‘the elderly & vulnerable should isolate unless it affects me in any way, in which case it’s a ridiculous idea’.

MadameBlobby · 27/09/2020 20:55

I’m sorry but my purpose in life is not to protect the NHS from me, who helps pay for it, having to use it. Absolutely ridiculous suggestion.

rosedrop · 27/09/2020 22:44

I am 69 and if sound mind. I am fit. Walk miles each week. Have been a vegetarian for over 30 years and the only delivery I have is my fruit and veg farm delivery every week. My mind is as active as it was decades ago and I obtained a second class degree in English Literature 3 years ago. Without being flippant I would rather catch Covid and die than spend my days stuck in my house for days on end. In fact I would be more of a drain on the NHS because I would actually go out of my mind and they would have to cart me off.

Chestergirl39 · 27/09/2020 23:28

Would love to know what numpty suggested this, obviously someone not very in touch with the real world!

On the other hand if someone wants to pay dh and me our salaries to stay at home and home school our kids it will make a pleasant change to working on the wards! Mind you there wouldn’t be many others left to work on the wards....

Aridane · 27/09/2020 23:50

You gotta love this thread - shielding is fine for the ‘elderly’ or ‘vulnerable’, whom we other, but god forbid we should have to shield

Aridane · 27/09/2020 23:53

If they implemented this as a policy then virtually all of the government would have to shield. Grin

Exactly.

Funny how shielding becomes too much as soon as one of the people calling for it for certain groups becomes that group.

They might discover that due to a freak genetic twist people with a long middle toe are at an increased covid risk...would love to see how many people that would put into category then who had previously been yelling to let them get on with their life

Oh yes, we must get on with our lives. Let the vulnerable stay indoors. Says all vulnerable
bemusedmoose · 28/09/2020 17:06

well that would be the UK pretty much stopped in it's tracks.

I'm late 30s, no underlying health issues and I was really ill with it so i can see both sides of the coin. But i cant think of anything in the country that would still function without anyone over 45.

Ddot · 02/10/2020 19:55

I know this is slightly off subject but my other half overheard this conversation in a store, are you ready. Two woman in their 30s, one said I'm not wearing a mask cos I have underlying health issues, the other said well I wear a mask for twelve hours a day cos I'm a nurse so I'm not going to wear one when I'm not working! This took place in a town centre (north) and covid is bad there. We are never going to slow it down with that attitude.

Treesofwood · 02/10/2020 20:43

Ddot You do realise that masks only reduce chance of transmission by something like 6% if that? That's if they are worn properly. If not then they probably have no impact whatsoever. Interesting research FROM Switzerland too. Masks are not going to save us.

Treesofwood · 02/10/2020 20:44

I think your husband probably should have videoed their conversation and then called the police.

Do you have a link for that?
