Just a heavy cold?

DD (15) came home from school in Friday with a bit of a sore throat. Over the weekend throat has got worse, runny nose one min, blocked the next. Bit of a temp - currently 37.4. No cough to speak of, occasional little one. Going to keep her off school tomorrow to see how she is after another day resting.
I’m inclined to think this is just a cold - mindful of unnecessary tests being taken. What to do?

My daughter was the same. Keep her off and see how it goes. Monitor her temperature. Get a test if it climbs. Don't send her to school for now.

The official advice is to take a test if you have a fever, so I don't think it's an unnecessary test, particularly bearing in mind that Covid symptoms are often mild in young people.

Well my dd didnt have covid and her temp was this. Saying that, it only lasted a short time then went down permanently. 37.4 is not a temperature in children. Anything over 37.5 is.

37.4⁰C isn't a fever. For covid I think they say temperature over 37.8⁰C. I wouldn't be jumping to a test just now

37.4 isn’t a temperature. “Normal” range is 35.5 to 37.5.
At our school (Scotland so back weeks ago) most had a day or so off to check it was just a cold then back as normal. This instructed by scot gov.

My son started with these symptoms yesterday (+ his sense of taste has been affected). Tried all day and night yesterday to get a test none available. My daughter has now got the same symptoms except her sense of taste is normal. Tried all day today and still trying now for both of them, still says none available. Looks like we'll be self isolating.

DD came home with a full blown cold on Friday and it's clearly been a bad cold all weekend - watery eyes, runny nose, sneezing, headache, sore throat and feeling generally miserable. Now she's started coughing now and again, just a dry tickle. She always gets like that with a cold, she has no fever and still has her sense of taste. But I'm worried in case people will think because she's coughing she has it. She feels much better today after sleeping a lot yesterday and is pretty much back to normal apart from looking a bit pale, a red nose and this occasional tickly cough...

Doesn't tick the symptom list for "should get test". Hope she feels fine tomorrow.
