Have you been buying a few extras with each shop in anticipation?

I notice many items are already out of stock online.

What sort of things have you been putting away.

We have bought the odd extras with each shop e.g. tinned tomatoes, pasta, loo roll and baking powder.

We have loads of flour anyway as buy in bulk for our bread maker.

Oh, and chocolates for Christmas.

This only ends up having a negative impact on the vulnerable and the elderly who can't access goods and online delivery slots because those people who are perfectly capable to go out if needed are being selfish...

Buying a bit extra every week has no impact of the elderly or vulnerable.

Panic buying would.

FubsyRanbler · 19/09/2020 11:37

I’ve never met a prepper, online or IRL, who thought panic buying was a good thing. Or who did it.
It’s the last-minute types who panic when they think the shit is about to hit the fan and they have nothing, and no back-up plans.

Bupkis · 19/09/2020 11:44

We kept a stock up because ds is vulnerable and we were supporting someone who was elderly

MRex · 19/09/2020 11:49

Lots of people buying 4 bags of pasta now leads to more pasta stocks brought in by Just-in-time supermarket systems next week, as well as a cohort who no longer need pasta. It's not only "no impact" on those who haven't prepared, in a situation where people start buying extra it's actually helpful.

SistemaAddict · 19/09/2020 11:51

Waitrose delivery is free. They are the only ones I could get priority slots with. They've been amazing through all this and have just started sending money off vouchers again. I turned the cupboard under the stairs into a pantry in early lockdown with a shelving unit. I

Bedsheets4knickers · 19/09/2020 12:31

No we hadn't , until we had 4 days this week between booking and test and getting the results and didn't have much food in .
So yes will be prepping for extra week or two worth of goods x

Abricot1993 · 19/09/2020 12:48

There is a difference between stock piling and panic buying. Here in Switzerland every household is required by law to keep a stockpile of certain items. Also the federal government has stock piles of additional supplies such as antibiotics, face masks, coffee. There was a public vote on whether to keep coffee on the list and it has stayed! The Swiss are planned and prepared if a little unspontaneous

ChavvySexPond · 19/09/2020 12:55

@Dominicgoings

Store cupboard. Pantry. Ocado.

And meanwhile in the REAL world Hmm

If those of us who can stock up do, then stuff will still be on the shelves when those who couldn't stock up go looking.

Here is an article about it

BeyondsConstantBangingHeadache · 19/09/2020 13:12

I've been getting bits. Hopefully I'm "allowed" on mn as a physically disabled shielder, with no car and no local supermarket. Took til June for my priority shopping delivery slots to be sorted last time!

Sweden recently sent out a brochure at the request of the Government to every household. There are check-lists on items that are your own responsibility to keep at home, for your own sake and also to be able to help others. It is very clear that help will be provided first to those who need it the most, and that the majority will have to cope on their own. It’s a very interesting read!

I just read it, very interesting and tells it like it is
I wonder how people in the UK would react to something like that🤔

hitchhikingghost · 19/09/2020 13:36

@Heffalooomia No sugarcoating, I think it’s a great idea. During the week this was sent out there was lot of talk and awareness around it, in schools and on tv etc.

MRex · 19/09/2020 13:39

How recently @hitchhikingghost? It's quite clear in suggesting a risk of war, as well as other disasters.

I agree but I don't think our government would go for it because they don't want the kind of egalitarian society that Sweden aspires to and is.
(At least that is my my idea of Sweden, it might not be well informed in which case please excuse me)

eeeyoresmiles · 19/09/2020 13:43

We were down to our second to last loo roll when Ocado cancelled our delivery back in April. We borrowed a 9 pack from my friend who was better prepared.

I bet your friend was delighted when you returned that pack...

SallySeven · 19/09/2020 13:48

Toolatetooearly, I don't care (so long as you aren't asking me to sort out a shop for you!) so no need to apologise.

Or unless you have some weird resentment to people who do think it's normal to keep a small stock in (as seen evidenced on threads like this! 😄)

hitchhikingghost · 19/09/2020 13:49

@MRex this brochure was first sent out in 1943. Then this updated one was sent out in 2018, and they added the word ’crises’. It was sent out because of higher risk of terrorism, climate change, dependency on the internet for information and also higher risk of war. It was actually a bit worrying, but then again we probably need it to wake up a bit.

NerrSnerr · 19/09/2020 13:49

We had to self isolate for 2 weeks in March and it really helped me figure out how much of everything we need. I have made sure we have enough of the basics and store cupboard easy stuff for the children.

I have been picking up craft stuff for the children just in case were locked down/ self isolating when the weather is awful. We had quite a well stocked craft cupboard but did loads of stuff over the summer so slowly stocking it up again. I think most people will be getting home made decorations for Christmas this year!

hitchhikingghost · 19/09/2020 13:52

@Heffalooomia You are probably right.

This. Right now we have just in time supply chains that work and can respond to small increases by ordering more stock from producers, for most ordinary products.
salemcat · 19/09/2020 14:03

We shop monthly & always buy slightly more than we need due to our location & the fact I like full cupboards & freezers. We rotate & use everything we buy🤷‍♀️

MadameBlobby · 19/09/2020 14:05

No

Shops were open throughout and will be again. If everyone shopped normally there would be no shortages.

SockYarn · 19/09/2020 14:08

Fuck me, people really aren't getting it.

Two threads in as many days talking about shortages, "prepping", stockpiling, getting in a few extra things, buying twice as much pasta.

Are people really not getting that these RIDICULOUS threads are stoking the whole issue? 2020 really has proved that the average intelligence level is low, and falling.

And don't start with the "Well, I'M not the problem, I'm only buying a few extra packs of pasta. You have to be prepared. It's everyone ELSE who's the problem".

Stupid, stupid people.

NotAKaren · 19/09/2020 14:09

No, I think people should have realised that shops will remain open after the last experience
