In what order do you think restrictions would be brought back in?

I am just wondering what would be first. Closing cafes and pubs? Closing sports buildings? Closing schools? I know a lot of people think these should now stay open and economy needs to move on. But if numbers start rising again exponentially the government will probably need to react.

WFH was gradually happening - its just evolved very quickly due to covid - that is one genie I don't think will ever be put back in the bottle

MrsFezziwig · 12/09/2020 22:44

I agree indoor meetings with friends must be very high risk. Almost surprised that hasn’t been banned already actually. I only meet friends outdoors and it works fine. It’s a small sacrifice to make really.

I doubt it will work as fine in November. And I would have thought it was less dangerous for a few adult friends to meet inside than for different family groups to go round to each others’ houses - much greater ability to stick to proper social distancing.

I live alone and I’m fed up of being at the back of the queue. Don’t mind doing my bit so schools can go back, but now that they are back I don’t think different families’ needs to socialise with each other trumps my need to see a few people every so often.

The problem is there aren't the resources to police meetings in the home. This means the government won't be able to effectively stop meetings in the home and private gardens. They'll have to introduce measures they can police such as shutting shops, pubs, sports teams etc.

People are tired of the lack of leadership. The government has lost the good will of the people. Measures aren't strict enough in schools or workplaces. People think that if they are safe in these places, they can meet with others outside of school or work. The truth is they aren't safe in schools and workplaces but it is a tolerable risk if and only if, they avoid risks elsewhere in their lives. Obviously it's extremely difficult for anyone to get their head around this and the government has made very little effort to square it with people; instead trying to insist schools and workplaces are magically protected. People will do as they see fit now - taking their lead from Dominic Cummings and others and we will have to bring back closures.

  • Households not allowed to mix in homes (except support bubbles/carers)
  • Restaurants/cafes takeaway only
  • Stricter enforcement of social distancing in pubs, legal powers to revoke licences if patrons don't comply
  • WFH recommended where possible
  • University courses online where possible
  • Non-essential retail closed, public transport recommended for essential journeys only
  • Secondary schools part time
  • Pubs takeaway only
  • Gyms, sports teams etc closed, people encouraged to stay home except for essential journeys
  • Secondary schools online
  • Primary schools online

...would be roughly the order I would do it in if it were up to me, God knows what will actually happen though.

MadameBlobby · 13/09/2020 02:16

I doubt there will be national restrictions closing anything. The restrictions will be on mixing in private residences I reckon. It could be cut to no indoor meetings in houses.

They won’t want to pay for more furlough and there will be uproar if they close millions of people’s works and don’t pay for any support. They won’t want to close schools either but I think they may go part time soon. There may be local more stringent restrictions

EmilyDickinson · 13/09/2020 02:25

I agree with your list pyschomath

I would want to see a greater emphasis on mask wearing too so that wearing them in indoor settings unless it’s impractical becomes standard eg staff as well as customers in shops, visitors and tradespeople entering homes etc

RedRiverShore · 13/09/2020 06:59

All socialising between friends and family will be stopped before anything involving schools and businesses, though places like beauty parlours and gyms may close as the government doesn't care about those. They won't want to close pubs too quickly. Schools will end up being part time, and it is part time not blended learning as pointed out on another thread as a lot of children are excluded for whatever reason from learning at home

MarshaBradyo · 13/09/2020 07:06

Wfh, no mixing with other households

Schools stay open and businesses too

RepeatSwan · 13/09/2020 07:19

I honestly don't know. I see France is making plans for shutting schools and has extended furlough.

We have a major problem, in that keeping schools open is clearly a huge benefit on a societal level - but is also the biggest risk to families following the guidance as it is where they have no option but to come in contact with the families not following guidance.

There are therefore big ethical issues with compulsory attendance at school once cases are high.

I see people say 'there'll never be another lockdown' and I think don't be so certain.

The government hasn't got a clue what to do.

OpenlyGayExOlympicFencer · 13/09/2020 07:50

I would expect restrictions that don't affect the economy first, ie no more social gatherings in private homes at all. If the evidence didnt support it, and I see no reason to believe Boris that it does, we would be lied to, in order to justify it.

Nat6999 · 13/09/2020 07:52

I live in an area of concern, we are one step away from being locked down again. The problem is that the area lockdowns are not full lockdown like we had nationally, just a few measures the limit transmission, everywhere is still open, people are still going to work & school, using public transport, shops are still open, other than not being able to socialise, not much is different. Does anyone else think that if numbers continue to increase we could end up back in full lockdown?

OpenlyGayExOlympicFencer · 13/09/2020 08:04

National, no. I think local full lockdowns are more likely.

ParisianLady · 13/09/2020 08:05

Social contacts, then stuff like sports and gyms, then pubs, then other cafe/restaurants switch to takeaway, and schools as an absolute last resort. I would expect them to stay open tbh

BillywilliamV · 13/09/2020 08:11

Some of you are REALLY loving this, aren’t you?

RepeatSwan · 13/09/2020 08:11

I did read though that there are not really many places without concerning rate rises now.

We can only have local lockdowns if the problem is local.

Yes some places are at a lower level - but the cases are increasing at the same rate (i.e. doubling every right days currently) so why would you wait if it is inevitable they will have to go into local.lockdown in a bit? All that does is mean more people are infected by the time you do finally respond.

They said they'd lockdown if R went above 1 for this reason.

feetfreckles · 13/09/2020 08:13

I'd like to see things to make it easier for people to apply the rules

Extended furlough for specific sectors ( or extended furlough but some sectors not allowed to claim if its easier)

Guaranteed full wages for anyone who is self isolating

MarshaBradyo · 13/09/2020 08:13

Who in particular?
RepeatSwan · 13/09/2020 08:14

I can assure you I fucking hate it. I hate the feeling of not knowing what I'll be able to do at Christmas, of not knowing when my dh's business can restart fully, and not knowing if one of the grandparents will be shielded again. I'm not even sure if they prefer to shield or not.

I find the accusation anyone is enjoying it really really distasteful.

TheDragQueen · 13/09/2020 08:15

There isn’t going to be another lockdown. No country on the planet can afford this. There will be localised lockdowns. School will remain open.

TheDragQueen · 13/09/2020 08:16

Oh, and a lot of you are enjoying this. It’s worse than the Daily Mail comments section and that’s some achievement. Fearmongering at its finest.

Israel has gone into a second lockdown

Be specific, which posters exactly?

I’ve stated school and businesses open, if others think differently so what? I still don’t think it will happen. Just gloss over it if it irks you so much.

TheDragQueen · 13/09/2020 08:18

You must have started salivating when you read that.

RedRiverShore · 13/09/2020 08:21

Government will take the easiest path for them as they have Brexit to worry about now, but it will be easier to spot if they are misbehaving with the rule of six.

GreenGoldRed · 13/09/2020 08:21

Looking at local lock downs it will be

Can’t mix with other households indoors
Cant mix with other households outdoors
Restrictions on pubs and cafes (only table service/curfews)
Close personal services (eyebrows etc)
Other beauty services, gyms
Cafes pubs and restaurants
