According to Tory Fibs this is an understatement - will schools be able to continue to be open as normal at this rate? Is it actually safe for families with vulnerable members to send their kids to school? We’ve already picked up a cold and have been back for a week.

@applemoonorangesun

Well kids (many are young adults who transmit the virus as easily as adults) are in bubbles of hundreds, I’m not really sure how no transmission would be likely?
If there is one single confirmed case in the school DD will circulate details to all parents and urge all parents not to send any child.

a) how does your DD have all parents' contact details?, and
b) why is it up to her to 'urge all parents not to send any child'? Surely it matters how the school is handling the situation? Does your DD know better than the public health people who'd be handling the situation?

I wouldn't be happy if there was a confirmed Covid case at my DC's school, but I wouldn't panic and yank them out either. I would want to know what the actual situation was - if it was an isolated case in another class, if it was a case in my DC's class, if it was multiple cases spreading within the school.

ugh, messed up the quotes there!

Add to that the teachers are being reprimanded for catching the virus. Unbelievable, you couldn't make it up.

They should be complying with the measures in the risk assessment to reduce transmission. If I broke my workplace rules on SD I’d expect reprimanded.
Tfoot75 · 12/09/2020 21:11

So basically your headline might be '643 children (or maybe some of those) test positive for covid in a period of 2-3 weeks'.

So effectively waaaay less than the general population.

Surely others can see this is a completely pointless statement or statistic? As they all (presumably at this stage) did not catch it at school.

The only relevant issue is whether, or how many people, these 643 cases pass it on to within the school environment?? If its none or very low, let's just carry on. If the 643 pass it onto another 10,000 children then we'll fucking worry won't we? The first bubbles are isolating so we'll know very soon whether there's an issue or not. At the moment, we've no idea, apart from there appears to be no issue at all in either Scotland or Leicestershire, where schools have been open for several weeks already.

Sorry, think some people are just totally nuts and thick as shit.

madcow88 · 12/09/2020 21:13

My dd school has it. A teacher who has been teaching all bloody week tested positive on Friday and she was actually in school on Friday too!! How the fuck does that happen? She was clearly poorly enough to get a test but not poorly enough to stay away from our children!! Beggars belief now my child needs to stay home for 14 days and wait to see if she gets poorly... My child is vulnerable and has been shielding throughout. I'm furious really.

QuestionMarkNow · 12/09/2020 21:15

I would only be happy with that if the risk assument was meaningful @MadameBlobby

If it is expecting a teacher to SD in an environment that doesn’t allow it. Or is expecting the teacher to basically do nothing else outside school
Then the reprimand isn’t acceptable.

HalfPastThree · 12/09/2020 21:15

Tory Fibs have been sensationalising the virus and schools for months. I have no idea why. It's really a non-issue.

Sweden had their schools open for the whole epidemic and no child died. And there are no reports of a child infecting a family member who died. It's the same all over the world. We can't cower under plastic forever.

MarshaBradyo · 12/09/2020 21:16

TFoot

Exactly.

IncidentsandAccidents · 12/09/2020 21:29

This was inevitable given the increase in community transmission - current cases in schools are effect rather than cause. Having said that, I do think we should make changes to help schools stay open as long and as safely as possible without having to resort to blended or online learning. Ecv families should be given the right to temporarily homeschool with support. School staff (primary and secondary) should have the right to wear masks if they wish. Students in all secondary schools should wear masks in communal areas. These all seem such obvious measures to take.

mumwon · 12/09/2020 21:58

@Tfoot75 I love the assumption that its only 1 dc or teachers case that closes the school - as just because a dc doesn't die doesn't mean they aren't really sick
there are no stats for people or dc who are quite ill for along time with long term affects who don't go into hospital
It happens to quite young people with no known health conditions

Keepdistance · 12/09/2020 22:08

1 that is only the ones able to get tested
2 if 40% asymptomatic then that percentage more are still at school spreading it.
3 we wont know how many secondary cases there actually are as contacts arent allowed a test!

