Currently on the exempt list.
We're looking at 4 nights this weekend

My main worries are:
Currently at 27 per 100,000
Changing rules in wales whilst we're away
Getting ill whilst there and not being able to get home to kids (who will be safe at their dads)

On the other hand I'm desperate for some sun.
Have worked throughout the pandemic (ITU and community nursing)

"Global pandemic " is not a tautology. The def of a pandemic is a disease outbreak that is either global or covers a wide area and crosses national boundaries. So when Ebola broke out in West Africa a few years ago it was a pandemic but not a global pandemic.

Indeed.

I'm presuming the intent of the posters objecting to the word 'global' is to minimise the severity of this pandemic, and to justify their desire to travel. People are free to do what they like (within the law) but shouldn't act so shocked that others hold a different view on international travel given our current situation.

wowfudge · 22/09/2020 12:12

You presume incorrectly @Sakura7. My understanding of the word pandemic is down to having studied classics. I'm not seeking to downplay anything. I always think 'electrocution' means killing by electric shock, but it also means injury by electric shock according to dictionary definitions.

wizzbangfizz · 22/09/2020 12:15

I went last month, didn't have to isolate and it was an amazing holiday. Agree ignore the mumsnet police and follow the rules and enjoy your holiday.

Saranvenya · 22/09/2020 12:30

We’re supposed to be off to Corfu on Friday and we will go if we can.
We’re also in Wales and just, just outside the lockdown areas! So anything can happen between now and then.
So yes I would go OP if given the opportunity.

showmethegin · 22/09/2020 12:32

@Sakura7 you presume incorrectly. I object to everyone saying GLOBAL PANDEMIC all the time because are all aware that there is a pandemic and what that means.

I didn't and don't need to justify travel to anyone. I wanted to go, it's legal to go, and I self isolated voluntarily for two weeks before I flew and am following the imposed self quarantine now having returned.

It's more dangerous to holiday in a country like ours with climbing rates and a totally incompetent government than it is to fly to somewhere like Greece where the risks are very low.

Being dramatic and shouting GLOBAL pandemic to anyone that doesn't want to sit at home talking to people through the letterbox doesn't help. We need to be realistic, follow guidelines and use common sense. This virus is likely to be with us for a very long time, we can't just shut down forever.

Sakura7 · 22/09/2020 12:47

@wowfudge Fair enough

@showmethegin I'm not shouting and I'm not the one being dramatic. 'Global pandemic' is a fairly standard term used in relation to covid. No need to jump down someone's throat over it.

I'm well aware that everyone is free to make their own decisions and I said as much in my post. But it's obvious that many people have a different opinion to you on international travel and their views are perfectly valid in this context. OP asked for opinions and got them, there's no need to attack people over it.

Stellaris22 · 22/09/2020 12:51

Why?

Honestly, what part of global pandemic is so difficult to grasp. This is why borders will get closed because of pointless holidays and flying.

I am being harsh which I hate, but seriously, just don't do it.

LH1987 · 22/09/2020 12:52

I'd go, if you are able to self isolate on return.

MozzchopsThirty · 22/09/2020 12:59

But I don't need to self isolate under current guidelines

@Saranvenya I hope you get to go, keeping everything crossed
We are also about the only county in wales allowed to move

Absolutely not!

Tomatoesneedtoripen · 22/09/2020 13:32

And if you have to quarantine it will be your annual leave, have you got plenty?

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 22/09/2020 13:37

Absolutely agree @showmethegin (you sound like my kind of person btw)

Here's a newsflash for some of you:-

Thousands of people have been abroad this summer and it was totally and 100% legal
The vast majority of them got home with no problems
The vast majority of them did not get Covid
For those who had issues having to come home early/self isolate, most of them went in the full knowledge that this was a possibility and made their own assessment of whether they still wanted to travel

I am included in those categories above (and I'm planning on travelling again in a couple of weeks, if I'm able to).

Too many people on MN are whinging about the rule of 6/mask wearing/ etc etc and yet those same people are shouting down those who choose to travel who are LEGALLY ALLOWED TO DO SO!

showmethegin · 22/09/2020 13:40

@chocolatesaltyballs22 here here!

We cannot completely crash every industry when it is not necessary. Of course everyone has the right to not travel if they don't wish to but to imply it is reckless is bizarre in the extreme.

Life is about assessing risk.
