Does anyone know what time? Interested to hear what they're going to say.

@mac12

Clear summary of where we are & where we are heading by October with epidemic doubling every 7 days. Sobering, nothing new but good to keep people Up to date. V surprised they didn’t address aerosol transmission like the CDC as it’s clear gap in U.K. policy
Or symptomatic spread
halcyondays · 21/09/2020 11:25

“This is a map of England, similar maps exist for the rest of the UK.” Show us them then!

starfish4 · 21/09/2020 11:25

We'll that was pretty sobering.

Smallereveryday · 21/09/2020 11:25

@Seriouslymole

"If, if, if" is all I'm getting from this. "This might happen, that might happen."

What's the point?

No he didn't. Listen again he said IF we don't do something this WILL happen..
roguecat · 21/09/2020 11:26

its shit, shit and shit,

but at least they are clear and upfront, unlike BorisHmm

Namechangeme87 · 21/09/2020 11:26

No i think that was fairly concise and better than Boris and his bumbling

Some actually science n numbers

CrunchyCarrot · 21/09/2020 11:26

I made a rough transcript of what was said, in new thread here:

HeronLanyon · 21/09/2020 11:27

My take away -
Good to just see and hear the science.
It’s serious.
Now wait for boris to impose further restrictions necessitated by it.
First time I haven’t felt angry and as though Those speaking are bending rules and profiting and largely expect etc. Only other time was when the ‘head nurse’ (that wasn’t her title) spoke and she was then silenced for the next press briefing I seem to remember.

HeronLanyon · 21/09/2020 11:27

Exempt not expect

ChavvySexPond · 21/09/2020 11:28

@starfish4

We'll that was pretty sobering.
Very little has changed since March.

We were al merrily spreading it around in January and February. We just didn't know because they weren't testing anyone who hadn't been to Chine or had close contact with someone from China.

All the way along a failure to test appropriately has crippled the UK's response and led to infections, deaths and economic carnage.

Enoughnowstop · 21/09/2020 11:28

Well that was the warm up act. When does Boris slap the restrictions on?

Yes, I think it’s been set up very clearly for ‘measures’. Let’s see what happens this evening.

ineedaholidaynow · 21/09/2020 11:30

Is Boris meant to be speaking tomorrow?

SockYarn · 21/09/2020 11:31
@SockYarn maybe some people need to be told that
At 11am on a Monday morning when everyone's at work, college or school?

She was banned because she would not toe the line with that unelected Cummings and his trip to test his eyes.

BarefootHippieChick · 21/09/2020 11:31

I thought it was very clear and concise, tbh I stopped watching any kind of briefings months ago. Most interesting for me was the pointing out of walking a very thin line between having to close everything again and the risk to the economy and mental health, or keeping things open and possibly thousands dying or ending up with serious long term health issues. I think sometimes the general public forget just how hard it is for the people in charge to make these decisions, knowing they're going to be lambasted whatever they do. (And believe me, I'm no fan of politicians or the PM but I really wouldn't want to be in their shoes.)

Roussette · 21/09/2020 11:32

I hope Boris stays away. He just muddys the waters with his flip flopping, not saying what he means, bluster and soundbites.

Thank you!

ineedaholidaynow · 21/09/2020 11:33

@SockYarn I am sure it will be talked about all day today, people will be able to catch up on it at some point

Roussette · 21/09/2020 11:33

Totally agree

christinarossetti19 · 21/09/2020 11:34

Yes, that was clear and as other say, refreshing to be addressed as adults rather than being emotionally manipulated/lied to by Johnson/Hancock etc.

Very scary. Feel very torn. Children and adults did really need to get back to school/college/university/workplaces, but that's what's increasing the rate of transmission.

I can keep my social contacts to an absolute minimum as wfh, but I have two children in different schools who need to be out there in the world having some sort of normality.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 21/09/2020 11:36

So, basically everything hinges on a vaccine. They’ve confirmed that lockdowns don’t eradicate the virus and only kick the problem further down the line.

Washimal · 21/09/2020 11:38

CrunchyCarrot that's so helpful, thank you!

I agree they are prepping us for tougher restrictions being put into place. But I actually think this is a sensible (uncharacteristically so, from this government!) way to do that. It makes sense to let the scientists present the evidence to the public and give them some time to process it all before those in power communicate what they've decided they're going to do about it.

Illdealwithitinaminute · 21/09/2020 11:39

The thing about limiting social contacts really annoyed me. Literally two weeks ago, Boris and co were all over the media with tonnes of articles about getting back to offices, using public transport. Actually, the population remembered why they didn't want to use public transport and preferred not to go to the office (or at least didn't want to risk it at this point) but were over-ridden and made to feel guilty for not using these facilities.

It is also totally ridiculous to call a curfew 10pm closing of pubs and restaurants. They used to close at 11pm in the good old days anyway! That's hardly a huge limit. I think if pubs and clubs had been closed this weekend when the students went back it would have been less fun for them but would have sat on rates...

It just seems like the gov't is sending out two contradictory messages: stay home, limit social contact, it's all on you, and go out, spend money, use public transport and your office, it's all on you. You'll notice in every message it's all on you.

The80sweregreat · 21/09/2020 11:40

Alec, anymore restrictions will be to protect the NHS again. Which makes it hard if people won't do it or all just think it's one big conspiracy as they did it all properly last time and don't think they should again.

The NHS are up against it now ( as they every winter ) and they must also be praying for a vaccine.
