Going into the office

So now that our government has asked office workers to wfh our line manager has said he will still be going in as he works better in the office BUT won't expect us to go in...but if we want to we can as he feels we work better in the office. Kind of an underhanded if you don't come to office you'll be the first to be made redundant!

He's a total control freak. The only person who made people come back into the office as soon as offices opened again (the rest of the office stayed home) - I get it - team atmosphere is good - but it's just better that we work from home. Reducing the spread. People who are unable to work from home I know that's different but we 100% can wfh.

I'll be going in one day a week until my employer tells me to do something different.

SalterWatcher · 22/09/2020 17:03

I should explain he 'made' our team come in...he plays games - I can't describe him really but he makes you feel bad if you don't do what he tries to make it sound like you have a choice!

I think we will be one day a week as a compromise. Boss would prefer more and I think some tram members are going to be annoyed by it and caught between job and doing the right thing by following guidelines. I have a suspicion that more and more businesses will put pressure on people to be in.

Me and my PA are going in every day but we have our own offices and only ones in the building. We don't have visitors to the offices and so we won't need to wear masks unless we stand next to each other at the photocopier which is very rare.

OP just ignore him and don’t go in. You are following government advice and getting your work done so if he tries to get rid of you (he won’t in all probability) sue him for unfair dismissal.

It's very hard because of course I do think I would love to be in the office not just with him though on his own but with the others.

I think for everyone's safety we shouldn't also we only sit 1m apart and don't wear masks. As no one else has really come in (the CEO does once a week but he goes into his office then never comes out) it's just bizarre - the remainder of the 70 staff have been allowed to stay home and actually are working very effectively looking at the updates from their managers!

Also sorry I should say I love the office when there isn't a pandemic!

We've been wfh if we want. We work in a small office 1m apart.

One team member prefers to come in due to her personal circumstances. That's her call, bwcause she has a house full and hates wfh, but she's forever asking when the rest of us are coming in, even though the boss has said we can wfh.

Luckily this colleague is not the boss!

No change in guidance from my office - still have to go in. It's been just me and the boss for the last 2 weeks. Its deadly, I hate it. All the worst things about working in the office with none of the benefits. I see less of the team when I'm in as it's awkward to do teams in the office. Boss goes off and finds an empty office if she needs to do teams. I hate her looking at me 24/7. For the first week she didn't take lunch so I didn't either. Today I just got up and said I was going for lunch though. I just sat outside but it was a good mental break.
