Have you been buying a few extras with each shop in anticipation?

I notice many items are already out of stock online.

What sort of things have you been putting away.

We have bought the odd extras with each shop e.g. tinned tomatoes, pasta, loo roll and baking powder.

We have loads of flour anyway as buy in bulk for our bread maker.

Oh, and chocolates for Christmas.

Since (amongst other things) wholewheat pasta, chopped tomatoes, loo roll and whatnot have re appeared on the shelves, I have been spending approximately 3% extra each supermarket shop (once a week) on select items to ensure I don't run out. This, apparently, makes me an areshole......really? The only non essential items we (two of us) buy are Cadburys Twirl, Jacob's mini Cheddars and.......you know what, that's f**n' it. Now amazingly, during the panic buying, there was no shortage of either of these items.....and we only buy these when they're on offer. To those here decrying the OP and other sensible folk who prepare and calling them selfish aresholes because they are too thick to know the difference between preparing and panic buying.....well, see ya as you stand there in the queue, in the freezing rain, sobbing 'cos littoow Jonny only eats pasta wiv saws onnit, don't forget to wave cheerily as I exit via the other door, clutching my multi pack of Twirls and Cheddars, smug in the knowledge that I'm not the one queuing for the essentials. To the OP and others sensibly preparing, go you girls. To the decryers....I can't even be bothered to waste the time insulting you, you've got enough on your plate ( or in this case, perhaps not......).

We have been doing over the last few weeks, just buying a few things every week. We have discussed buying everything for Christmas in the next couple of weeks, a turkey crown, the sides, a Christmas pudding, now Ocado does M & S we will get as much as we can in the freezer ASAP. I'm going to book at least a month's online shops this week just in case.

How many people getting a months shopping in does it take for us to have empty shelves in the supermarket.

SistemaAddict · 21/09/2020 23:38

@Nat6999 I've got the Christmas stash well and truly under way Grin This is things for the refillable advent calendar, the Christmas sweet bowl, and movie nights.

SistemaAddict · 21/09/2020 23:42

It will last into January and is for 4 of us. I'll add a tin of quality street as they are my favourites from childhood, after eights and anything the dc ask for that's a reasonable request. If we can't do our usual Christmas activities then movie nights with sweets and chocolate are going to be our main entertainment apart from baking and crafting.

SeekingCoffee33 · 21/09/2020 23:44

No and I’m not going to.

Nat6999 · 22/09/2020 00:22

Oliversmumsarmy I don't mean a full month's shopping in one go, I have just booked us a slot every 7-10 days over the next month, I'm not taking a chance of us not being able to get a slot like when we first went in to lockdown. I've got accounts at three different supermarkets & my mum has accounts at two more, we will keep buying in rotation, not take all the slots from one shop.

LetsBeSensible · 22/09/2020 02:16

@Bercows as a lifelong after eight fan I am sorry to say we are not having them this Xmas, got them last year and they’ve been messed with. They’ve gone the way of Creme eggs and become....cheap and weird.
Fry’s peppermint creams will be accompanying the toffefee this year in the Sensible house.

SistemaAddict · 22/09/2020 02:24

I didn't enjoy them last year either. The dc did though. We love Fry's peppermint creams. They need to do bite sized versions. Quality street aren't as nice either but I love the smell of them and it's just not Christmas without them. Last year we tried the m&s version which were nice. I've gone off chocolate in general since part way through lockdown. I find it cloying and has a weird aftertaste. Even the decent stuff. Sad times. The dc continue to love it though hence the stash.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 22/09/2020 02:53

Ever since there was a fuel strike when the DC were tiny and we couldn't get any food, I've always kept a stock of about 2 weeks worth of food.

I never buy stuff we won't eat at some point so it's a question of rotating. I did buy a bit more ahead of a possible no deal Brexit last year, and I was very glad of it when Covid hit. It meant we didnt have to go o the supermarket. We have a milkman so still had fresh milk, and in our village we have a butcher (who also does fresh veg) and a village shop so we topped up there. If we had to isolate for 3-4 weeks then we would manage as the village shop and the butcher both deliver via a team of village volunteers.

I don't perceive myself to be selfish. The additional food was mainly bought years ago and then replaced iyswim. So 20 years ago I bought an extra 2 weeks of food (over a number of weeks i hasten to add) and since then I've always bought a normal amount of food.

netsybetsy · 22/09/2020 04:09

It's okay though, 3 of them were cleaning stuff & I don't mind not cleaning.

A kindred spirit! Smile

MJMG2015 · 22/09/2020 08:57

@Plussizejumpsuit

No becausewhat was shown from the first time round was there weren't actually any shortages just people stockpiling and even then I could eat perfectly well. I understand prepping and stockpiling are different but I don't see a need for either as last time it was absolutely fine.
Could you feed yourself/family for the relevant number of days if you were told today to isolate for 14 days (linger if you have family who get symptoms after you) without asking people to bring you food?
gamerchick · 22/09/2020 09:01

I don't think there were hefty fines for not isolating last time was there?

MRex · 22/09/2020 09:09

Exercise and food shop wasn't barred before, though the shopping was always strongly discouraged and is why the covid support groups were set up, as well as many councils offering additional contacts and support. The problem is that people who can't be bothered with planning don't seem to be the type of people to use the extra support.

MRex · 22/09/2020 09:09

And no, no hefty fines last time.

gamerchick · 22/09/2020 09:17

It's different now definitely. When neighbours are being actively encouraged to tell if someone isolating now going out.

But I'm assuming those naysayers will make full use of the support by the council if it works, with enforced isolating now when they get stuck.

Or are we back to 'we'll just get a supermarket delivery' we had back in February? Because that looked fun.

It does make me laugh. When having no savings is looked down on, but saying have enough food to last a couple of weeks is the worst crime ever Confused

yumscrumfatbum · 22/09/2020 09:27

I can't afford to buy extras, have a tight budget. I'm hoping that the supermarkets will be in a better position to predict people buying extra and that supplies will be more consistent.

Khajit · 22/09/2020 09:36

Yeah, I totally saw this happening before winter so I have had a packet of extra toilet rolls and a couple of tubs of baby formula kept aside for the last couple of months. It really scared me when we couldn't get formula for my newborn last time and I'm not taking the chance again. I've got about 2 weeks worth of food in the freezer incase we need to isolate as there aren't many delivery slots available in my area.

Also got a couple of new toys put aside too incase the schools close and I need to entertain my older one. If not needed she can have them for Christmas.

I'm not stockpiling but I do like to be organised.

I’m certainly starting Christmas food shopping earlier this year

(Dont generally shop online at the moment)

BluebellsGreenbells · 22/09/2020 12:19

There was a fuel strike. A lot of people couldn’t get petrol.
