Not all areas in UK have rising cases

If you look at this map and click "On the rise' you can see that many places are, well, not...

at least half of England (most of Scotland is though)

Just thought this was interesting. As you would think, hearing the news, everywhere was having a rise in cases.

There's a big difference in areas, not only rural / cities either, not only London but also Bristol has low numbers.

Sick people go to hospital
Every person turning up at A&E is tested
as is every other admission to the hospital.

If the number of COVID cases in the hospital is not rising
then people are not getting sick

You really don't have a clue what's going on now, the people turning up in hospital are infections from 3 weeks ago.

The point is - the low case numbers now are unreliable.

@RepeatSwan

The fact most of Scotland is rising and some of England is not could be linked to the fact you can get a test in Scotland and not so much in England.

I think England's figures are bullshit.

Yep this 100%.

Saying well we are testing more so picking up more cases is bs. How many cases (symptomatic and asymptomatic) are not being caught as the tests are just not there. Scotland today recorded its highest number of cases (since the pandemic began I believe), England jumped by 2000 (approx) in 24 hours (deaths mirrored 17th March - 2 days before schools closed). We need more tests in England - we are on a very slippery slope, I would be very surprised if cases are really not climbing everywhere.

ThatDamnScientist · 23/09/2020 20:15
  • death figure is 37 today - I didn't articulate that very well!
iolaus · 23/09/2020 20:53

I hope your areas stay safe

I live in a local lockdown area - we have had stupid numbers of positive tests lately and it's increasing massively (cases doubled since yesterday)

An hour ago the local hospital has said they have closed two wards as they have 34 inpatients now. We've had 2 deaths today within the trust too

The amount of schools where there are confirmed cases is huge locally.

I'm hoping this isn't the start of it rising exponentially - but I am worried it may be

ListeningQuietly · 23/09/2020 22:39

I'm seeing lots of posts about the numbers of positive tests
but NOT about the total numbers of tests
and the numbers of inconclusive
and the numbers of negative
and the numbers of repeat tests

and without those latter numbers, the first one is meaningless

Mumisnotmyonlyname · 23/09/2020 23:22

It is completely obvious that the numbers are not accurate and that nobody knows anything even a tenth accurate.

planningaheadtoday · 24/09/2020 00:21

The map shows my area as low, as low as it gets.
But I know of 5 family groups locally all symptomatic and isolating.
However, the NHS covid checker app reports my postcode as medium (rising risk), which I think is more accurate.

This has really made me wonder recently. Given that Cornwall was so very busy this summer with tourists coming and going from all over the country yet infections all summer remained very low, surely thars worth investigating

I live in a SW seaside town and I've been thinking about this too. Our case numbers are very low (rising but still low) but it's been busier than ever this summer, presumably because people have stayed in the UK. I have no evidence but a few theories about why we haven't had large numbers of infections over the summer when we might have expected to.

Face masks were introduced in July and lots of visitor activities would have been outdoors. Visitors would (mostly) not have been mixing with households locally.
The town was so crowded that social distancing was difficult and some locals avoided it during the busiest period and so were not exposed to any visitors that may have had the virus. This is anecdotal, based on a relatively small sample of "people I know", mostly dog owners.
Holiday makers may have had more contact with each other (than the local community) on beaches, in cafes and at attractions and unknowingly taken the virus home with them.
The weather contributed to reduced transmission.

It will be interesting to see how things develop over the winter

Most of Scotland isn't rising. It's all around Glasgow. Sturgeon failed to lock down her precious SNP loving Glasgow. So it soread round Dumbarton. Yet she locked down all of Aberdeen at 83 cases

In the highlands and grampian we have low cases. Some areas have no cases. So we are sanctioned completely unfairly. N.S. is losing a lot of respect up here.

RepeatSwan · 24/09/2020 06:10

@Torvean32

There is more testing availability in Scotland than England was my point.

I don't really understand why people think Sturgeon didn't lockdown Glasgow because it's an SNP area, it would make more sense to protect strongholds.

I think those who don't like her politics will find something to criticise.

But she's shown up every day, she's working hard. Look at the mess in the UK - Johnson barely knows what's going on!

This was interesting, on the above..
