Have you been buying a few extras with each shop in anticipation?

I notice many items are already out of stock online.

What sort of things have you been putting away.

We have bought the odd extras with each shop e.g. tinned tomatoes, pasta, loo roll and baking powder.

We have loads of flour anyway as buy in bulk for our bread maker.

Oh, and chocolates for Christmas.

Look everyone needs to make sure they have enough to last them 2 weeks at short notice thats just a fact

Look no they don't and unless you live up a mountain in remote Wales, no you don't. Even my little local Co-Op will deliver to the vulnerable or self-isolating.

It's not about anxiety. It's about some people whipping themselves into a frenzy about how much stuff they've got at home. Enough stuff to last months, but still go out and buy more! Replace what you've used! Fuck the people who can't afford to stockpile (because that's what it is, it's not being organised, or "prepping"). Fuck the people who haven't got internet and have to rely on going into shops to get their food.

I'm all right Jack with my 12,000 tea bags and 10kg of rice and I'm too deluded to see that my ridiculous "prepping" is contributing to the shortages.

So, so utterly selfish. And thick. But mostly selfish.

cantkeepawayforever · 19/09/2020 14:59

We all know that the shops will not close and will not run out of anything.

However, if you have to isolate, you cannot go to the shops - in that respect, it is different from lockdown. If DH, DD and I all have to self-isolate due to cases in our bubbles, nobody will be able to leave the house for 14 days. What there is in the shops at that point is immaterial - none of us will be able to go and buy it.

Whatwouldscullydo · 19/09/2020 15:00

Why? Can't you get deliveries when you're in isolation?

Getting deliveries is luck.half the time. Ocado just cancelled a load that were weeks old after this m&s merger thing.

There is also a minimum spend and that might not he affordable for someone who is now not getting paid becuase its not them who's sick.

Aldi and lidl don't do delivery either

Plus deliveries also mean that you have contact with people. You touch their crates or have to be in close proximity to take the bags etc

Passthecake30 · 19/09/2020 15:01

I’ve got an extra packet of toilet roll, thats it. I’ve changed my shopping habits though - weekly meal plan with no planned top up shops as I hate wearing a mask (so avoid the need to). We always have extras in the cupboards so if we had to quarantine, we wouldn’t starve.

cantkeepawayforever · 19/09/2020 15:02

Even my little local Co-Op will deliver to the vulnerable or self-isolating.

However, once cases rise still further and most schools have cases in most year groups, self-isolating will be so common that delivery to everyone simply won't be possible.

In lockdown, everyone except the ill or shielding or someone with a case in the household could go shopping,.

At the moment, nobody who is self isolating due to contact with a positive case can go out. At all.

MintyCedric · 19/09/2020 15:03

Just because someone is prepared it doesn't automatically make them a selfish prick.

For the first 4 weeks of lockdown my parents and I had to share delivery slots limited to 80 items which is not easy with 4 people and 2 cats to feed plus household essentials to buy.

I offered help to a couple of friends who were shielding, and gave the last of my previous stash to my best mate's neighbour who'd been let down by the local food bank.

I'd be very happy to do the same again if the situation arose.

SockYarn · 19/09/2020 15:03

Why? Can't you get deliveries when you're in isolation?

Of course you can. Or you do as we did for friends who had Covid back in March and take them stuff. But of course everyone who is "prepping" has no family, no friends, no neighbours, lives in an area where there are no volunteer helpers. Oh no. The ONLY option is stockpiling, potentially to the detriment of lots of other families, in worse situations. But we're OK with our stash. Hmm

cantkeepawayforever · 19/09/2020 15:05

I do think there is a difference between planning for the obviously foreseeable (having enough food in to make it through a 14 day isolation period) and stocking up in amounts that a 6 month lockdown would barely make a dent in.....

MilesJuppIsMyBitch · 19/09/2020 15:07

OP asks others about their prepping plans, the a couple of posts down says: 'I'm mostly bedbound and dh my carer and carer to our disabled children. If DH husband catches it and becomes incapacitated we are screwed so popping to the supermarket is not a risk he wishes to take.'

Sock yarn (about all preppers) 'So, so utterly selfish. And thick. But mostly selfish.'

Honestly, you sound unhinged.

QueenOllie · 19/09/2020 15:08

I went a month without being able to get a delivery in March. Despite being vulnerable, because I hadn't got my shielding letter i hadn't got a slot. I got the boris food box after 6 weeks and used up what I had in my cupboards
Didn't want to go out due to the shielding bit, and I had no cash and wasn't happy to give people my card to food shop for me
Cupboards are usually full anyway and it paid off because I managed off what I had despite some interesting meals!

