People are just going to not bother getting tested

If they can’t get a test, surely people will think sod it and not bother.

I’m so angry with the government for not sorting their act out. It’s about time they were held accountable. In any other profession they’d have been sacked a long time ago for utter incompetence.

This is before you take into account all the people who can’t afford to self isolate.

If government want people to do this they need to pay them full pay.

AIBU?

And it's now been revealed that private companies are unable to deal with the volumes they are receiving either.

I'm astounded.
BatShite · 15/09/2020 16:45

Yup, this is what will happen, and is likely already happening. People are not going to be trying at 6am every day for hours to try and get tests..they will just decide if they feel 'ok' and go with that tbh. And I cannot blame them. The testing fiasco is ridiculous, as is the government moaning that those without symptoms are getting tests, when they were bloody told to do so! Also, given what..50% of cases are asymptomatic but can apparently still spread, relying on only symptoms for tracing/testing is stupid IMO.

BatShite · 15/09/2020 16:46

The latest sin is to 'game the system' whereby you enter the postcode of another area hundreds of miles away which allows you to get a test just down the road, which if you put in your own postcode would not be available to you.

Maybe they should fix the fucking system then, so that if you put your real postcode you are offered one near you, not 200 miles away?! God, people are using common sense, to get near testing centres, and are still wrong..

Matt Hancock. "When you have a free service it is inevitable that demand will rise"

Cunt!

Does he think people are getting it done for a fun day out? He’s a thick as shit twat.
HeIenaDove · 15/09/2020 17:12

Its the Tory view of people making itself known again. They said the same thing about food banks. That people were using it because it was free.

Hancock................your mask has slipped!

Lemons1571 · 15/09/2020 17:18

It was free during the summer and demand was much lower? Because it was summer and no one had the “back to school” bugs. Is the man hard of thinking?

HeIenaDove · 15/09/2020 17:34

So people are in the wrong if they get a test and in the wrong if they dont. You are right OP. Many wont bother.

Splendidseptember · 15/09/2020 17:37

It really is hard to comprehend. Why didn't they stagger years going back, week by week to ease into the new term and the hit to everyone's immune system?
Sort out the wheat from the chaff, ease dc back without crowding, and help ease the pressure on the testing system?

Maybe Dr jenny harries advised the government that there was no evidence that dc catch things in Sept and that it would be moot because they are all sitting facing the front? Angry

Splendidseptember · 15/09/2020 17:38

Helena like my good friend today.. They will... Try.. Call All day whilst feeling ill, drive somewhere on the off chance and be turned away as not booked.. Then.. Give up.

HeIenaDove · 15/09/2020 17:41

They are also expecting people to drive while ill. So what happened to their rhetoric of protecting the NHS. Its not protecting the NHS to increase the chances of RTAs

RedToothBrush · 15/09/2020 19:02

I'm not sure what is a worst idea. Not bothering to get tested, or turning up A & E trying to get a test...

MadameBlobby · 15/09/2020 19:15

Unless this is sorted out people are in no way going to isolate them or their household for 10/14 days on the off chance they might have Covid. Most people I know will happily do it awaiting test results but if you can’t get a test, or if you do and the result takes days to come people will think fuck it and go out if they feel better. Of course they shouldn’t but there’s only so far people are going to put their own lives on hold effectively doing the government’s job for them.

What annoys me is we will likely end up in lockdown not because it is unavoidable but because the government can’t get the basics right. What a clusterfuck

This testing mess is actually worse than I imagined it would be. I thought we might get closer to half term before it started to unravel. The testing or lack of will be the reason for a second lockdown if it comes to that. The government can go on about the people breaking the rule of six and crowing about how they will prosecute but in reality this not the major factor.

Shamrock I'm glad you got the test finally and hope you don't have to wait too long for the result. It's crap that you had to jump through hoops to get it. I feel there are going to be many many people in your position over the Autumn/Winter months.

MNnicknameforCVthreads · 15/09/2020 22:16

OP here, I can’t promise I’ve read every single post, but it seems fairly unanimous that people agree the testing situation is a shitshow and, despite not exactly condoning it, we can’t really blame people for not getting a test.

You can’t get a test if you can’t get one!!

The level of incompetence within this government is Something Else.

100% this @mrshoho

HeIenaDove · 16/09/2020 00:44

I worry there will be civil unrest if there is a second lockdown. I cant see people putting up with it again.

Snailsetssail · 16/09/2020 07:28

For every person with symptoms they don’t manage to test the contacts are not traced and potentially continue spreading the virus. It’s all well and good saying they can just stay home for 14 days, but in a school particularly there are lots of others that could be unknowingly spreading it because the positive one hasn’t had a test to trigger track and trace.

Lemons1571 · 16/09/2020 07:30

Well they’re definitely not going to bother if there are no tests to get anyway!

BertieBob · 16/09/2020 07:33

I agree. I'm a teacher and I've noticed a shift in attitude already. Many parents are now refusing to get their children tested. Having to get my own children tested I know the frustration. Give it a week or two and it will be silently spreading through schools untraced.

mrshoho · 16/09/2020 07:34

Yes exactly and we were assured it was safe to send all 8 million school kids back to school, all at once, with no social distancing, because the test track and trace would kick in and quickly isolate infections. And how we laughed and laughed and laughed...

Exclusive: Teachers Could Sue Gavin Williamson Over Test And Trace Failures
Teaching union reveals Salford schools have test requests turned away, and 600 pupils in Bury are self-isolating

Education secretary Gavin Williamson has been warned he could face legal action from teachers after fresh Covid test-and-trace failures left schools unable to check if pupils have got the virus.

The teaching union NASUWT has written to Williamson to state it could sue over a breach of a duty of care and personal injury to staff caused by the reopening of schools without proper safeguards.

And in a separate letter to schools minister Nick Gibb, the union’s general secretary Patrick Roach has revealed that a dedicated testing centre for schools in Salford has had to turn away requests because of a surge in demand.

The letter, seen by HuffPost UK, states that “the number of symptomatic pupils and staff has increased to such levels that the testing site has been unable to cope with demand and has stopped taking referrals from schools”.

With the news that track and trace isnt working and if the rule of 6 doesn't work it will be interesting to see what happens. The government has said it will close school last of all but in practice in many areas lack of testing combined with staff shortages could see schools closed before we get to the stage where they decide we need to impose other restrictions in order to 'keep the schools open'.

It strikes me we are now headed for a second lockdown either by accident or design because the government have lost control of the situation.

In that light my attitude is to send DS to school for as long as possible if he is well enough because if he gets something, its cos hes got it from school anyway (i dont work and dh works from home and since hes gone back to school we haven't really gone anywhere / seen anyone / done anything). I think the growing attitude will be paradoras box has already been opened so its almost pointless to do differently.
