Anyone heard anymore on this? Apparently amid the testing chaos, we’re now thought to be at 38,000 cases a day & CMO wants a 2 week national lockdown

So we have a 2 week lockdown and cases fall for a while. Then what? They rise again as soon as things reopen. We’re back to square one.

Meanwhile businesses are shuttered again, hundreds of thousands more lose their jobs.

It is not a sustainable solution- what we need is a test, track and trace system that works and has the capacity required.

I’m worried about Covid, I’m worried my kids get it and are unlucky to be in the few that have a serious response or my parents get it or any family or friends get it. I’m also worried what the consequences of a second lockdown would be - lots of unemployment, poverty on the rise and what would happen to an already damaged economy. You don’t have to be in one camp or the other, it’s not all or nothing. We all have to get through this with very different concerns and priorities.

FreeZagariRatcliffe · 17/09/2020 22:05

Would hate another lockdown. We are being really sensible. The fines might be worth paying...

borntobequiet · 18/09/2020 05:28

Any illness can have long term consequences, but that’s not a good reason for minimising or dismissing the known long term effects of a new illness.

WhentheDealGoesDown1 · 18/09/2020 06:04

Looks like it’s likely to be curfews and closing some hospitality is what is being discussed not full national lockdown

iVampire · 18/09/2020 06:04

Yo wind back to the starting premisr of the the thread, FT is carrying an article today saying that ‘top scientists’ are calling for a 2 week lockdown

To coincide with autumn half term

WhentheDealGoesDown1 · 18/09/2020 06:12

Autumn half term is over a month away, anything could happen by then, they would have changed their minds umpteen times.

WhentheDealGoesDown1 · 18/09/2020 06:13

Well as long as it doesn’t coincide with my holidays, looks like it will be ok though

iVampire · 18/09/2020 06:18

(Spotted other thread about this now)

weepingwillow22 · 18/09/2020 06:20

The problem is if they do 2 weeks in late October it will not be enough for the numbers to drop so everything will neeed to stay closed.

We saw last time that the most effective lockdowns were imposed BEFORE the exponential growth in numbers and then everything could open up much quicker.

They don't seem to have learnt anything from our last experience with this.

weepingwillow22 · 18/09/2020 06:21

They either need to lockdown now or not at all.

Areyousureted · 18/09/2020 06:55

The bbc is reporting a lockdown is being proposed but with most businesses and schools open. But I am just not sure if a half measure like this is pointless

MarshaBradyo · 18/09/2020 06:56

Across the country?
Areyousureted · 18/09/2020 06:58

England wide it says

Stinkyguineapig · 18/09/2020 07:13

....so what will be closed....?

Areyousureted · 18/09/2020 07:17

Not sure !

Areyousureted · 18/09/2020 07:18

Just hospitality I think

WhentheDealGoesDown1 · 18/09/2020 07:30

So eat out to help out then we shut you down

WhentheDealGoesDown1 · 18/09/2020 07:33

Hancock on BBC now

milkjetmum · 18/09/2020 07:42

Agreed @weepingwillow22 why can't they learn from last time, waiting for half term just like they tried to wait for Easter holidays Confused

Someone really needs to explain exponential growth and the lag period to them again. Totally agree that things will stay flat in a 2 week lock down and so will need to be longer if they are trying to reverse the rise rather than just hold stable

The more they mess this up now the longer is it all going to rumble on. And we're not even at usual flu season and have been blessed with sunshine so can be outdoors, will be very different in a rainy nov

Areyousureted · 18/09/2020 07:45

To be honest I would be totally on board with a two week lockdown but I am not sure half the country will agree and that is a problem

DonnaDonna01 · 18/09/2020 07:50

Two weeks will not make a vast difference and lockdowns do lower the exponential growth but has soon as we come out of one it starts to grow again. Lockdowns are not to stop the virus they are to save the NHS from being overrun. I think the government need a plan and a good one because so far this ain’t working.

RoseAndRose · 18/09/2020 07:57

It'll be over half term to prevent families from areas with high rates visiting extended family or taking holidays across the UK.

With a hope for a let up in general transmission rates.

MiniTheMinx · 18/09/2020 08:00

October half term is too late. Scientific advisors (according to BBC) are predicting huge hike in deaths by end of October. Cases are doubling every 7 days. If they believe a short sharp lockdown can work then they need to institute this now if they want to prevent their predicted huge hike in deaths.
