According to Tory Fibs this is an understatement - will schools be able to continue to be open as normal at this rate? Is it actually safe for families with vulnerable members to send their kids to school? We’ve already picked up a cold and have been back for a week.

However you do it, it will never be "safe", the majority of children are still able to get an education of some sort, and schools like everywhere else will have to muddle along the best they can.

Rossita · 12/09/2020 18:31

🥱 yawn

Pinkmakeupbag · 12/09/2020 18:35

Ffs 🙄

Atalune · 12/09/2020 18:35

I think that people will have to give home working and blended learning a really good go for the next few years. We will have to change how we work and educate our children and give schools and local authorities the tools and funding to do that.

Things like making sure children have laptops and internet. Making sure teachers can deliver online sessions via zoom or what have you.

It CAN be done but the government must support teachers and families to deliver it. And the most vulnerable in our society should be given the extra support they need.

Special complex need education and close contact needs to be rethought and those with medical conditions so they do not lose out. It’s not impossible.

I feel angry and upset that children are missing so much. The government must act.

What does ‘school infected by Covid’ mean? Single case, multiple cases, evidence of in-school transmission, Covid oozing out of the walls?

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 12/09/2020 18:38

How many schools are there in the UK op?

Surely your 643 means nothing unless you contextualise it?

Jrobhatch29 · 12/09/2020 18:39

This. Context please.

Something needs to be done quickly before it’s too late. Either go to blended learning than keep numbers down or fully remote learning or a mix of both. Parents will have to adapt.

herecomesthsun · 12/09/2020 18:39

I imagine it means at least 1 case. It's useful information, given the current state of testing, and the lack of a centralised arrangement to tell parents the number and locations of instances in schools.

SisyphusAndTheRockOfUntidiness · 12/09/2020 18:41

We absolutely need DD to be back in school. We are waiting for an ASD assessment for her (been waiting approximately 3 years). Because she's got no formal diagnosis, we currently receive no support for her. Even if her school intermittently opens & closes for the forseeable future, it would be better than what has happened this summer.

MillieEpple · 12/09/2020 18:41

I think theres about 30,000 schools

SaltyAndFresh · 12/09/2020 18:42

Parents will have to adapt.

I got a pasting on here for suggest that parents would need a Plan B. Schools simply can't facilitate parents' work commitments (that shouldn't mean that women have to pick up the slack).

GoldenOmber · 12/09/2020 18:44

I don’t think the problems with ‘blended learning’ over lockdown were really because parents just weren’t trying hard enough or couldn’t be arsed to adapt.

notevenat20 · 12/09/2020 18:45

Google says 32,770. Given that children rarely get ill and seem to transmit much less to adults than adults do to each other, the only interesting question is how many teachers have got covid from being in school

Wbeezer · 12/09/2020 18:45

In my health authority schools have been back for 5 weeks, we had one new case yesterday. Im not panicking yet.

Solasum · 12/09/2020 18:46

Google suggests there are 32270 schools in the Uk.

Even if the whole of each affected school was shut down, that would be 2%. I don’t know for sure, but am guessing that not all year groups are shut down in most of those schools.

That means the vast majority of children are currently receiving the education they should be. That is a good thing OP. There were always going to be cases

didireallysaythat · 12/09/2020 18:46

I can't teach my son Art GCSE. I'm a science major. Doesn't matter how much time I have, whether I can fit it in between working from home etc, I'm not artistic.

dementedpixie · 12/09/2020 18:47

My kids school has had 1 case that I know of so far. It has been open since the middle of August

dementedpixie · 12/09/2020 18:48

and the case was in a different year group so.my children were not affected by it

Kazakaren · 12/09/2020 18:48

The kids need to be back in education. If vulnerable families are struggling with this then an alternative plan needs to be found for them. Online learning or something. But we can't carry on in lockdown any longer. The country will never recover.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 12/09/2020 18:50

Rounded up, that's 2% of schools.

GoldenOmber · 12/09/2020 18:53

And is that 2% of schools which have had a case of Covid ever, or 2% of schools which have a pupil who is positive at the moment?

dworky · 12/09/2020 18:54

@Rossita

🥱 yawn
Yet you're still here.
PickAChew · 12/09/2020 18:54

So what are your ideas for rethinking special complex need education, @atalune? I have a 14yo with severe complex needs and he has not been able to access anything for 6 months.

Beebityboo · 12/09/2020 18:59

I found the yawn emoji really distasteful. It IS worrying that vulnerable families are in this awful position where they are forced to choose between school places and their physical health. The Government talked a lot of shite about schools being "covid secure" and shocker! It's taken a week for the wheels to come off. Parents, teachers, we all have a right to be concerned. Stay off the bloody thread if you have nothing of value to add and go gaslight somewhere else.
