Are you cleaning Shopping?

As the title says are you cleaning shopping from the supermarket?

I've been going over shopping with an antibacterial wipe but some of my friends don't bother and was wondering what everyone else is doing?

OP posts:
AnxiousAlpaca · 24/09/2020 23:11

I did it once. Way back in March, and it was more time and effort than I was prepared to give ever time I went shopping. If I’m going to get Covid it’ll be at work teaching. Already had one scare this week but all good [phew]

Landlockedinlockdown · 24/09/2020 23:12

Nope. Just give it all a quick lick and pop it straight in the cupboard.

Billi77 · 24/09/2020 23:13

No. But I was leaving things in direct sunlight. Apparently it kills the virus within 10 minutes. Not a good idea with food...

emmetgirl · 24/09/2020 23:13

No and I never did. Good grief.

Slightlybrwnbanana · 24/09/2020 23:15

Well I have to clean everything I touch at work so I don't see this as much different

PivotPivott · 24/09/2020 23:17

Yes. It's okay people getting snarky and sarcastic but I say do whatever you feel comfortable with. There is evidence it can live on shopping, money etc albeit apparently small. I'd rather not take the risk because I couldn't be bothered to take 10 minutes out of my time during a pandemic to wipe something down.

I implore people to read this article: amp.theatlantic.com/amp/article/614599/
Studies that suggested coronavirus could live on surfaces and infect people who later touched them have been discredited. By obsessing over cleaning surfaces we are wasting time that could be spent reducing the real risks or educating people in order to reduce them.

That's like saying it can't live on your hands... as soon as you touch something it can spread anything. Hmm
ManxiousCat · 24/09/2020 23:19

No.... have a word with yourself !

ApplesinmyPocket · 24/09/2020 23:22

No, I never have and I don't plan to. Evidence seems strong that the risk is incredibly small from this.

ButterflyRuns · 24/09/2020 23:22

Nope.

BrazenlyDefying · 24/09/2020 23:23

NO. Never have, never will. Utterly and totally pointless, and a complete waste of time.

AmelieTaylor · 24/09/2020 23:23

Yes.

I quarantine any non fridge/freezer items, & wash fridge freezer items in fresh cold water & fairy liquid. Except for veg which goes in the veg drawer & gets washed as I go.

Once you get into a good routine it doesn't take long & I prefer to put clean items in the fridge/freezer.

I don't need the approval of the rude people on here - thankfully.

BrazenlyDefying · 24/09/2020 23:24

Well I imagined a lot of people did it in March

They really didn't.

Mrsdoubtfireswig · 24/09/2020 23:27

I did in March / April when had quite bad anxiety over it all but once I stopped I felt better and I won’t be starting it again.

I don’t antibac DS hands either or wipe down shopping trolleys or quarantine post or parcels.

The only precautions I’m taking is washing hands when get home and wearing masks when out as required

MJMG2015 · 24/09/2020 23:28

@PinkPiranha11

Oh FGS not this again. The Loons ate back...
Calling people taking more precautions than you 'loons' is realky rather nasty, why do you do that?

I used to but stopped when I read this. New evidence is coming out all the time.

Thanks for this @GreenPlum We have been , (and tbh I'm bloody sick of it )but this is a great article and I shall actually not be filled with the dread of the online delivery tomorrow arriving and putting everything away wiped before the kids launch themselves on it! Smile

Oh God, not this again. Mumsnet is the eleventh (or tenth, if you discount the Lost Canto) circle of Hell when it comes to Covid.
Cheetahfajita · 24/09/2020 23:39

Yes we do.

I've seen people sneeze into their hands and them pick things up and put them back. It's gross.

GreenPlum · 24/09/2020 23:50

Sogi- You're welcome! Glad to have helped .) x

ktp100 · 25/09/2020 00:03

Government guidelines for wiping down shopping only ever mentioned delivered groceries. I guess because different people pick & pack and then deliver the bags within a short time frame.

Tadpolesandfroglets · 25/09/2020 07:13

@CrunchyCarrot I hate to say it but it’s never going to be ‘over’. It’s hear now and we need to learn to live with it like we do the common cold. Hopefully there will be vaccines, like for flu, in the nearish future but thinking it’s going to miraculously disappear is unfortunately not going to happen so you’ll be washing your shopping for a very long time.

KatherineJaneway · 25/09/2020 07:17

I have continued to wipe my shopping down. I did think I should not bother to continue but for some reason I still do it.

Ettyy89 · 25/09/2020 07:57

Thank you to those who have commented with helpful articles.

I'm surprised at some of the responses on here being rather rude and ridiculing to those that take extra precautions. We're all going through this pandemic together and I think we just need to remember to be kind to each other.

Everyone's different and doing what makes them feel comfortable.

Slightlybrwnbanana · 25/09/2020 08:11

If you don't wipe shopping that's delivered, and have children at school, I wonder if you are ok with me stopping the endless process of wiping desks, door handles, cleaning glue sticks and pencils, and can I share worksheets and textbooks between classes from now on? Perhaps you would be ok with that, but I'd probably be disciplined by my employer if I stopped.
