Have you been buying a few extras with each shop in anticipation?

I notice many items are already out of stock online.

What sort of things have you been putting away.

We have bought the odd extras with each shop e.g. tinned tomatoes, pasta, loo roll and baking powder.

We have loads of flour anyway as buy in bulk for our bread maker.

Oh, and chocolates for Christmas.

I think you will find the fuel strike was in 2012 which is actually 8 years ago not 20, but let's not let facts get in the way of frothing..

NerrSnerr · 22/09/2020 12:31

There were strikes in 2000 as well https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FuelprotestssintheeUnited_Kingdom

I remember it well as it was when I started university,

gamerchick · 22/09/2020 12:42

@Oliversmumsarmy

Ever since there was a fuel strike when the DC were tiny and we couldn't get any food, I've always kept a stock of about 2 weeks worth of food

When was this as I don’t remember there being ever a shortage

You don't remember the fuel strikes?

I'm pretty sure We're going back 20 year here. Hmm
candourclegane · 22/09/2020 13:42

There were fuel strikes at the start of this century. I remember the queues in London.

We always have a good stock of food. Things like different lentils, chickpeas, different dried beans, tinned tomatoes and baked beans, frozen veg, bread and milk in the freezer, meals I have batched cooked and frozen.

We have done this for years. Me and DH both hate food shopping so prefer to go as little as possible but buy enough when we do go to last us for at least 2 months.

We run our stocks fairly low but never use them all up before we go shopping again.

I think it is a sensible thing to do. About 40 years ago we got snowed in for over a week and that was in Kent. Where we live now gets far more snow than Kent.

Earlier this year all the roads in to the local town were too flooded to be able to drive along. With the amount of rain we get that could happen any time. It was just rain pouring off the fields. We are high up and not close to any rivers.

You could be ill and not able to get out, your car could be unusable for a length of time. Also you may not be able to get a delivery. If the roads are flooded or blocked with snow a delivery van could not get through either.

I find it strange that so many people only have enough food for a week or even less time

lynsey91 · 22/09/2020 14:10

I meant to say when lockdown happened we did not need to go shopping for about 6 weeks as we had loads of food including pasta, flour etc so we certainly did not contribute to the empty shelves.

Even when we did go shopping we hardly bought anything apart from fresh fruit and veg

ChavvySexPond · 22/09/2020 14:19

We've had two weeks worth of food on hand since February in case we had to self isolate. But early in Lockdown I under-estimated how much more loo roll we get through when we are all at home all the time. Confused

Oliversmumsarmy · 22/09/2020 14:43

You don't remember the fuel strikes

No. Never gone to a petrol station and not got fuel.

I'm 40 and it's happened to me twice, 2000 and 2012.
RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 22/09/2020 15:09

Its the 2000 one I was referring to

Dh likes to fill the cars up when they are between a quarter and half a tank

He never Got over it 😀

So in your world that means it didn't happen? Grin
LetsBeSensible · 22/09/2020 16:08

Just went to the supermarket for my usual shop. A combination of new students arriving and a tiny bit of panic buying had left the hand wash and toilet roll shelves empty.
I bought some unnecessary mint matchmakers which caught my eye.

wonkylegs · 22/09/2020 16:11

I haven't stockpiled but we do have a fully stocked larder and have been replacing stuff immediately rather than waiting for a big shop. The only thing that is additional is I now have a few pints of milk in the freezer but we've already had to isolate once (negative test) and due to having school age kids and a dr husband can see we will have to again and although I have lovely neighbours I don't want to ask more than I have to.
We do have a lot of garden produce in the freezer, and in jars thanks to a bumper crop this year so the kids are going to have to like jams, jellies, crumbles, pies and pickles - lockdown or not!

CorianderLord · 22/09/2020 16:22

Why would I? We were still allowed to the shop in the first wave?

The80sweregreat · 22/09/2020 16:23

I queued for an hour during the great fuel shortage in 2000!
That was a long week of worry about getting petrol.

NerrSnerr · 22/09/2020 16:33

@CorianderLord wouldn't you want to get enough for 2 weeks just in case your household need to self isolate?

gamerchick · 22/09/2020 16:36

We didn't have forced under the threat of huge fines if we didn't first time around.
ChavvySexPond · 22/09/2020 16:44

@CorianderLord

People who were shielding or self-isolating weren't. And we're all at risk of the latter.
ChavvySexPond · 22/09/2020 16:46

@CorianderLord

The less contact we all have with other people the faster the virus level subsides and we all get back to normal.

It's what's best for the country rather than what you are "allowed" to do.

I saw a posh lady elbow a pensioner out of the way to get the last loaf. Confused
MRex · 22/09/2020 16:59

@Oliversmumsarmy and others - For those who won't prepare, I set up a thread with info about how to get your shopping if you do need to isolate: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/coronavirus/4030369-Links-to-support-sites-isolating-quarantine-financial-long-covid-etc.

BluebellsGreenbells · 22/09/2020 17:02

Do you really need people to answer this? Yes you can shop - but some things weren’t available... it’s not difficult

SistemaAddict · 22/09/2020 17:36

@LetsBeSensible I might have added 3 packs of orange matchmakers when I called for some sourdough. I've not had sourdough since February and it was so nice. It's only the second time I've been to the local co-op attached to Texaxo. I'd rather shop online.
