Currently on the exempt list.
We're looking at 4 nights this weekend

My main worries are:
Currently at 27 per 100,000
Changing rules in wales whilst we're away
Getting ill whilst there and not being able to get home to kids (who will be safe at their dads)

On the other hand I'm desperate for some sun.
Have worked throughout the pandemic (ITU and community nursing)

@chocolatesaltyballs22

God forbid the OP should have two holidays Hmm
Well no, she can do as she likes, but it’s hardly the picture painted in the OP of someone desperate for a break who’s been working non-stop since March is it? There was no need to exaggerate the scenario in order to sway answers on a forum.

There’s no limit on how many holidays a person can have and there’s no need to try and elicit an emotional response from people.

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 22/09/2020 09:41

OP have your holiday and ignore the MN holiday police.

Most people on here refuse to follow actual government laws, so I'm damned if I'm taking any notice on stuff that's actually 'allowed.'

blackice · 22/09/2020 09:42

No I wouldn't

Stirmecrazy · 22/09/2020 09:43

I’m in Rhodes now and it is gorgeous weather a beautiful 30 degrees . Feels safe in our hotel and surrounding area . But we booked with TUI so have Covid cover and we have already had to change our holiday as were originally going to Portugal. I personally wouldn’t travel independently at the moment as it is too risky and things are changing day to day but through a travel company like TUI with a bit of flexibility on days and location absolutely

Mouseketeer2015 · 22/09/2020 09:44

We're all desperate to get back to normal lives, there are those who are desperate to be properly reunited with their wider families, there are those who haven't been living anything like a normal life because they were told to shield and have continued to be extremely cautious. You're desperate some sun and are wanting to travel? I think there's a huge difference between your desperation and thosing making personal sacrifices to help slow the spread of the virus. It's down to you what you do, only you can understand the risk involved to you and others (and working in the NHS you should have a very clear idea). Go if you want to but don't get other people to validate your decision.

Porcupineinwaiting · 22/09/2020 09:46

I think there are safer destinations. Have you thoughts about some of the Spanish Islands? Maidera was doing ok last time I looked.

Moondust001 · 22/09/2020 09:53

You're missing the key point here, we are in the middle of a global pandemic.

Really? Jeez, when did that happen?

OP, I have a second home in Greece. I got back a week and a half ago after two weeks there. The figures for most of Greece are significantly lower than here, and for parts of it almost non-existent (where my house is, they don't think there's been any cases at all). If you have no vulnerabilities then there is an insignificant risk to you anywhere, Greece or the UK. If I didn't have to come back for work, I know which I'd be picking to be in. I don't know which is scarier - the hysteria being generated by the virus, or the excuse it gives to xenophobics who think that anywhere outside the UK is just too damned dangerous to be.

WhiteChocTwix · 22/09/2020 09:57

Agree with @Porcupineinwaiting Madiera rates were looking ok last time we looked as well.

OP we've been home from Greece for over two weeks now and it was fabulous. We did our own risk assessment and decided it was feasible to go even if we had to quarantine on return, if flights from the islands had been stopped we'd have got a ferry to Athens then BA flight home from there (we were on a redemption like you) etc. If you feel it's feasible to go I'd take the chance to get some sun while you can. It's going to be a bloody long winter.

WhiteChocTwix · 22/09/2020 09:59

Well said @Moondust001 👍

showmethegin · 22/09/2020 10:02

We got back from Greece late on Saturday after 10 days. We need to self isolate which we knew before buying and we were able to with our employment situation. We had a wonderful time and felt very safe (there have been no cases in over a week on the island where we were). It was incredibly quiet though but I was happy to see our Greek friends and help to contribute in our small way to their businesses; I have been going to the island for 30 years and worry for them over winter.

I would be worried at this point though with the way English cases are going that the Greek gov would put a stop to it.

All these people saying going abroad is mad are deluded; you are far safer going somewhere with negligible cases then going from a city like Birmingham down the Cornwall. And for all the people saying GLOBAL PANDEMIC. Every pandemic is global, that's the definition.

showmethegin · 22/09/2020 10:02

*knew before going

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 22/09/2020 10:11

And for all the people saying GLOBAL PANDEMIC. Every pandemic is global, that's the definition.

Absolutely. No need for the 'global' peeps.

AriettyHomily · 22/09/2020 10:12

For four nights. no I wouldnt.

Weallfloatdownhere · 22/09/2020 10:12

Completely agree. Winds me up every time I see it 😆
wowfudge · 22/09/2020 10:16

Indeed - tautology.

Were due to go away and frankly some sun and a different four walls are all we want. Very many places are safer than the UK from a Covid perspective. If you're going on a package the tour operator will have to get you back home should things change whilst you're away.

showmethegin · 22/09/2020 10:17

@Moondust001 👍🏼👏🏼

Porcupineinwaiting · 22/09/2020 10:41

"Global pandemic " is not a tautology. The def of a pandemic is a disease outbreak that is either global or covers a wide area and crosses national boundaries. So when Ebola broke out in West Africa a few years ago it was a pandemic but not a global pandemic.

As you were.

WatershipDown7 · 22/09/2020 10:47

I would go if I were you, by wait to see what Boris has to say first.

KeepOnMovingForwards · 22/09/2020 11:00

I wouldn't go anywhere at the moment, no.

MozzchopsThirty · 22/09/2020 11:07

Sorry where did I say I was a poor harassed healthcare worker?

I was just saying that I worked as normal for the last 6 months unlike a lot of my furloughed friends who mostly sat in their gardens.

Normally we'd have had a few holidays by now

I think we'll wait and see what boris and mark drakeford say today and book tonight if nothing much changes

Thank you for the helpful posts regarding your recent travel

Cornettoninja · 22/09/2020 11:21

Why mention your job at all? Lots of people have worked throughout, there was no need to bring it up at all was there?

MozzchopsThirty · 22/09/2020 11:27

Jeez so sorry Confused

MozzchopsThirty · 22/09/2020 11:32

What a treat you are @Cornettoninja

OP posts:
rookiemere · 22/09/2020 11:33

OP we had a friends trip booked to Poland. Ironically as it turned out, some of our party decided that it was too risky to travel there and we'd booked to go to Newcastle instead, leading to another hasty last minute change.

To be honest I've pretty much given up on any further travel this year either in UK or abroad as it's all so uncertain. In your circumstances I'd be worried about Sudden restrictions on either side as insurance unlikely to cover you for much these days.

ODFOx · 22/09/2020 11:34

If you can cope with quarantine on your return then go: the rules are likely to keep changing over the next couple of weeks and there's a good chance you'll get caught in a self isolation on the way back: up to you if you can cope with that or not.
My brother's on Rhodes and having a lovely relaxed time. I wouldn't have dared get on a plane at the moment. Your risk aversion isn't the same as others so do what's right for youSmile.
