Will I get a refund?

Name changed for this because I feel like I may get some abuse.
I have a hotel booked for me and my OH this coming Saturday.
If things go the way I’m thinking, with this announcement on Tuesday (circuit break lockdown) we may not be able to go.
I know it’s a trivial thing in the scheme of things but it was our anniversary and we don’t have a lot of disposable income at the moment.

Just wondering if getting a deposit back will be possible or not.

They are more likely to offer you a new date than refund.

rosie1959 · 20/09/2020 10:37

As far as I have read the proposed circuit breaker is to stop families meeting in their own homes
As you are not meeting anyone and business is unlikely to be shut down then why would you need to cancel

IcedPurple · 20/09/2020 10:39

You'd have to check the terms and conditions of your booking. Some hotels allow free cancellation for any reason, some don't. Not much point asking people on MN about it.

TheSeedsOfADream · 20/09/2020 10:40

It will depend I think on your T&C's at the time of booking.
An awful lot of tourist industry places have inserted a "no refund even if the govt says not to travel" clause.
Flowers hope you get to go. People need a break.

BaildonBelle · 20/09/2020 10:41

You shouldn't feel bad about planning a weekend away. I hope you're able to go and have a lovely time.

However, I think you'll most likely be offered the chance to postpone your booking. Cross that bridge when you come to it.

yeOldeTrout · 20/09/2020 10:43

Agree Ask them now what their refund or other relevant policy is.

ceeveebee · 20/09/2020 10:44

I don’t think the measures will require hotels to close - I think it will be banning mixing of households and possibly closing/curtailing pubs. If the hotel is forced to closed i am sure they would refund or postpone.

Mindymomo · 20/09/2020 10:46

I think they will cancel foreign holidays before uk breaks.

Namechange2306 · 20/09/2020 11:07

Thanks everyone. I hope you’re right.
I’m more concerned there will be travel restrictions.
I think if hotels stay open we’ll be ok as we’re going in our own household.

Even in actual lockdown back in April you could still take trains and travel wherever you wanted really - I flew to Ireland twice.
I’ve a hotel booked last week of September - doubt it wIll close So plan on still going.

If by 'they' you mean the government, then no they won't. Even at the height of lockdown you could still travel - provided the other country would let you in and you could find a flight going there. The govt can issue advice against non-essential travel, which would invalidate any travel insurance, but, short of closing the borders, they can't just 'cancel' foreign holidays.

Yep, given some people are still travelling between the UK and elsewhere on business and to see family etc as you say "cancelling foreign holidays" could only be achieved by closing the borders.

Are we ready for the Australian solution?

RMarieClaire · 20/09/2020 12:29

We're off on holiday next week to Cornwall. I don't think it will be cancelled. The government can't afford many more businesses to be forced to close

TheGreatWave · 20/09/2020 12:52

What a state we have got to where a poster is fearful of abuse because they have booked a night in a hotel.

OP I hope you get to go and have a lovely time. xxx

TheGreatWave · 20/09/2020 12:53

What's with the xxx? Blush