It's airborne sk if people have to work indoors it's hardly their fault they catch it.
4 encourage staff to wear masms and maybe all kids wont be off isolating all the time.
5 2% of schools isnt really that low. Some havet been open 5d yet
6 stricter rules on bubble sizes of 30 for all or less.no changing desks all over the place. Kids with sore throat stay off to see if cough develops.
7 we need to be able to elect central HE.
I have asthma i cough with every single cold. As do the kids pretty much. We are never going to be in! 9d in 14d out is not fair on the child.
8 fair enough some people dont give a crap but the concerned ones shouldnt have to be stuck in a bubble with them. Im not choosing soft play or parties etc but im exposed as if we are anyway

Kazakaren · 13/09/2020 06:35

There may well be but not enough resources for every school age child in the country.

It's not needed for every child in the country. Only those families who are vulnerable. The majority can still go to school. And there's a huge amount of resources that have sprung up over the last 5 months as a result of covid. Far more than there ever was before. And will no doubt grow even further on demand.

RepeatSwan · 13/09/2020 06:44

@notevenat20

Also what about the families that can not afford the equipment for online learning?

Are you one of those families? There has been a lot of talk about this but I am not sure how real it is. How many households don't have any internet connection because they can't afford it, including on a mobile? I think the govt was going to fund laptops too.

I don't think lack of equipment in some houses is a reason not to move online as the government should provide what is needed - but I think it is disrespectful to the many families in that situation to say this is 'not real'.

Poverty is real, prevalent and increasing.

Having 'access to the internet' meaning some mobile data on a phone is very different to good broadband and a dedicated laptop.

The government laptop scheme was, surprise surprise, a shambles.

MarshaBradyo · 13/09/2020 06:52

Scotland has been back for weeks? How has it progressed?

Could only find FT article FT concerns dissipate

lifesalongsong · 13/09/2020 06:54

It's airborne sk if people have to work indoors it's hardly their fault they catch it

If this is in relation to the post about the school staff becoming infected on a training day then whilst fault maybe isn't the right word it does raise serious questions about the management in that school. Millions of employees have worked indoors throughout the pandemic with measures to protect themselves what went on in a school building with a tiny number of people in it that there was so much transmission would be what I'd want to know if if I was a parent there.

AuntieStella · 13/09/2020 07:00

funny how it becomes and issue if non disabled children might not be able to access an education for a long period of time when nobody gives a shit about children with SEN who go without a school place for years in some cases (even before Covid). Just saying

Well said

Doodledoom · 13/09/2020 07:34

@SisyphusAndTheRockOfUntidiness

My son has a formal autism diagnosis, there is no support at home once they have a diagnosis.

There was also no support during lockdown from the school or anyone.

notevenat20 · 13/09/2020 07:40

The Dutch public health authorities have a nice and clear page on children, Covid and schools

www.rivm.nl/en/novel-coronavirus-covid-19/children-and-covid-19

It generally seems pretty sensible. Also

“ All schools in the Netherlands will be reopening again after the summer holidays. After double-checking with all 25 municipal public health services (GGDs), it has become apparent that there were no reports of possible COVID-19 clusters that had a link to schools or childcare facilities (or temporary childcare) before the schools closed on 16 March. After reopening the primary schools and childcare facilities, a few reports have come in regarding infections among employees at schools; RIVM National Institute for Public Health and the Environment has not received any reports of employees who were infected by children (based on data as of early June 2020).”

DonnaDonna01 · 13/09/2020 08:37

@kazakaren I agree it could be done for vulnerable groups but my post was to the comment that schools should not be open at all for the next couple of years and all pupils should have online and blended learning. That is a mammoth task.

Trackandtrace · 14/09/2020 16:37

793 and rising also mamy unable to get tests too

notevenat20 · 14/09/2020 17:04

793 and rising also mamy unable to get tests too

But how many teachers have caught it from children so far?

annabel85 · 14/09/2020 17:13

After only a week or two and then they take it home to their parents who have been told to get back to the office. It soon spreads around again,

Lemons1571 · 14/09/2020 17:20

Generally the people who want parents to “adapt” have younger kids who are logging in to Times Tables Rockstars. Not teens who need actual teaching of GCSE Spanish / A Level Physics. And by the way I quite like being able to pay my mortgage.

Splendidseptember · 14/09/2020 17:21

My local fb is full of talk about how to access tests, confusion, people can't get them... Dc with some symptoms... Others colds..... It's utter gridlock chaos.
