According to Tory Fibs this is an understatement - will schools be able to continue to be open as normal at this rate? Is it actually safe for families with vulnerable members to send their kids to school? We’ve already picked up a cold and have been back for a week.

Teens can be taught on line with live lessons and normal interaction.
There has to be a will, within the school to facilitate it.
Then once the school get the ball rolling other things come into play, equipment, home WiFi.

Generally the people who want parents to “adapt” have younger kids who are logging in to Times Tables Rockstars. Not teens who need actual teaching of GCSE Spanish / A Level Physics. And by the way I quite like being able to pay my mortgage.
And probably have at least one if not both parents able to wfh....

After only a week or two and then they take it home to their parents who have been told to get back to the office. It soon spreads around again,

Maybe and maybe not. First of all we would need to know they caught it in school in the first place. I don't believe the ONS (or anyone) has published a figure saying there a 793 schools where children have caught covid at school.

Second, child to adult transmission seems much harder than adult to adult transmission. This is why very few teachers have catch covid from school (as far as we know) in countries where schools have been open for longer.

My local fb is full of talk about how to access tests, confusion, people can't get them... Dc with some symptoms... Others colds..... It's utter gridlock chaos.

Same in this area. There are probably so many more schools affected than reported as there will be DC at home unable to be tested.. unless they are taking them into account in this?

DonnaDonna01 · 14/09/2020 18:49

Totally disagree that it’s down to the schools to get things rolling and then equipment and wifi follow. If it was possible it would need to be lead and enforced by the government and the WiFi and equipment would need to be the first thing to be implemented and ensure it’s accessible to all pupils before the school would need to act.

This is kind of the key bit in your post noteven

as far as we know...

As a working parent of two year 10s I couldn't agree more.

@notevenat20

Google says 32,770. Given that children rarely get ill and seem to transmit much less to adults than adults do to each other, the only interesting question is how many teachers have got covid from being in school
It's not the only interesting question is it?

How many students have infected family members?

How many families are now in quarantine because a child has caught it in school?

How many parents are now off work because a primary age child is in quarantine because their bubble has collapsed?

Just to give a positivity boost to this depressing thread. My children have been back FIVE weeks and absolutely no issues , no cases, Nada. May change but hardly the negative depressing this thread would have you believe.

lurker101 · 14/09/2020 19:14

This article with data released by the Dept for Education is very interesting - in the two weeks schools in NI have been back 88 pupils have tested positive for Covid (out of 300,000 pupils) in 64 schools.

This equates to 0.03% of pupils, which I would imagine is a similar proportion to the current instances of Covid in NI.

The fact it’s 88 cases limited to 64 schools implies That a number are potentially siblings and also shows that in 2 weeks there has not been a massive rampant spread.

System is creaking at the seams. Locally so many more schools with pupils and staff with COVID symptoms than in March.
No tests available, long delays in returning test results, positive tests unable to be reported to PHE so no advice on what to do next in schools.
Staff isolating, small schools with no teachers, teachers isolating at home with their own children, support and admin staff missing. Grinding to a halt.

Right. That was an overstatement.

disorganisedsecretsquirrel · 14/09/2020 20:48

Doesn't matter for most.. they get a sniffle and get over it.. the only ones that are affected are the CEV..

They should be locked down. I am CEV and won't be out from now on.. GOv should bank roll then 230k working who cant WFH and are CEV and let the others get the economy going to pay for it..
