Have you been buying a few extras with each shop in anticipation?

I notice many items are already out of stock online.

What sort of things have you been putting away.

We have bought the odd extras with each shop e.g. tinned tomatoes, pasta, loo roll and baking powder.

We have loads of flour anyway as buy in bulk for our bread maker.

Oh, and chocolates for Christmas.

But if you have to isolate for 14 days you can't get to the shops. And other people self isolating may well have booked all the delivery slots.

People who can afford to and have the space should have got their act together and have enough to tide them over. I'm a LP and could afford to stock up over the last year so I don't tip into crisis mode if I can't get to the shops.

CrunchyCarrot · 19/09/2020 14:20

I am seriously impressed with Sweden's approach to being prepared! It is common sense to put items by that will be of use should the worst happen in an emergency. Why wouldn't you, if it's a matter of survival, or getting through a bad patch.

Honestly, some folk here who think it's silly, you'll be the first ones clamouring for help from those of us with stocks, and you'll only have yourself to blame because you could have made some provisions when times were good, but didn't.

Dominicgoings · 19/09/2020 14:22

@SockYarn

Fuck me, people really aren't getting it.

Two threads in as many days talking about shortages, "prepping", stockpiling, getting in a few extra things, buying twice as much pasta.

Are people really not getting that these RIDICULOUS threads are stoking the whole issue? 2020 really has proved that the average intelligence level is low, and falling.

And don't start with the "Well, I'M not the problem, I'm only buying a few extra packs of pasta. You have to be prepared. It's everyone ELSE who's the problem".

Stupid, stupid people.

Essentially this. Take some fucking responsibility for what you post. Take account of the fact that many people reading these threads are already anxious. Stop feeding those fears. Just fucking STOP! And MNHQ PLEASE start moderating this kind of stuff more effectively.
TheArtOfStoryTelling · 19/09/2020 14:27

Agreed with the above. If all you're doing is adding an extra packet of pasta to your shop or whatever, and you're REALLY not doing any significant stockpiling, then do you really need to make a thread about it on here? What is the point?

SistemaAddict · 19/09/2020 14:35

The brexit prepping threads got me to ensure I had enough essentials for my family that got us through various things so far. If threads help just one vulnerable family to get through adversity if whatever cause then that's a positive thing. If someone goes out and clears the shelves then that's on them.

cantkeepawayforever · 19/09/2020 14:37

As everyone in the household is in education,. in 'bubbles' ranging in size from 35 to 1,500, we have to be prepared to isolate for 14 days at any moment.

So I have deliveries booked for the next 3 weeks (as far ahead as the system allows) and am planning on a 2-weekly menu cycle rather than a 1-weekly one so that the minimum of supplies we have in the house is 7 days' worth, which we would hit the day the next delivery is expected.

Just in case a deliveries is cancelled, i do also have a small box of 'absolute basics' - porridge oats, dried milk, pasta, tinned tomatoes, pesto, bread flour + yeast, tinned soup, tuna, plus some frozen goods - so we could eke out a very boring diet for the second 7 days of a 14 day isolation period if absolutely required.

Essentially, I treat it as my parents did when living in an isolated hill farm - always be prepared to be unable to get out for at least 2 weeks in the winter.

SockYarn · 19/09/2020 14:40

If threads help just one vulnerable family to get through adversity if whatever cause then that's a positive thing.

Bollocks.

All these threads are doing is planting the PANIC seed in people's brains which will be eating away until the next time they do their shopping, and decide that actually, they do need 10 bags of pasta, 24 tins of soup and 5 packs of bog roll. Because they're most definitely not panic buying, they're PREPPING which is entirely different, justifable and it's everyone else who is panic buying and clearing the shelves. Never mind poor old Mrs McGinty who hasn't got the internet and turns up at Asda to find the shelves empty.

But you carry on consoling yourself with the trite and short-sighted belief that you're actually helping vulnerable people "get through".

Bull. Shit.

HotPatootiebootie · 19/09/2020 14:41

I started prepping again about 4 weeks ago at the same time I started my Xmas shopping.

Pantry has:-

10kg rice
5kg pasta
2kg each of various lentils and split peas
12000 teabags
3 jars coffee
12 coconut milk
4 different types of curry paste
12 Passata
18 tin tomatoes
4 Tom purée
Loads of stock cubes
6 pasta bake
8 each tin corn/carrots/peas/new spuds
12 tin tuna
8 tin hotdogs
24 noodles
9kg bread flour
10 various jar sauces
6kg various box cereals
3kg porridge oats
4 Tortilla kit
Loads of various spices and herbs, casserole packets etc

Freezer has

10kg various chicken cuts
2kg diced lamb
8lb sausages
2kg meat balls
4kg mince beef
2kg bacon
8 bags of various potato stuff
Loads of frozen sliced peppers, casserole packs, diced onions, mixed veg and frozen fruit. Maybe 4 of each?

Large bottles shampoo, loads of bin bags and 72 loo rolls.

I have made brilliant progress with the Christmas presents for my kids and expect to be done in 2-3 weeks. Going to order Xmas meat for the freezer as soon as I can and prepay for my fruit, veg and cheese from the local farm shop and that's that.

