Current levels of infection: 7,007,039
Number of mild infections: 6,946,649 (99%)
Number of serious/critical cases: 60,390 (1%)

Do these numbers make anyone else think, what the fuck are we doing damaging the economy, our children's future and mental health for figures like this?

I agree the government does need to really help them, as you say, not by sending a couple of bags of essential shopping but by making sure they get priority over and above everyone else and getting financial assistance at least to the amount that they are used to etc... perhaps they government could pay their wages and make sure that their employer keeps their job pen for as long as possible.

They should be given priority over everything so parents can stay home and stay safe.

Their siblings would have to have school work sent hone etc or do it online and follow the class that way perhaps. All equipment should be paid for ie laptops etc so they can all keep as safe as possible

@EDFG

TableFlowerss · 09/09/2020 15:23

They shouldn’t have to worry about anything, other than keeping their immediate family safe and particularly their vulnerable DC

Hyperfish101 · 09/09/2020 15:26

Not this again. Yes numbers seem low. They are low because they are being managed by restrictions. Remove restrictions and they will increase exponentially and probably not be very manageable at all.

The implications are enormous though.

There's another thread running where a de shielded person isn't being allowed to return to work and that is affecting their professional registration, some of the shielded children or siblings will be preparing for exams and won't get the full education that they need - how will they be taught and who will teach them? How about access to services like dentists, opticians, even hairdressers?

People have been championing the detrimental effects on mental health of the general lockdown - what effects do you imagine this isolation will have especially as they see peers carrying on as normal?

I honestly think the only ethical way to do this is to put in place restrictions for everyone and try to suppress it as much as possible. We can't end up with a two tier society - the shielded and the not - with the implications that brings.

Hyperfish101 · 09/09/2020 15:31

The jury is still out n Sweden too.

shamalidacdak · 09/09/2020 15:56

That's 1% too many

NikeDeLaSwoosh · 09/09/2020 15:59

@MorrisZapp

I'm in favour of euthanasia, yes. It wouldn't have suited either of my grans because it would have been against their religious views, regardless of their health issues.

But we had long conversations about this when both grans were suffering near the end. We didn't want them given eg antibiotics, as they no longer wanted to be kept alive. However, doctors are no longer able or willing to risk legal suits in this way so both of my grans unfortunately had over a year of desperately unhappy life to round off their otherwise glorious lives.

Me too.

Just speaking personally, NFW would I expect to steal my DC's future to pay for me to have even an extra 20 years.

In a choice between my life and that of my DC, I'd sacrifice mine in a heartbeat.

That is disgusting.

Amongst those people would be children receiving treatment for cancer - that would be successful, would achieve a cure and they'll live normal lives. Or transplant recipients.

Amongst the vulnerable group are children with diabetes. Tell Steve Redgrave that he should think himself lucky that he survived a year or two after diagnosis. Has he lived a life of illness and disability?

Your attitude is still disgusting towards the more severely affected or disabled people. It is not for you to decide whose life has worth or who is able to be sacrificed so that some of you can go to the pub.

Well said.
Cornettoninja · 09/09/2020 16:25

Honestly I think some people enjoy this, Facebook practically had people pissing themselves with excitement at the new rules today

On balance this is evident on all sides though. There’s a gleeful ‘we know better, you’re all idiots’ tone to a lot of posts calling for normality to resume. There’s not much moderation knocking about for people to find.

Hyperfish101 · 09/09/2020 17:13

Agreed @Cornettoninja

Hyperfish101 · 09/09/2020 17:18

Also the restrictions are pretty much the bare minimum at the moment. Not hard to comply with. Wear a mask, don’t mix in big groups. 🤷‍♀️

LadyofTheManners · 09/09/2020 17:32

Not to mention how many of us will lose loved ones to all the illnesses that the NHS are currently not treating fully due to covid paranoia.
With the new statement today that restrictions will almost certainly be in place for at least 6 months, that will mean it is over 2 years since DS will have seen his lung consultant. And that's if we manage to get an appointed as soon as restrictions are lifted
It means children possibly missing out on nearly a year of school.
Many industries will be finished, including what I work in as it's the arts and entertainment industry.
I am all for caution but this is daft now.

Hyperfish101 · 09/09/2020 17:46

What’s daft? Wearing a mask? Limiting crowds?

Kids are back at school, we’re being encouraged to go into work, go to eat etc.

midgebabe · 09/09/2020 18:00

I also have had enough, but I also see that that is irrelevant, there is no point making things even worse

It's a very difficult balancing act...keeping the economy going ( enough) , keeping the nhs going, keeping people alive , letting people live . No one persons situation trumps anyone else's. Looking at deaths across the world where action is being taken, and where reports and data may be inaccurate, is a silly way to try to justify changing the current approach. Misusing inaccurate date ...yeah

We can't go back to the world we knew, it has gone

Oblomov20 · 09/09/2020 18:20

Yes. It's all a drama. Hardly been any cases in our county, south west of f London.

Manolin · 09/09/2020 18:23

Kunt?

Manolin · 09/09/2020 18:24

Sorry wrong thread..! Blush

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 09/09/2020 18:30

😂

Porcupineinwaiting · 09/09/2020 18:31

@LadyofTheManners which restrictions stop your son seeing his consultant? They must be specific to your Trust (or to him if he's shielding), here appointments are moving again. The fact that he hadn't seen his consultant for 18 months pre COVID suggests there was already a problem tbh. How often is he supposed to be reviewed?

If it's more than routine (ie there's a problem) will they not even offer a zoom consultation?

My ds1 was referred to orthopedics 10 days ago and his appointment will be in 3 weeks. And his issues are chronic not acute.

easythatsfragile · 09/09/2020 18:34

UK population currently around 66 million.

1% of that is 660,000 people. Two thirds of a million people. OK if they all get critically ill and possibly die, is it?

FromEden · 09/09/2020 18:34

We can't go back to the world we knew, it has gone

Talk about hyerbole. This is but a blip in the grand scheme of things. Some places are already back to normal, others never changed anything. Get a grip.
