Hi all,

Want to make sure I don’t miss out on anything so can you please share what are the things you need to do before lockdown (in the likely case it happens?)

My short list so far is:

  • teach grandad how to use video calling
  • return books to library and get new ones out
  • take stuff to charity shop before they close
  • maybe go to the hair salon and take the kids to barbers
  • go to primark and Poundland for bits and bobs
  • do all pending house maintenance
  • final trip to Ikea

This thread isn’t encouraging people To panic shop, it’s reminded me to get the boys booked in for their flu jab, and boiler serviced. Neither of which is panic buying, as I doubt they give each kid more than one nasal spray 🙄

@weepingwillow22

Yes only pubs, restaurants and leisure rumoured to close.
do you think leisure includes gyms? Mine has only just reopened.
weepingwillow22 · 20/09/2020 06:19

@Emmagrundyforpm. No idea, I don't think government even knows yet. They just seem to be making it up as they go along.

I am getting my eyebrows waxed next week. I live in fear Boris will ban it before I get to go.

year5teacher · 20/09/2020 06:26

I don’t have anything on my to do list. I’ll just carry on as normal and do a weekly shop. I don’t think it’ll be so hard to get stuff this time. I’m out of the house for 12 hours every day on public transport and then in work, and will be regardless of what happens, so I don’t have time to prepare anyway!!

I thought the panic buying myth had been well and truly busted? The shortages last time were caused by people buying a bit extra due to changes in circumstance (needing to buy lunch stuff in Tesco rather than sandwiches near the office) and buying small amounts extra in case of periods of isolation.

All sensible and necessary behaviour. The problem was that the whole country was doing the same so it took a while for the supply chains to adjust.

Keeping a stock of non perishables is always a sensible thing to do.

SaltyAndFresh · 20/09/2020 08:56

It sounds like teachers will be forced to keep calm and carry on without the hero worship, so I make no apology about having booked shopping slots for the next four weeks. I'll be popping out to buy things I forgot this week, like sugar for baking, passata and cereal.

With hard Brexit looming it seems a good idea to have plenty of non-perishables in the cupboards because I don't fancy paying inflated prices for the same stuff in a few weeks' time. Doesn't have to mean panic buying at all.

@TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross my dentist is operating pretty normally I think although my visits have come about because I had a crumbling tooth in lockdown. It’s spiralled & is now infected & I need root canal. They are limiting the time they are doing appointments for so my treatment has to be done over more than one session. They’ve been really accommodating seeing me since opening.

@amieejust Sorry DC woke up. Do you feel like you could speak to your GP about how you’re feeling? Or maybe the Samaritans? It’s so lonely when you’re feeling like that, it might help to get some stuff off your chest even.

GarlicSoup · 20/09/2020 09:55

@Cupcakegirl13

Threads like this annoy me all of the things people talk about buying are freely available through the hardest of lockdowns . This just stokes the panic please stop.
No they’re not.
SuzieCarmichael · 20/09/2020 10:09

The pantry is fairly well stocked and I’ve booked a supermarket delivery slot for couple of weeks’ time so we should be well fed.

Ordered the paint to do all the woodwork in the house - skirting boards, bathroom floor etc - if we do get locked down, that will be my project to keep myself occupied.

Downloaded and made a start on Couch25k app - to give me a push to get out and exercise.

Haven’t done anything about Christmas presents or stamps though - hmm. Maybe I should see if the local card shop has got the usual charity boxes of Christmas cards in already.

I’ve given up on ever getting my eyebrows threaded again 😭 fortunately they’re pretty thin and pathetic so the only person who will notice their unkempt state is me.

Ffs all the people buying just a little extra. You are the problem! We have a just in time system in UK. If everyone buys just a little extra we run out. It's not the idiots with hundreds of loo rolls. It's you. Just fucking stop now. Then there won't be an issue.

mum2jakie · 20/09/2020 14:47

I've got some big household jobs to book in although all the tradesmen I contact are fully booked for the rest of the year!

Need sort out the garden and house desperately. Neither of us were furloughed and with the kids off school for months, the house is still in a shit state!

I am trying to spend as much time outside in the sunshine while I can. Topping up vitamin D levels is as good an excuse as any!

You do realise that saying that won’t make people stop? Either here or in the rest of the country away from Mumsnet. People naturally panic buy in a crisis as they are protecting their own. They won’t stop just because some random tells them to Hmm. If you didn’t know already, I’d have thought that this pandemic would have taught you how fundamentally selfish humans are. So sadly, your virtue signalling about panic buying won’t wipe your arse when you can’t get toilet roll.

@BornOnThe4thJuly don't want to bother my GP and Samaritans are always busy, no surprise there really.

Thanks for your support though Smile
