Testing is at a Phase III stage. There should be enough data to confirm efficacy and safety. I say fuck the normal red tape. This is a global catastrophe about to happen.

Ok. You and your family can go first . I'll wait for the next phase

I would have no problem with that. Thousands of people are taking it in the clinical trial already.

No thanks.

NewStart2020MyArse · 19/09/2020 17:00

Luckily there are thousands willing to participate in clinical trials so you can have your nice, safe medications for asthma, cancer, diabetes, heart disease, etc Hmm

Smellbellina · 19/09/2020 17:03

Hmm ok.

Char2015 · 19/09/2020 17:04

They did say data would be ready around this time so I would expect some updates by the end of the month, early October. I definitely think if the results are promising the Gov will want to try and get this vaccine pushed through as quickly as possible and start vaccinating. I've read that they have already started to train up more medical staff who don't normally give vaccines to be able to administer covid vaccines once they are ready.

knittingaddict · 19/09/2020 17:04

I said yes to the other thread, asking if I would have the vaccine.

It's a big fat NO to this one.

ErrolTheDragon · 19/09/2020 17:05

There should be enough data to confirm efficacy and safety.

Are you an expert in this field?

If not, then I'm going to stick to the assumption that there will be enough data to confirm safety when the trials have finished. They don't do them for shits and giggles, you know.Hmm

Aposterhasnoname · 19/09/2020 17:05

Frazzled13 · 19/09/2020 17:06

I’d participate in the trial, but no to rolling it out for everyone.
If there were any issues, that could damage people’s trust in vaccines for years (on top of whatever problems the vaccine itself had).

RepeatSwan · 19/09/2020 17:07

No, the sane thing to do would be to wait for proper processes to be completed.

I get that people are struggling but...

Frying pan to fire springs to mind.

rorosemary · 19/09/2020 17:07

Except that one of the things that the trial needs to find out is if this dosage, or one dosage, is enough. So it might not help to roll it out now if we don't know that yet.

I work in clinical trials. I would have expected an interim unblinded report for such a vital trial. Obviously, in a normal situation the trial completes before unblinding. These are not normal times.

Erm we have no data on efficiency so no that is really not a given (it’s probably reasonable safe for healthy adults under 60 which was priced by stage two but not necessary others)

I am afraid we have a long way to go yet!

x2boys · 19/09/2020 17:09

And if it all went wrong and people had all kinds of complications, from it can you imagine the uproar that would cause ?

Bickles · 19/09/2020 17:09

Dental foundation year graduates are being trained to give vaccinations- I saw it on the course list.
5 year degree and good with needles but don’t normally give vaccines. Good at cross infection and have the PPE already. It’s ideal imo.

TheKeatingFive · 19/09/2020 17:11

When they have enough data, they’ll present it for review.

I understand people’s impatience, but a rushed through, dangerous vaccine would be disastrous. It’s important to get this right.

Tfoot75 · 19/09/2020 17:14

I read this week that the US trial is said to have enough data after 32 cases of covid have been diagnosed among participants of the trial - ie, if 6 or fewer of those cases are among people who had the vaccine vs the placebo, it is at least 75% effective so can proceed. I didn't read it in any great detail, but interested to know how other vaccines/countries test efficacy.

Obviously it's pot luck over which is more effective and has fewer side effects - but whichever each country has signed deals for is the one it will use, assuming its effective enough to pass the trial!!

I guess risk of side effects is very low anyway, as vaccines are well understood and most of what they are made of has been used before? As the Oxford trial to our knowledge has only been stopped once for a serious health issue, we can assume its safe anyway, as I think there are multiple thousands who have received it.

What happened to the ‘challenge trial’

Is that the right name when you sign up to be exposed to it?

TheKeatingFive · 19/09/2020 17:21

I think they decided against challenge trials on ethical grounds.

If Sara Gilbert believes that it's safe enough to give to her own children, then I have no qualms about rolling this vaccine out. Sign me (and my family) up!
