Have you been buying a few extras with each shop in anticipation?

I notice many items are already out of stock online.

What sort of things have you been putting away.

We have bought the odd extras with each shop e.g. tinned tomatoes, pasta, loo roll and baking powder.

We have loads of flour anyway as buy in bulk for our bread maker.

Oh, and chocolates for Christmas.

Absolutely not. The stores struggled before because of people buying more than they needed, not because the supply chains ran cold.

I agree with others, this is an irresponsible thread.

LetsBeSensible · 22/09/2020 18:07

@bercows did you panic buy matchmakers lol

SistemaAddict · 22/09/2020 18:12

No panic, that's just a late night snack between us Blush

LetsBeSensible · 22/09/2020 18:24

@bercows munch munch....oh are you saving yours until later?

Scarlettpixie · 22/09/2020 18:28

Yes. I already had a Brexit cupboard but it came in very handy when lockdown first came in. I have been gradually been rebuilding my stock by adding bits each week. I am shopping at a normal level again now.

I tend to shop online anyway and have the next 4 shops booked. I used to shop online before Covid as I prefer it. In recent weeks all restrictions on numbers have been lifted and for the past couple of weeks I haven't had any substitutions. I am prepping for Brexit really but if I am ill or have to quarantine I know we will be able to manage just fine. It is one thing less to worry about.

I think if more people had food in, there would be less panic when something did kick off. No panic buying here when we went into lockdown as I had food in and was able to top up with a local veg box delivery until I could get an online shop. We did have to self isolate back in March.

SistemaAddict · 22/09/2020 18:38

@LetsBeSensible they have gone in the Christmas stash 🎄 not to be eaten until mid December. I'm very strict about the Christmas stash.

Oldbagface · 22/09/2020 18:50

What do you have in your Christmas stash. I have two tubs of chocolate as they were on offer 2 for £7. But want to be prepared.

I'm not doing gifts. Kids are older and two have left home and they all get what they want as and when they want or need it. I bung them a few quid and they're happy with that.

DH is teetotal and I don't drink much so booze isn't needed.

Only read the first page or two Hmm but yes. The last few weeks or so I have added an extra pack of loo roll or passata. Not in case we lock down since yes indeed we still could go to the shops. But in case of self isolation since kids were back in school and we all know (other than those in charge of testing who were caught unawaresHmm) kids with back to school colds inevitably either cough/can't smell or spike a fever.

I haven't done any panic buying but i did err on the generous rather than the 5minute dash last time I went shopping. But this was mid afternoon and nothing was running out so it categorically wasn't panic buying

Bedraggledmumoftwo · 22/09/2020 19:05

Haven't bought anything christmassy- was horrified to see that the sections of stuff I actually wanted to buy had been ditched or shrunk to accommodate advent calendars and Christmas tree decs. I thought they didn't come out until after Halloween. So if anyone is struggling to buy essential stuff they should probably blame Christmas taking over 10% of shelf space and pushing out essential goods in frigging September....

BluebellsGreenbells · 22/09/2020 19:06

I empty a drawer for Christmas in the freeze and buy the turkey pigs in blankets and the like. I stash chocolates when I see them on offer. Fresh stuff is Christmas Eve. Either we have it and all’s good or we go without. It’s one dinner.

Oldbagface · 22/09/2020 19:27

Oh we rarely bother with Xmas dinner. Just have whatever we fancy.

The Christmas stash as it was before the matchmakers

SistemaAddict · 22/09/2020 20:28

I rarely drink but do like the Asda Knock off baileys at Christmas and we are veggie so no meat/fish bills. No family except us, no friends, no entertaining even in normal times. I've still got the wine I bought for last Christmas and never drank. We have loads of veg, Yorkshire puddings and stuffing for Christmas dinner and I make some kind of cake but everyone is usually too full to eat pudding on the day.

MrsFezziwig · 22/09/2020 21:50

You don't remember the fuel strikes

No. Never gone to a petrol station and not got fuel.

So @Oliversmumsarmy presumably you don’t think the Olympic Games or the moon landings ever happened because you didn’t actually participate in them?

LetsBeSensible · 22/09/2020 22:15

I’m going to @Bercows for Xmas this year!
Veggie too so far less of an effort I think. Buy the veg a day or two before. It’s the Xmas treats which are more exciting. Cheeses, crackers, toffeefee, Ferraro Rocher, pretzels....

EmmaGrundyForPM · 22/09/2020 22:36

@Oliversmumsarmy

You don't remember the fuel strikes

No. Never gone to a petrol station and not got fuel.

The fuel strike in 2000 didn't just impact private cars. The lorries couldn't transport any supplies to shops so you couldnt get hold of anything. I had two pre schoolers at the time and it was frightening.

Just because you can't remember it doesn't mean it didnt happen.

Standrewsschool · 22/09/2020 22:50

Went to Morrisons earlier. The toilet roll aisle was practically empty. There was a few rolls of Andres pebble toilet roll left.

JacobReesMogadishu · 23/09/2020 06:26

There was definite a fuel strike in 2000. I was, pregnant and had to walk to midwife checkups. I could actually get fuel as my car ran on 4* not unleaded. But the queues weren’t worth it.

FoolsAssassin · 23/09/2020 06:35

DD was 1 in 2000 and I had a miserable time walking everywhere with her buggy not being able to go and see anyone for well over a week as we had no diesel. My friend is a nurse and eventually was able to tip me off one day that a local station had a delivery in, still remember the relief.

Oliversmumsarmy · 23/09/2020 06:47

presumably you don’t think the Olympic Games or the moon landings ever happened because you didn’t actually participate in them

I said I didn’t remember them not that they didn’t happen.

I am sure that there was probably a fuel shortage but I don’t recall ever queuing up in unduly long queues to get petrol or going to petrol stations and there wasn’t fuel.

A bit like the empty shelves in supermarkets and the panic buying because we were going into lockdown

When a slight adjustment to when and where I shopped meant it didn’t really affect me.

Like people now talking about the return to queuing and the empty shelves as people panic buy.

I like a lot of people are going into our local supermarket without queues and seeing the shelves full.

maverickallthetime · 23/09/2020 06:48

I couldn't get a delivery slot for ages last time and due to being a key worker didn't have time to queue for hours getting in and then paying to get out of the shops. For that reason I'm not going to feel bad that I've got a bit of extra food sorted.

I've got a veg box delivery now and the milkman comes so if things ramp up I know we've got stuff coming our way.

I ALWAYS have a well stocked cupboard though so to get honest it's not that different really. I've already got most stocking fillers for my children as I buy throughout the year to spread the cost

HolyForkinShirt · 23/09/2020 06:48

I haven't prepped specifically for a second wave.

But I do buy in bulk regularly, so I have lots of the essentials. Ie cleaning products/ loo rolls/ non perishables.

Standrewsschool · 23/09/2020 07:29

I remember the fuel shortages. No petrol anywhere.

goteam · 23/09/2020 07:49

@Oliversmumsarmy
"I'm sure there was probably a fuel shortage".

Why is it so hard to accept facts about events that definitely happened and also to accept that other people experienced the pandemic differently to you? Other people did struggle to buy essentials and were anxious about busy supermarkets so have done well to prepare this time around based on their personal circumstances and experiences of lockdown.
