Civil Unrest?

HannoK · 11/09/2020 09:09

If freedoms and liberties, and basic services continue to be denied to us, I predict mass unrest starting in the autumn and winter among those whose lives have been trashed for a virus that causes little more than a cough in most cases.

People are not going to put up with this shit for much longer.

I've stuck to the rules 100%, but that was too protect the NHS. But why, my elderly mother desperately needs face to face help with various medical issues and is getting nothing. I'm fucking fuming and reaching the end of my tether.

I find that those who make these grand predictions are actually somehow hoping for them in some way! Get a grip people!

Willbob · 11/09/2020 09:20

I read that this predicted following a no deal Brexit.

WellRiddleMeThis · 11/09/2020 09:23

Yeah cos that’s going to get doctors back to doing face to face isn’t it!?

PickwickThePlockingDodo · 11/09/2020 09:29

I agree OP, it's getting ridiculous now.

WellRiddleMeThis · 11/09/2020 09:38

What’s ‘getting ridiculous now?

Worldgonecrazy · 11/09/2020 09:43

I don’t think there will be unrest, just most people will pick and choose and break the law in a specific and limited way. A bit like doing 33 in a 30 zone 😷

I expect people who have lost love ones or are suffering from long COVID may not agree with the flippant remark about it being little more than a cough. And without appropriate public health procedures the outcome would have been much worse. Some very difficult choices have had to be made about healthcare but the priority has to be managing the pandemic.

Friendsoftheearth · 11/09/2020 09:47

Nope.

People in the main will be sensible and adjust their lives, just as they did before. They may well be fed up, sick to the back teeth of restrictions, but ultimately most will be of average intelligence and will understand why they are being asked to make the changes and will respect them accordingly.

AutumnLeavesStart · 11/09/2020 09:48

What are you talking about? Are you suggesting you personally are planning to riot because your mother’s medical appointments aren’t face to face? If not, why do you think other people will?

toolatetooearly · 11/09/2020 09:49

No way, that's never happening. We're a nation of rule-followers... plus far too lazy and apathetic.

TheClaws · 11/09/2020 09:51

OMG, not another one! What is it about 'pandemic' and 'public health measures' you don't understand?

frozendaisy · 11/09/2020 09:55

Only the French can riot properly!

Friendsoftheearth · 11/09/2020 09:59

Only the French can riot properly!

and even they aren't bothering!!!! Grin It is a guaranteed way to catch covid!!!

knittingaddict · 11/09/2020 10:00

Oh do fuck off, OP.

My sentiments exactly.

friendlycat · 11/09/2020 10:01

Do yourself a favour and grow up.

rosie1959 · 11/09/2020 10:02

You are correct lives have been trashed by this virus but what point is there in civil unrest or riots Do you think the virus will go away
Put more pressure on our emergency services yes that will be immensely helpful
We could just open everything up and do away with all these rules and see what happens

MarshaBradyo · 11/09/2020 10:03

No really not going to happen

Outraged posts on SM will go up but that’s about it

TempsPerdu · 11/09/2020 10:04

I think people are feeling more defeated than rebellious at the moment tbh. A second full lockdown and crashing of the economy might prompt some degree of civil unrest but the current nebulous, constantly-changing, divisive measures are confusing and bewildering people rather than inciting open rebellion (quiet non-compliance with the more illogical regulations is definitely happening though). I think civil unrest/disobedience needs people to unite around some kind of common cause, but people are so isolated right now, and people’s experiences of lockdown are so different, that it’s hard to see it happening.

I do see quite a lot of generational resentment bubbling under the surface however, as younger people slowly wake up to the fact that their futures been completely shafted by Covid, with a probable no-deal Brexit and accelerating climate change being added into the mix. It’s a dangerous time.

MarshaBradyo · 11/09/2020 10:05

Other bad behaviours will go up.

Children at higher risk. Alcoholism etc before civil unrest.

WellRiddleMeThis · 11/09/2020 10:06

Well op hasn’t bothered to come back!

Tootletum · 11/09/2020 10:11

Everyone seems very happy to give up their basic freedoms, so you won't get far with this thread. Iain Martin's article in the Times today was on the same topic. Proportionality of legally binding restrictions is no longer justifiable. But 60% of the population would apparently be quite happy to have a curfew introduced.

crazychemist · 11/09/2020 10:11

@Worldgonecrazy yep, agree with this. People can't be bothered with civil unrest, but will just ignore the law as it suits them.
smilingthroughgrittedteeth · 11/09/2020 10:13

What the fuck is wrong with people? There is a global pandemic, 1000's upon 1000's of people have died a pretty horrible death, there are many more 1000's of people who have long lasting serious after affects like heart, lung, kidney failure, children have lost parents and grandparents, parents have lost children and because people are having to alter their lives a bit and it is just a bit, you can still go out, you can still go to the pub/out for dinner/shopping, you can still see your friends and family just not all at once ALL you are being asked to do is wear a mask, wash your hands, work from home if able to and stay 2m away from people unless your wearing a mask then you can get a whole meter closer.

My understanding is that my local hospital has started face to face appointments and my own GP surgery has been fantastic throughout and not refused to see anyone if needed although in most cases a video appointment has been perfectly adequate and got my children the required assistance they needed and my asthmatic child was seen face to face without question so id say the NHS is doing their best in difficult circumstances and the least the public can do is support them by helping avoid a second wave.

We have financially suffered, we miss our family and friends, home schooling wasnt fun, my sons referal for asd has been held up probably for another 6mths at least so i have in no way found lockdown fun or easy but fgs civil unrest for having to wear a mask and limit the amount of people you see in one go, how utterly selfish and ridiculous can people be Angry

YummyJamDoughnut · 11/09/2020 10:17

If everything else the government has done so far hasn't sparked people into protests, then I doubt anything they do now will either.
