Chris Whitty to hold briefing tomorrow

molifly14 · 20/09/2020 22:09

According to sky news, Chris Witty is to hold a briefing tomorrow and will not be joined by any members of the cabinet or Boris Johnson and won't take questions. He will apparently discuss different scenarios.

Does that sound odd to anyone else and does this maybe mean no further restrictions this week, let's just try and scare us all into being good instead?

But people get closer to each other at home. Bearing in mind you are meant to SD in pubs, cafes etc if you are meeting up with people from other households. I think pubs etc
need to be stricter with SD. Maybe everyone will need to bring ID, if rules aren’t followed then they close.

Maybe new rules will be no mixing of households anywhere

Ranunculi · 21/09/2020 00:25

The government need to explain why one is OK and not the other
There is literally no logical explanation for this. My parents and I can book two neighbouring tables in a restaurant but we can’t sit the same distance apart in their house? It’s ludicrous.

QueenOllie · 21/09/2020 00:30

I can't see the people who aren't listening suddenly starting listening just because there's been an announcement
You only have to look at the comments section of any FB post

@TheMurk

They’ve been telegraphing another full lockdown for over a week now.

This will be the “scientific” basis for it.

They’re wheeling him out as the harmless geek who is just telling us the facts.

It will be followed by solemn Boris about 8pm tomorrow night telling us it’s another lockdown.

That’s if wee Nicky doesn’t usurp him first.

Woah are you Dominic Cummins?

I do think you're right though with everything you've said. Unfortunately.

What are the chances most people will stay precisely that distance apart when they’re in a private home? It just doesn’t work. People relax, they get close, boundaries get eroded.

It’s because people are less likely to SD in a house I guess
QueenOllie · 21/09/2020 00:32

@Ranunculi I think (I might be wrong!)

Pub
Track and trace
Sitting apart
Ventilation (maybe?!)
Limited time usually

Home
Sharing cutlery/crockery
Touching surfaces
Hugging
Sitting closer (on a sofa)
Spending longer together

ineedaholidaynow · 21/09/2020 00:33

But would you @Ranunculi? Or maybe you would but how many people on various threads have been saying they have been having family round etc and hugging. Close contact causes the virus rates to rise.

Interestingly people say they don’t like being treated like toddlers yet many people don’t follow the rules. In Sweden there haven’t been strict rules but people seem to be able to SD, WFH and over 70s avoid meeting family indoors. They don’t appear to need to be told rules they just apply them. Maybe they are more anti-social so it suits them. They are meant to have a high rate of single households so maybe they are anti-social!

Justaboy · 21/09/2020 00:45

If there's no end in sight a lot of people are now just thinking fuck it. If he can't give some kind of a timeline of when we'll get back to proper normal, there's no hope is there so really what's the point in carrying on like this.

Well the Virus is still there replicating as mich as it can it has nowe gone away. People are waay too close to each other thats why its spreading and the more it spreds the more higher numbers will be infected.

This is not rocket science its basic biology and epidemiology nothing else nothing to do with 5G and all that crap. Either we keep people apart or just let it spread. If you could keep every person in the Y UK away from every otgher for a fortnight it'd disapper. You can't do that so all you can do is to keep them apart as best you can and that isnt working that well cos the bloody public won't do it so we'll go thru a lockdown again how severe is most anyones guess apart from Boris!

What we DO NEED is a Viable Vaccine but that isnt avaiable as yet we'll have to wait it needs through testing tostop the the Virus p spreading i.e. give immunity BUT whats more important is it dosent cause any nasty long term side effecs thats the real problem.

Till then it needs effective managing, thats whats not happening.

A lot of people are not socially distancing with family and friends in the home though, they often aren't staying the equivalent of two meters away from each other. Pubs and restaurants should be and I'm assuming that's where some of the logic lies.

I'm in the northeast and I've several extended family and friends of friends posting photos of them all mixing households over the weekend, the family Sunday lunch, the birthday party or their kids play dates with no social distancing happening. I've also seen a few families in local Facebook page say they just meet in pubs outside local lockdown so they don't have to follow guidelines.

redlockscelt · 21/09/2020 01:00

@molifly14

My thinking is that surely any further restrictions wouldn't be announced by anybody other than Boris?
He has probably gone on holiday again.
redlockscelt · 21/09/2020 01:01

@Piggypower

But the people who are breaking the rules won’t watch or listen to Whitty 🤷🏼‍♀️
They probably wouldn't understand what he said if they didHmm
Carrotcakeforbreakfast · 21/09/2020 01:26

Some of the attitudes on here are appalling and exactly why the numbers are going up.
I've just finished a shift that was meant to finish at 8pm tonight.
My trust are seeing the numbers rise at an alarming rate. I had to stay as we had to open up another CT scanner to deal with the 'hot patients' we already have 1 hot scanner too.
Those are saying " only 21 deaths, but the deaths aren't rising" need to go back to March and look at the figures then. Before it exploded.

