what are you buying for a winter lockdown?

Not prepping, not panic buying - just, what do you think would make lockdown in the dark, grey winter bearable?

Disney channel subscription
craft stuff
baking stuff
yoga mats and skipping ropes
seeds to grow herbs (can you do that in the winter on a windowsill?)
clothes and boots for the kids for winter walks

Any other ideas?

Books
Board games
Candles
Lots of chocolate

RhubarbTea · 18/09/2020 23:05

A Panasonic breadmaker
New DAB radio as mine had broken
Yarn for knitting socks
Board games
Nice candle from The White Company that smells of winter nights outside (Highland Escape)
Warm waterproof coat for walks and trips to the shops
Little wooden stool for sitting while weeding/gardening or just sitting outside in my tiny front garden for a bit (no back garden, busy road)
Nice throw for the sofa
A metric fucktonne of books for the to-read pile.

I highly recommend Orchard Games Bus Stop for 3 year olds (lots of learning opportunities, fun & not too mind bending for adults). The kids loved lots of the others, especially Tummy Ache- but they made me want to rip my head off!! Except that matching ones, I didn't mind those too much.

I don't mind Tummy Ache, my parents still have our version from childhood, we got it from a Blue Peter tabletop sale, probably around 35 years ago.

As for me, nothing - I can use all the stuff that is still hanging around from March.

Maybe it was just that one of them was absolutely obsessed with it and we 'overplayed' it?!

I can't stand 'shopping list' either, probably for the same reason!!

DipSwimSwoosh · 19/09/2020 08:21

Wetsuit for winter swims. Shoes for running.

CeibaTree · 19/09/2020 08:35

We are concentrating on decluttering before we start to think seriously about what we can get to make a lockdown winter more bearable. But I have just ordered an Orchard games bundle on eBay thanks to this thread :)

We are planning on getting a chest freezer though and stocking up on Cook meals, and also making sure everyone has decent waterproofs so we can spend as much time outdoors as possible no matter the weather!

CaptainMyCaptain · 19/09/2020 08:37

@SunbathingDragon

Thermals for outdoor socialising.
This. Warm clothes and layers for spending time outdoors.
CaptainMyCaptain · 19/09/2020 08:39

Wool for knitting and a small stash of fabric for sewing.

RB68 · 19/09/2020 09:06

Just don't forget the flippin loo roll this time or the yeast for baking OH and some flour

TheBeatGoesOn · 19/09/2020 09:19

Nothing. We will still be allowed to go out shopping. I'm definitely not panic buying.

frozendaisy · 19/09/2020 09:22

I now want a wood fired hot tub! Doh

dudsville · 19/09/2020 09:24

I think we're in an ok position here, we're wfh now anyway and social distancing still so a lockdown wouldn't change much, though I do hope any lockdown doesn't get in the way of completing some building works we have scheduled. And this thread sent me off in search of my 3 winter coats, moved from their regular storage site owing to the building works, I suddenly worried they'd maybe gone with the last tip!

NewStart2020MyArse · 19/09/2020 09:27

Ffs there will be no winter lockdown. We can't afford it.

frozendaisy · 19/09/2020 09:29

I am made the house a promise we will do all the jobs we can, garden and house, with the stuff we already have before buying some more.

Once that is done we paint the stairway/hall if we can agree on the shade of blue! We could be some time I want warm majestic blue DH wants bright fresh blue. There is no in between.

frozendaisy · 19/09/2020 09:38

Not a full lockdown but I think we will be encouraged to entertain ourselves indoors and avoid too many social events and the dark cold misery of winter is usually broken up with panto, fairs, carols, bonfire, nights out. Which are not going to happen this year.
Firef1y72 · 19/09/2020 09:39

Just ordered
Squat rack
Olympic barbell
Adjustable bench
100kg bumper plates

If I could afford/had enough space it I'd get a spin bike and concept rower too.

Missed my heavy lifting while the gyms were shut and dont trust the government one bit that if this supposed 2 week pause happens it won't end up being months again.

TwentyViginti · 19/09/2020 10:03

@CloudsCanLookLikeSheep

A big oversized hoodie. So I can get fat and hide it in the hoodie. Actually hide my whole self in the hoodie and not emerge until this fucking thing is over.
That is my plan too. Fat is insulating! Grin
alliejay81 · 19/09/2020 10:08

Still planning. I've bought a book on Hygge to help me!

SallySeven · 19/09/2020 10:11

I'm planning to declutter all my paper piles. That'll keep me occupied.Wink

Apart from necessary food (and necessary socks and thermal underwear) I'm in the mood to buy zero.

Kid's Christmas is tricky. They are older and haven't responded to my asking for firm requests. I've told them they are likely going to be disappointed!

We are planting spring bulbs in pots today which I don't normally do.

keziahthecat · 19/09/2020 10:47

Really tempted to buy a hotel chocolat velvetiser. Might get it as a Christmas present to myself! Other than that some fairy lights and candles to make the living room cosy.

LetsPlayAGame20 · 19/09/2020 10:53

Haven't thought about it tbh.
There want anything I couldn't get in asda, tesco etc when doing the groceries and kept them entertained. From garden toys to crafts, films books etc.
But u have done majority of my Xmas shopping maybe 90% so prepared in that way.. But I am everybyear so it's not any different

Cyw2018 · 19/09/2020 11:01

Ikea vaxer hydroponics set up is windowsill sized and you grow small stuff like herbs, lettuce and even tomatoes (micro Tom variety) all year round.

Lovemusic33 · 19/09/2020 11:35

Nothing 🤔

We already have most the things mentioned. I’m not wasting any more money on board games or jigsaw puzzles (bought loads first time around).

We will be outside as much as possible and already have warm clothes (as we go outside every winter).

I have planted some winter veg in the garden so will hopefully have some food growing and herbs, I don’t usually bother growing in the winter.

If anything I will be buying less because I won’t need nice clothes to go out in, won’t need new shoes, though could do with walking boots.

PattyPan · 19/09/2020 16:44

I didn’t buy any stuff to do the first time round because we’ve both been working the whole time and don’t have DC. But DP is not a winter person so I am now strongly considering a fire pit and velvetiser. We have loads of books and Netflix etc but bought a jigsaw on eBay this morning and thinking about getting some craft bits too and/or board games that are good with 2 people. I need new wellies as well, discovered last week that mine have cracked.
