People are just going to not bother getting tested

If they can’t get a test, surely people will think sod it and not bother.

I’m so angry with the government for not sorting their act out. It’s about time they were held accountable. In any other profession they’d have been sacked a long time ago for utter incompetence.

This is before you take into account all the people who can’t afford to self isolate.

If government want people to do this they need to pay them full pay.

AIBU?

Yes @FippertyGibbett we got a request through the post as part of a survey. Random people selected to see how prevalent it is in the population

middleager · 13/09/2020 08:47

*Also (different point) if for example you test positive, isolate, recover, go back to work or school....if you were contacted by t and t a few weeks later, would you have to isolate again? (I guess kids would as the bubbles work as a whole)

I'm in Birmingham area with more than 1,000 cases in the past week, including at BOTH children's schools now.
There is a chance my children could be off school repeatedly as they are both in year group bubbles of 150-200.

CrunchyNutNC · 13/09/2020 08:47

shamrock

If you had all the symptoms that doesn't sound like a cold.

OpheliasCrayon · 13/09/2020 08:49

@PuppyMonkey

Shamrock, could you really not self isolate for the full 14 days just in case? What would be the consequences for your job etc?

It might be a cold. It might not be though.Confused

If she could I assume she would
Ellsbells12 · 13/09/2020 08:49

@Spudlet

I've been trying to get a test for ds since Thursday night. He has a cold... I'm 99% sure of it. I think we all had covid in February. But he is coughing and if you take an 'episode' of coughing as the odd cough, he's doing that more than three times a day so he should probably be tested to be sure. I started trying again at 6.20am - nothing still.

I now don't know what to do. Do I send him to school tomorrow or not? He's got no temperature, no changes to taste or smell, and the sort of mild cough you get with a cold... if we all have to self-isolate, he's going to miss his entire transition period into reception, and he has ASD - he needs that easing in time.

I'm so, so angry about this, I feel sick with it.

Same here just started year 1 do I send him in or keep him off ... winter going to be fun
Concerned7777 · 13/09/2020 08:51

@HelloDulling

Also if those results come back positive it's 4 days where their contacts haven't been isolating but carrying on as normal.

Their contacts should start isolating as soon as the person showed symptoms, not wait for the results to come back.

Agree the immediate family of the person getting tested need to isolate why waiting for a result but schools aren't going to isolate a bubble every time someone goes off for a test, so in the mean time those children are carrying on as normal for multiple days after a child has shown symptoms and then eventually got a result.
whatsleep · 13/09/2020 08:53

@Shamrocksunshine

I do not work in a school, and my manager wouldn’t give a shit (unfortunately) Infact I

think I got this from her....!!!

God, hope my kids don’t go to your school!!!

Shamrocksunshine · 13/09/2020 08:55

@PuppyMonkey

I do have a moral, social conscience. To put it into context, I work alone in my own office. There are members
Of SLT who have been in work this week with colds/sore throats. I’m not even on a permanent contract. If I start self isolating for 10 days with every cold I have, I can assure you I’m going to look like the worlds biggest piss taker. My husband has just been made redundant, I really, really need this job. I’m on a temp contract.

I have friends on zero hour contracts, this is really going to hit them in the pocket.

Fingers crossed they get their act together with testing. I for one, am more than willing to cooperate with correct procedures, except we don’t have that currently.

Actually I think it’s just your household that needs to isolate if you have symptoms (pre test results), not all your contacts
DianaT1969 · 13/09/2020 08:56

You sound very angry OP. Do you need a test? Maybe wait until you do and then post your experience. There are test shortages now, but there was also spare capacity for months previously. It's a pandemic. Best not to assume that everything is going to go swimmingly all the time.

whatsleep · 13/09/2020 08:59

Haha just realised you said you DON’T work in a school 🙈

niceupthedance · 13/09/2020 09:01

If you're trying to get a text I saw this hack on twitter... they may have fixed it now. Put in a random Scottish postcode in the website and it will generate the QR code you need to go to your local drive through.

People are just going to not bother getting tested
Cam2020 · 13/09/2020 09:01

I completely agree. Some people don't get paid if they can't go to work - are the government seriously expecting them to survive autumn and winter on no pay?

niceupthedance · 13/09/2020 09:02

*test

Shamrocksunshine · 13/09/2020 09:04

@CrunchyNutNC

You can have all the symptoms mildly. Low grade fever for a day, cold, mild sore throat, a cough that lasts a day. Now that could just be a cold, or it could be Covid. That’s the whole point of testing isn’t it? to find out, and to do the right thing.

I have been incredibly frustrated over the past few days, like I said I have tried extensively and failed.

I understand this is a laboratory issue, and they are trying to sort it. Well fingers crossed they do, and quickly.

MonicaGellerBing · 13/09/2020 09:06

My friends DC had a temp of 38.9 and a cough, also with snots sneezing and sore throat. She tried for hours to get a test couldn't get one so decided it wasn't covid and she's sending her back to nursery tomorrow.

MynephewR · 13/09/2020 09:08

DH and I both work in hospitality and get SSP if off sick, no option to work from home. If we all self isolate and wait for tests and results every time one of the DCs gets a temperature or cough (with a cold) then we wouldn't be able to pay our bills. If we could get same day tests with results within 48 hrs then we could just about manage it but not likely with the state that testing is in atm.

MonicaGellerBing · 13/09/2020 09:09

Also I don't know how we are realistically expected to isolate each time we have a cold. My DH is an agency worker, if he has to self isolate every few months he'd never keep his job. We are already in debt from waiting for furlough money to come through and we can't afford to get into more

Monstermissy36 · 13/09/2020 09:11

I work in a college, we do have a small supply of tests to give to staff if needed.

One of my colleagues took one and went home Friday with it. I think there is a lot of difference in access to tests depending on where you live.

Spudlet · 13/09/2020 09:13

I can’t even get the website to accept that my postcode is a real postcode now... it definitely is Angry

Tried the Scottish thing and for a moment thought we might get a home kit, but then it said there were none available.

Thank goodness for this world beating system, who knows where we’d be without it Angry

Trackandtrace · 13/09/2020 09:29

Ffs those planning to just go back to work, send kids back without a negative test or completing isolation period.
This is why my children havent returned to school because you cant teust others to do the right thing.
After shielding for 5 months we were told school would be safe for our shielded child thank god we ignored that 650 odd schools with known infections and god knows how many without positive tests and carryying on as normal

mrshoho · 13/09/2020 09:32

Schools have been sent a small supply of tests. An amazing amount of 10 in total so obviously will be using sparingly. It is a joke!

justanotherneighinparadise · 13/09/2020 09:33

It’s unworkable without availability for regular testing and quick results. If every teacher in my child’s school gets a cold, can’t test and then isolates for 14 days the school will shut. Same for workplaces and hospitals. What a total fucking shit show.

I agree. If I had a child that was vulnerable there’s no way in hell they’d be at school.
OpheliasCrayon · 13/09/2020 09:39

But what are people on zero hours contracts , or anyone who needs any amount of money ie most people... supposed to do in this situation. It's not right ...but it's unworkable. The test and trace isn't fit for purpose
.. people will be going to work when ill!
