Hi all,

Want to make sure I don’t miss out on anything so can you please share what are the things you need to do before lockdown (in the likely case it happens?)

My short list so far is:

  • teach grandad how to use video calling
  • return books to library and get new ones out
  • take stuff to charity shop before they close
  • maybe go to the hair salon and take the kids to barbers
  • go to primark and Poundland for bits and bobs
  • do all pending house maintenance
  • final trip to Ikea

Stock up on blond root spray as it was sold out everywhere before.

Get DDs braces off.
Get all our eyes checked.
Dentists for all

Have already got extra printer ink and paper in
Started Christmas shopping
Got plenty of loo roll Grin

DressingGownofDoom · 19/09/2020 21:18

I'm just going to spend some extra time with family this time round instead of running round looking for hand sanitizer for work and buying supernoodles and tins of beans.

Cupcakegirl13 · 19/09/2020 21:29

Threads like this annoy me all of the things people talk about buying are freely available through the hardest of lockdowns . This just stokes the panic please stop.

MrsNotNice · 19/09/2020 21:34

Heatherjayne1972 oooh thats really good to know!

For those who are annoyed by the thread, why click on it? Clearly you have not read the content of the OP. This isn’t about panic “buying”. This is about preparing for lockdown in all other conveniences of life. Take your panicky anger elsewhere pls !

Cupcake No things in my area (Manchester) were not freely available at all and still are hard to get hold of.

Thehogfatherstolemycurry · 19/09/2020 22:04

Get Flu jab, ut would have that anyway.
Buy paint for the hall and landing, it's due for doing.
Get kids vitamins

StrangeAddiction · 19/09/2020 22:11

Anyone on pre-payment gas/electric meters maybe switch to smart meters so that you don't need to go out to top up especially if the weather is bad just top up o line. So much easier!

For anyone who needs to use public transport to go shopping or non drivers who walk, try buying bulkier/heavier items online to be delivered by amazon with their subscribe and save option (you can choose the frequency of the automatic delivery) We've done this with dishwasher tablets, big boxes of soap powder and softener, cat food etc.

GetRid · 19/09/2020 22:28

I've bought vitamin D supplies for me and the dcs to last the winter

Also a toasted sandwich maker to liven up lunchtimes if we're stuck at home Grin

WhiteChocTwix · 19/09/2020 22:29

I did a large wine order today. That’s about it

@Piggypower 👍good call. Everyone round my way panic brought all the white wine last time. 🙄

amieejust · 19/09/2020 22:31

Write my goodbye letters as I won't mentally or emotionally survive another national lockdown, especially if it's longer than two weeks Sad 💔

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 19/09/2020 22:46

How come everyone's dentists are operating as normal? I'd love to be able to get a check up but ours are still emergencies only.

I couldn't believe some of the shelves were emptying in Tesco today. People really are crazy in the way they stock up. It's as if we're heading for the apocalypse rather than a few pubs and restaurants shutting for a while.

BornOnThe4thJuly · 19/09/2020 22:52

@amieejust So sorry that’s how you’re feeling. Is there anyone you can talk to in real life?

LouMumsnet · 19/09/2020 22:58

Sorry to hear that you're feeling so low at the moment, @amieejust - we hope you don't mind, but when posts like yours are flagged up to us we usually add a link to our Mental Health resources.

You can also go to the Samaritans website, or email them on [email protected].

Support from other Mumsnetters is great and we really hope you will be able to take some comfort from your fellow posters, but as other MNers will tell you, it's really a good idea to seek RL help and support as well.

Take care. Flowers

@BornOnThe4thJuly, no, not really.

Anyway sorry to have derailed the thread.

Torvean32 · 19/09/2020 23:50

There's no need to stock up, all that leads to is panic buying. And the ppl that suffer from that is the elderly who cant use internet alternatives.

MrsNotNice · 20/09/2020 01:20

amieejust

Not at all Ami, please talk to us Flowers

So maybe we can also get ideas of things to do to help us stay positive and feel less isolated in case of a lockdown?

Mine are:

1- reading an inspiring biography (Suggestions ?)
2- start new exercise challenge (running)
3- Learn a new language/skill (python)
4- Start a book club with friends to stay connected on zoom
5- painting ?

So for that I’m going to need a trip to the library. And need me some new running shoes.

To reiterate, this is not necessarily a stockpiling thread. But there will be services that aren’t easily available during lockdown and so just like any new phase in life it’s good to be prepared.

Walking every day, with at least 20 minutes in a park.
Dancing to at least one song on the radio every day.
Colouring books were a revelation - engrossing and satisying.

TheoriginalLEM · 20/09/2020 04:38

Well the pasta shelves in tesco were empty last night Hmm

daisychain01 · 20/09/2020 04:41

It's unlikely to be a lockdown for several months. Possibly 2 weeks around October half term, in addition to the 6 people rule.

People need to think calmly and realistically and not jump to ridiculous conclusions.

The best people can do is change their behaviour now, because we are in this for the long haul, so it's pointless just lurching from one "lockdown" to the next. It should be a general shift in mental attitude towards "how can we live with this virus over the long term, and make everyday living as pleasant as possible".

But I know that's not nearly as interesting as creating lists about everything that needs to be done in time for Armageddon. Believe me if we have to keep doing this for the next 2 years or so, people will get tired of counting and just shift their mindset.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 20/09/2020 05:27

The rumour is that Boris will.announce an immediate 2 week lockdown on Tuesday. So people who are hoping for haircuts, new school shoes etc don't have a lot of time.

I haven't been to a supermarket for months as I shop online and top up in our village shop. So i have no idea if there are shortages on the shelves but if people are panic buying then that is ridiculous. Surely people should have learned from last time.

We are currently on holiday for a week and I'm personally disappointed if lockdown happens as I was looking forward to some nice pub meals BUT of course i would much rather lockdown than pub if it saves lives.

Hyperfish101 · 20/09/2020 05:36

Good grief. Even if there is a national lockdown it’s likely to only be 2 weeks! And many shops will still be open. Calm down.

weepingwillow22 · 20/09/2020 05:44

Yes only pubs, restaurants and leisure rumoured to close.