Whatwouldscullydo · 19/09/2020 15:08

There are plenty of people who don't have local friends or family.

Many elderly parents are on the shielding list. Its hardly unheard of. But of course its far better that we are all reduced to eating the bird seed next door threw out in the garden rather than ensure we had 2 weeks supply before we lost pay or infected a delivery driver

Angel2702 · 19/09/2020 15:09

No only stocking up on Halloween and Christmas bits so I can still make it nice for the kids.

MilesJuppIsMyBitch · 19/09/2020 15:12

In fact, people should only fill their bird-feeders with one days worth of bird-seed, in the case the bastard birds SELFISHLY STOCKPILE. Greedy, feathery cocks.

QueenOllie · 19/09/2020 15:12

To add I don't "stockpile" as such
At the minute I have two jars of peanut butter, one open, one spare. When I open the spare, I order another. Some people might only order another when they finish 1 jar
If something is on offer that I use then I buy a couple. So peanut butter is on 3 for 2, or drops in price I buy 2-3 depending on the offer
Just how I've always shopped

hitchhikingghost · 19/09/2020 15:13

Where I’m from our government expect us to manage on our own for a couple of weeks, and to help others if needed. It would be considered selfish NOT to be prepared for any crises. We are also told to be prepared for the internet and electricity not working, in which case no you couldn’t get any deliveries or pay by card. And no food deliveries to the shops either.

Oldbagface · 19/09/2020 15:15

@MilesJuppIsMyBitch exactly. I doubt most have read the whole thread, just jump in to spew bile about something they don't have any knowledge of.

It does make me laugh, there's some funny fish on MN. I'm convinced some just like a bun fight for the sake of it. Calling disabled and vulnerable people stupid and selfish for buying an extra pack of pasta or a couple of cans of tomatoes is pretty sad. I wonder who they bitch at on other Saturdays?

Perhaps they like to tell at disabled people using disabled parking spaces they are selfish or think that it's really unfair that sheilding people were given a government parcel.

I despair at MNetters sometimes Confused

I have a full freezer, pantry full of tins and dried goods and long life milk which I keep all year round but have bought extra vit D3, paracetamol, hand gels, antiviral sprays and toiletries. My dh is on shielding list so if another wave I will not go out either. I have got Xmas chocolates this week as on offer in Morrisons. We shop online most of time anyway. I have stockpiled cat food and cat milk as I have 5 cats so would struggle to feed them if rationed again. They had to eat some dog food in last lockdown as could only order 6 cans of cat food per order do lasted them 2 days and supplemented with crunchies they are not too keen on.

I comfort myself that most people don't think like this. Irl people tend to be much more sympathetic ime.

And I find them funny too, but also frustrating. Just think outside your own experience for 5 minutes & a whole new world opens up!

whirlwindwallaby · 19/09/2020 15:19

What good is an open supermarket if it is empty when I finish work? I'd rather keep a few weeks of food in. Though I am only replacing things as I use them now to keep stocked up.

babbi · 19/09/2020 15:20

@froggygoneacourting. This ! 100% correct .
I work in the drinks industry which obviously overlaps logistics with the food industry and its all very lean ...

To anyone watching me buying trolley fulls in February- yes that early - not only was I feeding my immediate family but 4 elderly parents who were shielding .
I had to be organised, I was responsible for feeding 10 people during the lockdown.

Whatwouldscullydo · 19/09/2020 15:22

I despair at MNetters sometimes

It was worse last time. Funnily enough its considered bad firm to not have a freezer drawer dull of beige food incase of spontaneous visit from a child who won't eat anything not covered in bread crumbs, amd everyone is super organised for Xmas having bought the presents for the next one in the January sales. They even have w years supply of birthday presents from the book people so they can attend every party their kids are invited to.

But for some reason its bad form to ensure you have enough food should you become sick and can't go out.

SallySeven · 19/09/2020 15:24

I've always done that QueenOllie but The offers have been few and far between in our closest supermarket since lockdown tbh.

I've been going to Aldi more to get my revenge😉.

Oldbagface · 19/09/2020 15:26

@MilesJuppIsMyBitch I agree about irl. Our community have been great. They've collected prescriptions for us etc.

Also, as we were organised we were able to feed an elderly neighbour who lives alone and is still too frightened to leave the house.

Luckily she has my mobile number and dh just takes food across which has been quarantined.

Not sure what she would've done to be honest. Glad we don't have to find out.

But yeah, people like us according to some on MN are really selfish 😂