Whenwillow · 19/09/2020 14:43

Not one prepper has ever advocated doing anything other than grabbing the odd extra here and there.
Please explain how the multpack of bog roll I bought in July is going to impact on what is available in October?

HotPatootiebootie · 19/09/2020 14:44

Ask the people saying this is pointless and irresponsible.... I am disabled and have a really shitty immune system. I really struggled to get delivery shots last time and am building up a spooky so that I don't NEED to go to the shops.

This is not panic buying. It's called being prepared.

I always have a pretty well stocked large but I make my own bread and couldn't get flour for 4 weeks last time. I'm not taking that risk again.

But this thread is about adding extra to the shopping now, in response to the speculation about a second lockdown. Not about buying extra in July.
SockYarn · 19/09/2020 14:45

Pantry has:-

And there we have it. A perfect stockpile. Hmm

SistemaAddict · 19/09/2020 14:46

Yes, it helped my vulnerable elderly mum. It's helped my elderly godparents. All vulnerable and/or shielding abs could t get delivery slots for weeks. There's such a bizarre hatred for those who are organised and prepared on here. I've been to a supermarket once since March and have no need to buy beyond my usual amount so won't be part of any panic buying that happens in future and wasn't part of it before either. A two week stash built up over 18 months isn't going to cause shortages.

gamerchick · 19/09/2020 14:47

If you're anxious then hide the thread. Nobody is asking you to repeatedly post and I'm so done with people trying to dictate what we can and can't talk about Hmm

We also don't have moderators on here as you should know.

Look everyone needs to make sure they have enough to last them 2 weeks at short notice thats just a fact. I've already had one kid sent home from.school and it took 2 days to get a test.

If other people go out and go overboard thats entirely on them not anyone else.

And supermarkets certainly weren't complaining when people piled their trollies high weeks after the sensible limits should have implemented. Happy to take the money before throwing their customers under a bus laying the blame at their door instead of their own .

People are responsible for their own actions no one else.

cantkeepawayforever · 19/09/2020 14:50

TheArtOfStoryTelling · 19/09/2020 14:52

Why? Can't you get deliveries when you're in isolation?

I live in a so-called third world country and I never had any issue getting a supermarket delivery. So never needed any extra supplies than I have on any given week of my life. Is the UK situation really that terrible?

MilesJuppIsMyBitch · 19/09/2020 14:53

Shielding here (still...), & certainly keep well-stocked. It's bonkers not to.

Once again, we have a thread started by a vulnerable person who would be more impacted than many by a lock-down, and once again we have delightful posters coming on and calling her and others like her 'stupid, stupid people'.

Also entirely missing the irony of claiming that it will negatively effect 'Mrs McGinty' Confused, when the the OP falls into that category of person herself!

I think we all know who the wankers are on this thread.

WokesFromHome · 19/09/2020 14:54

I have started stocking up on stuff yes. I am more relaxed this time and I am not buying some of the things I did last time. So for example, I am not stocking up on tin toms, beans, soups, pasta, paracetamol, Calpol, toilet roll and cleaning products as I either have enough or have realised that I don't like them. We have been finishing off this stash over the past few months.

I usually go to the supermarket 3 or 4 times a week and my DH is always complaining there is no food in the house. I am just making sure I have a very good stock of everything I use to cook from scratch. I can get meat, fish, veg and bread delivered so not bothered about that.

For me, it is about maintaining my sanity if we are semi locked down again. I am NOT queueing for an hour to get into a shop in a mask and then spending an our doing a massive shop. I am just not doing it. I'll buy stuff now and order deliveries.

HotPatootiebootie · 19/09/2020 14:55

@SockYarn

A perfect stockpile?

Believe me with 4 adults and a teen in the house that won't go very far. And you must have missed the bit where I said that I am disabled and had to shield. I have ALWAYS had full cupboard but this is me doing what is best for MY Family . You don't want to do that then it's fine. I really couldn't give a shit 🤷🏼‍♀️. But hey, I'll post some photos for you later so you can really get your knickers in a twist.

MintyCedric · 19/09/2020 14:55

Yes I have and will continue to do so.

I work in a school and have two very vulnerable elderly parents who I help care for. I'm less concerned about lockdown than having to quarantine or God forbid, catching the bloody thing.

Given my work and the fact that DD is also back at (the same) the chances of both are relatively high so I'm not taking my chances.

cantkeepawayforever · 19/09/2020 14:56

In lockdown, supermarket deliveries were impossible to get in many parts of the country. I tried everything I could to get deliveries for my vulnerable and very elderly parents - only managing to get a couple of slots at long intervals over the whole period. They have ended up having to settle for click and collect even now, with actual home delivery still being unavailable for them.
Trees2905 · 19/09/2020 14:56

No. And anyone who does is an idiot.

Angrymum22 · 19/09/2020 14:57

Popped into Waitrose this morning for a few things. They have started the queuing system again to limit numbers inside. Picked up an extra pack of Andrew because they were on offer but the essential/cheap toilet roll area had been stripped bare. So it has already started.
I would agree with pops who have enough in for sudden quarantine but panic buying for a “last resort” lockdown ( media invented) is ridiculous. We all know that the shops will not close and will not run out of anything.