Yes people die of other things
I see it daily
Cancer, trauma, suicide but you cannot catch these things from others. It is a pathetic, juvenile comparison.
If we let covid go unchecked and only deal with the cancers etc covid will within weeks outnumber those deaths my thousands and thousands.

I am honestly drained to begin this battle again and reading some of the comments on here make me not want to fucking bother.

I do think a lot of people take this seriously despite the comments of a few on here. I fully understand why the NHS feel betrayed. Teachers now as well. I personally do appreciate your efforts, and I take every precaution so I won't need your services.
CrunchyCarrot · 21/09/2020 05:34

Catching up with this news. I think it means Whitty and Valance will be trotted out to explain data, graphs and trends and impress on the public that things are about to get a lot worse (especially if people don't comply with restrictions). Perhaps the Cabinet have decided to try the scientists first hoping that the public will take them more seriously, after all it's becoming obvious there's unrest and many people aren't complying as they are (depending on your opinion) rightly or wrongly fed up with the way things are.

They have a higher profile than Boris and so he's been left out for this briefing - but then I fully expect him to make an appearance very soon, in order to announce more restrictions - maybe he'll have Sunak with him with some economic measures to sweeten any further lockdown.

It's quite possible that if enough people get it in their heads not to comply, there's no way they can be stopped, and we can see the numbers of people willing to ignore any advice is growing daily. Unfortunately this govt isn't being taken seriously and have made serious errors, the worst being the messed up testing system, if you can even call it a system.

I don't think whatever Whitty and Valance say today will be enough to stem the rising tide of discontent.

stoptheworldiwant2getoff · 21/09/2020 05:56

@carrotcaleforbreakfast I hope everyone reads your post, I can't believe how many are openly ignoring all guidance because they simply do not care about others! It makes me so sad. Thanks for what you are doing!

WhentheDealGoesDown1 · 21/09/2020 06:12

I imagine it is to get the science side out there without Boris muddying the waters and the press asking inane questions and further muddying the waters

KatherineJaneway · 21/09/2020 06:26

@molifly14

11am seems such a daft time when most people are back at work, like the government told us to do. Consider this our pre naughty step warning.
It is likely a calculated move to try and get some people to take Covid seriously. No politicians, just a scientist. A veiled threat before a mini lockdown.
EmmaWithTheGreatHair · 21/09/2020 06:31

@Carrotcakeforbreakfast I wish someone like you could be at this press conference today, someone ‘real’, then maybe people would listen!

I also wish they’d get Jonathan Van Tam back on, loved his no nonsense approach.

Leafbeans · 21/09/2020 06:33

There is literally no logical explanation for this. My parents and I can book two neighbouring tables in a restaurant but we can’t sit the same distance apart in their house? It’s ludicrous.

The logic I suppose is that realistically it's unlikely people remain at least 1m apart in other people's homes at all times, or clean surfaces several times a day.

Underhisi · 21/09/2020 06:34

After the Cummings incident large numbers of people will not listen to Boris 'do as I say but not as I do'. The scientists have the only hope of getting people to listen and appealing to the population's good will.

Boris often confuses everyone with what he says anyway so better not having him there.

keziahthecat · 21/09/2020 06:35

They seem so scared. I think there is more going on behind the scenes than we know. Hopefully that will be revealed to us today.

MarshaBradyo · 21/09/2020 06:45

Carrotcake people won’t find it easy but majority will follow what they say. But what you do is really appreciated. Reading posts from NHS workers do remind me why, when it feels a bit bleak.

Ghouliet · 21/09/2020 07:01

I watched Chris Whitty speak at a public Select committee in March where he said that it would be very difficult to have public support for a second lockdown so the first lockdown needs to be done at the right time.

At the time of the select committee he thought we would have 3 weeks until we needed to lockdown but in actual fact the cases rose so quickly we had less than one.

I suspect he’ll be outlining the second national lockdown strategy, why we need it and for how long. The message needs to be clear so the media, and those to watch it, send out the same simple message rather than the mismanaged communications we’ve been getting recently. I hope this will be across all U.K. too so that all the countries show unity as unity is something we’re struggling with at the moment.

ChasingRainbows19 · 21/09/2020 07:03

I don’t understand why it’s so hard for people to understand that mixing is households is where it spreads.

I know loads of people via social media that are doing so ignoring rules of six/no one in homes etc and we are in a lockdown area. ( my close friends have same views as me thankfully)

I can go to a restaurant yes but I’m well spaced from others and only there for maybe two hours. If had someone here at my house it can be for longer, in a smaller space and people are comfortable and naturally distance less.

@Carrotcakeforbreakfast I’m an NHS worker too. Cases in hospital are rising slowly but definitely and the thought of this in winter pressures which we struggle with makes me just not to want to go to work again. The attitudes of people denying and minimising don’t help.
