Not all areas in UK have rising cases

If you look at this map and click "On the rise' you can see that many places are, well, not...

at least half of England (most of Scotland is though)

Just thought this was interesting. As you would think, hearing the news, everywhere was having a rise in cases.

There's a big difference in areas, not only rural / cities either, not only London but also Bristol has low numbers.

If people are ill they will end up in hospital.
If hospital admissions are not rising, people are not getting ill
Testing or no testing

Orangeblossom7777 · 23/09/2020 16:01

I'm in a small city near Bristol - we had a few cases in local town nearby in the council area and a few in students but seems about it so far- mind you a secondary school did close to a year group this week (near the university).

Cases have doubled in our area. Still reassuringly low per 100K though

Witchend · 23/09/2020 17:04

Our area is low and falling. However my parents' area was like that two weeks ago. They're now an area of intervention.

But we're SE surrounded by fairly low areas, they were NW surrounded by high areas. I predict we'll start rising by next week.

Orangeblossom7777 · 23/09/2020 17:29

I do wonder about the testing though, apparently it is not being targeted at hotspots- could we just have rising cases but not know? I guess time will tell.

now being targeted at hotspots, I mean.

Where I am is up slightly on last week, but the numbers were actually much higher in August, which surprised me. Presumably down to an outbreak somewhere and/or people bringing it back from holidays.

RepeatSwan · 23/09/2020 18:52

I feel like getting a megaphone and shouting AREAS SHOWING LOW CASES ARE PROBABLY JUST AREAS WHERE PEOPLE CAN'T GET TESTED.

I don't understand why people are reassured. The testing system is broken.

Bagelsandbrie · 23/09/2020 18:55

We live in South Norfolk which is a low case area BUT everyone we know is struggling to get tests and as we are so rural the testing centres are few and far between - not everyone can drive 60-80 miles to get a test! So lots of people just aren’t testing or can’t test which is making the cases seem lower than they are.

The hospital data is key
in my area, despite HUGE influxes of people in the warm weather
the number of people in the hospitals remains in low single digits

Testing is irrelevant to that
People are not getting sick enough to go to hospital
so whatever the testing and apps say
people are NOT getting ill

mumwon · 23/09/2020 19:18

repeat
not getting ill
yet
it takes time for the illness to take hold - several weeks usually
& sadly a few more when people die
& the networks of disease move across areas at different rates & starts in younger people (generally less likely to become as sick - although this isn't always the case) & than carries over to the more vulnerable or older people (ie via care homes when perhaps the carers catch from the general community & pass it on or the care users get it from hospitalization).

HesterShaw1 · 23/09/2020 19:43

@Whirlwind14

I’m in Cornwall and it’s concerning. We stayed relatively low here, even during the peak tourist season but numbers are shooting up now...
I'm in Cornwall too.

I've seen nothing to suggest figures are "shooting" up though.

TheWindOnTheMoon · 23/09/2020 19:48

Our part of Wiltshire is low. Our village has only had one recorded covid death so far. Hoping it stays low & a good place to see out the storm this winter.

Not here, RepeatSwan. Not yet at least. No one I know knows anyone who has died of Covid. Even when we were promised a MASS SPIKE over the summer because of the tourists, it didn't happen.

This has really made me wonder recently. Given that Cornwall was so very busy this summer with tourists coming and going from all over the country yet infections all summer remained very low, surely thars worth investigating

Outdoor transmission really can't be a thing. Obviously now it's darker and colder and more indoor things are open, this could change.

We need to do as much stuff as possible outside if we get a semi dry winter.

hedgehogger1 · 23/09/2020 19:53

Apparently in my area you've got a 20% chance of getting a test if you need one for the last week or so. Funnily enough confirmed cases are now just over 20% of what they were. I don't think we really know what's going on

Firef1y72 · 23/09/2020 19:54

Numbers are so low where I live that 3 cases made a spike, consistantly at 0/1 case/day, same with neighbouring district. Larger town on other side also low. Hospitals are virtually empty and whole area (East of England) showing 0 hospital deaths for days at a time, I'm usually uite surprised when one appears in the data.

RepeatSwan · 23/09/2020 19:55

Agree SW appears to be genuinely low cases!

Admissions are rising.

This was all explained the other day by whitty.

ListeningQuietly · 23/09/2020 19:57

mumwon
after 500,000 people crowded onto one beach on one day
there was no rise in hospital admissions

The doom mongers keep telling us that the cases will rise
next week
but next week has not come
for the last six months

ListeningQuietly · 23/09/2020 19:59

Whitty gave out lovely national numbers
BUT
the number IN HOSPITAL are not rising in this area

RepeatSwan · 23/09/2020 19:59

Hmm at the doom monger expression, so juvenile.

Nor in mind be yet. But people can't get tests so we don't have a clue.
RepeatSwan · 23/09/2020 20:00

Grr, in mind be = in my area

AnnieOH1 · 23/09/2020 20:01

It's false data though. Last week I attempted to help 2 local families obtain tests. We are in a town in North East Derbyshire. The closest available test site was Bolton. We were also offered Warrington and even Aberdeen! On day 5 when home tests can't be done we were finally offered a home test. I was trying, along with the two other families throughout the week at different times.

LiveintheNow · 23/09/2020 20:04
