Until he has a Covid test. No tests available in Scotland currently! His temperature was 37.8.

School isn't going to use an in ear thermometer, would need a clean cover for every child plus you couldn't stand at a distance to use it.

OP please confirm what method was used to take temperature at school and at home. You cant really get a test in the absence of any of the 3 symptoms

MitziK · 08/09/2020 17:51

@Hereinthesticks

Why is it clear the OPs presumably non calibrated thermometer is the one that is correct? As I understand it, the point-at-the-forehead type of thermometers will give a high reading if you have been running round like a loony for 30 mins at breaktime, and that is not a fever. You need a thermometer that actually goes inside the body, e.g. ear, to get an accurate reading.
Which is why you take it again ten minutes or so later.

Every kid I've checked so far has been between 36 and 36.4, including one that had come straight in from PE and one that was wearing enough clothes to go rough sleeping in the Arctic.

Mind you, I've sent kids home before now on the basis that the old thermometer strips said sort-of-37, but that was because the same strips would say mine was 34 Celsius, so whatever their actual temperature was, it was 3 Celsius higher than somebody who didn't feel ill. Or I could feel the heat off them from 5 inches away. It took a lot of negotiation to get approval to order a non contact thermometer (the ear ones were permanently out of stock), but they are so much more reliable than mercury ones.

Chig · 08/09/2020 17:53

I couldn’t get a home test ( SE England )

Checked back 2 hours later and I could

Cakestandkitchen · 08/09/2020 17:55

I don’t know what school used. Never thought to ask. We have one that sits under your tongue. Like this.

I'm horrified for you all that this is the situation.

We have the same rule in Australia, but at least we can get the fucking tests done! Had to get done last week - boy was off sick with mild cold symptoms, gave it to me (thanks kid), we both got tested on Tuesday and had the neg result on Weds. Yes I do know that we have a much smaller population than the UK but Sydney has a higher population density than London, so I don't think it's that different but obviously we have far fewer positive cases.

I have NO IDEA how the UK has fucked it up so badly, I really don't. Well I do, of course, but it's ridiculous that they have.

I hope you can get a test very soon for him.

nosswith · 08/09/2020 18:01

ThumbWitchesAbroad you have hit the nail on the head, it's the time to get tested that is the issue.

purplepingu · 08/09/2020 18:03

I got offered a test in Fife today and I'm in South Yorkshire!

Grrretel · 08/09/2020 18:10

What prompted the school to take his temperature?

MeridaTheBold · 08/09/2020 18:12

That's odd. Glasgow had lots of empty slots yesterday and the test site was deserted so I seriously doubt it's suddenly been inundated today. My friend booked a test yesterday morning, was tested yesterday afternoon and results back in less than 24 hours so there doesn't seem to be a processing issue either.

Cakestandkitchen · 08/09/2020 18:15

@Grrretel

What prompted the school to take his temperature?
He felt sick at lunch time.

@Fennelandlovage - I got offered Oldham! A hotspot as well

Thisisnotnormal69 · 08/09/2020 18:20

Agree with others, please write to your MPs and get them to raise the issue, the more pressure that can be put on them + then government the better

SunshineOutdoors · 08/09/2020 18:23

I had this a week before lock down. Ds sent home because of a high temp but I retook immediately after I got him home and multiple times after and it was consistently under 37 degrees. I had to take dd home too and despite me phoning them 10 mins after I got them home to explain I was told I had to keep them off for two weeks (all schools shut down a week later). So we got an additional, unnecessary week extra of lock down, yay! I’m fully expecting this to happen again when mine go back tomorrow. Fortunately I can wfh but really don’t want to go back to ignoring my kids for hours on end....

Hereinthesticks · 08/09/2020 18:23

School isn't going to use an in ear thermometer, I know, which is why the child should be collected if they feel ill (like in this OP's case, which we only just found out) and thermometers not used in schools. The OP is then responsible for taking her child's temperature in a scientifically sound manner and arranging a test if necessary.

DumplingsAndStew · 08/09/2020 18:26

I just checked from East Coast Scotland and got offered Glenrothes (27 slots available)

AbbieLexie · 08/09/2020 18:28

We're in Edinburgh but managed to get a test in Cockenzie yesterday. My OH tried several times before we were given a space. We have transport so travel wasn't a problem. Result back today and negative. Think we have the flu.

Fennelandlovage · 08/09/2020 18:36

Oh god it would be funny if it wasn’t so awful! Hope they sort it out soon but I’m not holding my breath.

Cakestandkitchen · 08/09/2020 18:42

We’ve got Perth tomorrow afternoon. Thank goodness.

Thank you all for your comments and suggestions.

roarfeckingroarr · 08/09/2020 18:56

That's ridiculous.

Newjez · 08/09/2020 19:09

You didn't give him paracetamol or ibuprofen?

Probably stating the obvious, but they will temperarily return a temperature to normal.

Saying that, mine had a temp of 38 a fortnight ago. Covid test negative. Right as rain the next day.

Clavinova · 08/09/2020 19:33

I really don't think the rest of Europe or other civilised countries have to get up at 5am or else all the tests are gone.

31 August;
"Queue waiting times of five hours for Covid-19 tests were reported in Paris this weekend."

"Waiting times of up to five hours were reported among “walk-ins”, but even those who try to book a test online may also need to wait 10 days or even two weeks before the earliest available appointment."

"One woman waiting in Paris said: “I’ve been waiting now for three and half, almost four hours. It’s scandalous.”

Kitcat122 · 08/09/2020 19:37

I had Covid and my temp was only 37.7. School is just trying to protect everyone.

Hereinthesticks · 09/09/2020 08:56

The title of that article states that France is targeting 1 million tests a day. Once again that is not remotely comparable to the UK situation where we can't manage 200,000 test a day (well, the tests may exist but the lab capacity to process them currently is not).

Stripedarmchair · 09/09/2020 11:47

Still trying to get a home test. Has anyone managed to get one over the last 24 hours? It doesn’t even go to the walk through option anymore just:

“This service is currently very busy

More tests should be available later. If you cannot book a test now, or the location or time are not convenient, try again in a few hours.”

I’m trying constantly. When are these magic few hours where it will change?

EDSGFC · 09/09/2020 11:51

It's not even the waiting to get a test, it's waiting for the results once you've done it.

I'm still awaiting results now from a test I sent very early Monday but that was actually requested on Friday morning.
