Anyone heard anymore on this? Apparently amid the testing chaos, we’re now thought to be at 38,000 cases a day & CMO wants a 2 week national lockdown

@HannahStern

Johnson has emphatically said he's trying to avoid another lockdown.

That means another lockdown is as good as certain.

I agree. It will be sold as 'lockdown now to Save Our Christmas' (bread and circuses for the plebs) after Christmas we will go back into it
Tomatoesneedtoripen · 17/09/2020 08:28

but local restrictions are surely just closing pubs at 10?, among others

Oncemorewithfeelin · 17/09/2020 08:30

@Friendsoftheearth I’m also in Aus (south Australia)
Each state has their own restrictions in place and rules to follow. South Australia did have their borders open for a short period of time as did other states( apart from WA) but when Victoria had its second wave, the borders closed.

Day to day life is mostly as it was before COVID hit. They still are encouraging social distancing and there is hand sanitizer at the entrance of places. There is reduced numbers to places like zoos.
We have had a few big events cancelled or postponed.

I have hopefully attached the stats for COVID numbers broken down state to state.

Its ok Whitty advising another lockdown, he will be being paid no mattr what.

And boy does he earn well.

We aren't talking "MN high earner" standard though! Hmm

Batshitbeautycosmeticsltd · 17/09/2020 08:31

Sweetpea that's life. The air is full of flying glass. 'The elderly' may also have spent time in town centre with 5,000 people Hmm.

ProperlyPdOff · 17/09/2020 08:39

No, just no.
We have actually reached the point where we are locking up our children for 2 weeks at time (without being able to leave the house) without any evidence of infection, while the elderly and vulnerable are allowed to carry on as normal.
The balance is all wrong.

Malteserdiet · 17/09/2020 08:41

This thing just needs to be able to run its course now. Another lockdown just cuts down the numbers until everything opens again and then back up they come. Then what? Another lockdown, then open, then lockdown? The NHS capacity isn’t in danger, lots of the people currently infected don’t have it seriously and if they know they have it I’m sure 99% will avoid sneezing over their grannies. So for the love of all things sane, please let’s just get on with our lives like we did pre-Covid when heading into the cold and flu season without a second thought in most instances! Except this time we’ll probably be much more mindful about spreading our illnesses to those most vulnerable.

SA here too, we actually looking at many events running, providing no outbreaks

As of today I've read that cos Port get a home final, we are allowed 25.000 strong crowd at the footy in finals
The Xmas pageant should get 25.000 too at Adelaide oval
It looks like we will be a cricket hub at the oval again. They will also get crowds at games
New year's fireworks looking at going ahead with some tweaks, like encouraging of street parties in the city, shutting down roads so places can stretch out seating, fireworks spread across various spots in city.
I believe we also getting racing at "the bend"
Allowed numbers getting bigger

Dp flew to QLD last week to look at a house, border permits to and from took less than an hour to obtain. We one of the more open states if your also from a "cornoa almost free" state
Dd will even get a school camp this year too
Life for us is as normal as before corona, I've even got to go to the footy this year.

ProperlyPdOff · 17/09/2020 08:43

Currently we are sending whole year groups of 200-300 pupils home for 2 weeks if there is a single positive case in that year. Those children are stuck at home, cannot leave their house. Those 200-300 pupils have no symptoms and no test to show they are infected.
This is to protect others who are free to carry on as usual.

ProperlyPdOff · 17/09/2020 08:44

And of course if we had more testing - and that testing was accurate and results were fast - most of this disruption and viral spread could be limited.

ProperlyPdOff · 17/09/2020 08:44

So once again we are paying the price for the government's incompetence and reluctance to spend money on health and education.

RepeatSwan · 17/09/2020 08:46

Clearly we are seeing cases double every week so it won't be long until we are in a serious mess. A two week lock down now is surely preferable to a second twelve week lockdown in a month's time? If we were at 38k cases/day, in a week we are at 75k, and a fortnight 150k.

Unless the local.lockdowns work, but I get seem quite light touch, just shutting pubs early.

Guylan · 17/09/2020 08:51

As for long covid every virus has the potential to drag on long after the initial infection. I had pneumonia at 20, I was ill enough to be in HDU with the possibility of ventilation which wasn’t needed thankfully, it took more than a year for me stop feeling breathless all the time and I still get breathless in some exertions

@AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii, I do hear you and know severe fatigue can continue for a long time after severe pneumonia/lung scarring and this probably will be the cause of symptoms in some people in the LongCovid category.

However, if you read the symptoms of longCovid - a group of patient scientists have done one survey so far with more planned collecting data such as symptoms - for many it is not limited to poor lung capacity and the associated severe fatigue and breathlessness. They have neurological symptoms of brain fog, concentration challenges, memory loss, seizures, dizziness and problems with balance, various forms of insomnia, and others. TAll their symptoms, not just fatigue, can get worse if they exceed their reduced activity limits including a low grade fever returning.

eufycurious · 17/09/2020 08:53

OP, I think you should ask MNHQ to amend your post as Costello has now confirmed that Whitty does not support this.

SweetpeaOrMarigold · 17/09/2020 08:54

@Batshitbeautycosmeticsltd not really the same at 2am though is it? Not a mask in sight and all squashed in together.

MrsPerrywinkle · 17/09/2020 08:56

This was all based on a tweet from a member of ‘independent SAGE’ he has since said he got it wrong..... we have headlines based on a tweet from this group of people, crazy.

You were there? How naughty! Smile

People are going to be people. Locking them up forever, the social distancing, masks, etc., it's not going to work long-term, Covid or not. People are just going to have to accept this. None of this goes hand in hand with the social nature of people, all the guilt-tripping and shaming or banning of socialisation isn't going to work. That's life.

LouiseNW · 17/09/2020 08:57

Givemeabreakpls

This guy is a member of Independent Sage, isn’t he?

No, he is the Chief Medical Officer and Government’s Chief Medical Adviser.

mac12 · 17/09/2020 08:58

Costello has just tweeted this, retracting last night’s lockdown claim: twitter.com/globalhlthtwit/status/1306496397529751552?s=21
Adding to general air of WTF is going on? I want to know where the figure of 38,000 daily cases is from. That’s what worries me, is that figure anywhere near the truth because if it is, that’s really bad. I am worried we are flying blind in this & don’t actually know the real infection rate.

Costello on twitter ( original source of rumour) now says another person has assured him Whitty is not planning another lockdown.

Agreed, tweeting gossip is really not helpful at this stage. We'll end up with panic buying all over again etc.

Has he said he got it wrong?

I agree it’s crazy it become headline news

LouiseNW · 17/09/2020 08:59

Beg your pardon, Givemeabreakpkease completely misunderstood what you were saying (thought you meant Chris Whitty 😂)

MarshaBradyo · 17/09/2020 08:59

Should have scrolled down

How irritating

Livelovebehappy · 17/09/2020 09:00

I will absolutely lose my shit if we are dragged into another lockdown! As I suspect a lot of people will. We were happy to do what it takes at the beginning to get a plan in place to sort this out, but due to wrong decisions and inaction, to have to go back to lockdown is just unthinkable.
