Why the pub curfew?

I don't understand the pub curfew in the North East. I think the reason they haven't closed the pubs entirely is for economical reasons, which is likely to be a controversial matter. However, what is the reason for making them close at 10pm? How does that make a difference to the spread of covid?

This is a guess but it might be to do with shorter opening hours might mean people consume less alcohol and therefore there's fewer drunk people in the early hours falling over each other.

Or it means that families can go for a meal, which keeps the money coming in, but it's less appealing to people wanting a night out.

Covid is not infectious before 10pm.

Just guessing but is it maybe because it will restrict the amount people drink so they will be better at socially distancing? In my pubbing days I was generally rowdier later at night Grin

Isn't it obvious? Alcohol consumption makes people forget about social distancing, which is risky behaviour. So if the pubs shut earlier, there is less chance for people to get too drunk.

A lot of the nightclubs around here have opened up. No dancing, meant to be sitting at tables. But that soon goes out the window once the drinks are flowing. One has recently been investigated around here. 10pm is sensible.

because we is all children who cannot be trusted around booze, especially at bedtime!

After a few drinks people will now just be more likely to go back to someone's house to continue their night after 10pm.

CertainGecko · 17/09/2020 22:44

Won't people just drink earlier, or faster?

Maybe I'm just old. The young ones seem to start going out around 10pm these days whereas I was always already off my face by 10pm and looking forward to my walk home with my bag of chips after last orders!
