Negative result but still coughing-school?

DS started a cold on Wednesday. The cough appeared on Thursday, so we kept him off, tested and it came back negative yesterday.

He's still coughing. Should we send him to school tomorrow? I've emailed the school his test result but can't speak to anyone there before we have to make the decision.

He had similar in March that we couldn't test and his cough lasted a good 2 weeks.

People get coughs and life must go on.

DS had glandular fever this time last year. Before I knew what he had, I kept sending him back to school whenever he seemed better and he kept on relapsing. He developed a cough at school on Wednesday, tested Thursday, negative result Friday. The guidelines here in Ireland are to keep him home until 48 hours after his symptoms have gone. He's still coughing, so I'll be keeping him home. Even if they weren't the guidelines I'd keep him home as after last year, I'm not risking him not getting fully recovered and relapsing. If he seems better and develops a cough again, then that means he has to be tested again. I won't risk putting him through the test again in short order if I can help it. And I definitely won't risk him infecting someone else at school and putting another child through it.

Is it not 48 hours after a temperature has gone rather than all symptoms? The advice says coughs and loss of smell/taste can last for weeks afterwards
