How does it work with cases in school?

Genuine question because I find it hard to keep up with all the guidance.
DS's friend, who he sits next to in school, is off today because his dad has coronavirus symptoms. The family has managed to get tests booked.
If DS's friend's test comes back positive I know the whole class will be sent home, but what then? Does our whole family need to isolate, or just DS unless he develops symptoms?

Just your DS but the person he sits next to shouldn't be getting tested unless he gets symptoms

Really? Thanks Dementedpixie, I thought from what his mam said they were all getting tested but perhaps it's just his dad. In which case I guess it will just be DS's friend who has to isolate and the class won't be sent home. It seems a bit odd though because kids don't usually get symptoms do they? It could be all round the class and we wouldn't know.

Yep just your son ,my son is self isolating, because someone in his bubble tested positive,we don't have to unless he develops symptoms

The dad should get tested and the family isolates for 14 days as thats the incubation period. If any of them gets symptoms then they get tested at that point. If the rest of the family gets tested without symptoms then a negative test would not bring them out of quarantine any earlier.
