Until he has a Covid test. No tests available in Scotland currently! His temperature was 37.8.

@starfishmummy

According to my local facebook group people from our area are also being offered Telford. Rumour is its a computer issue.
I've just had a nosy and get offered Telford and Lee Valley Athletics for an address in the NW of England and same again for an address in NE of England. It must be very unlikely that those are the only two places for areas which are 200 miles apart.
starfishmummy · 08/09/2020 16:27

Oh. News just popped up on my phone

People across the UK are unable to get coronavirus tests because NHS laboratories are backlogged in processing them. The director of testing at NHS Test and Trace, Sarah-Jane Marsh, apologised and said: “All of our testing sites have capacity, which is why they don’t look overcrowded, it’s our laboratory processing that is the critical pinch-point.” Health Minister Matt Hancock told the Health Select Committee when asked about Marsh’s tweet that problems with capacity would be fixed within a couple of weeks

dementedpixie · 08/09/2020 16:28

Just popped up on mine too

thereplycamefromanchorage · 08/09/2020 16:28

I think people experiencing this need to contact their MPs asap so it can be raised in the House of Commons. Access to rapid testing is essential, and there seems to be major issues with this currently.

ithinkiveseenthisfilmbefore · 08/09/2020 16:29

I'd challenge the school: your thermometer shows differently, quite differently, and he's absolutely fine otherwise.

dementedpixie · 08/09/2020 16:30

should have had it all sorted out before schools returned. Been big spikes in testing due to coughs/colds from schools going back

ponygirlcurtis · 08/09/2020 16:37

OP, I would come out and re-enter your details again. I am in the west of Scotland and took my DS for a test earlier this afternoon, which I booked this morning. For a while, the only test centres available were too far away - including one in Fife! - but I kept refreshing (or changing to Walk through test and back to Drive through test seemed to work better) and something much more local came up. They definitely seem to release the slots in batches at certain times.

Good luck. My DS only needed the swab up his nose because of his age, and didn't find it too bad (it's certainly smaller than his finger, which is permanently stuck right up there anyway).

AldiAisleofCrap · 08/09/2020 16:45

@Cakestandkitchen try downloading the Zoe app and putting symptoms in there. There will be a key worker option for tests .

Frazzled2207 · 08/09/2020 16:47

I'm also being offered Telford despite not being anywhere near! Not good enough. I bet if you're actually in Telford you won't be offered it.

Gingerkittykat · 08/09/2020 16:54

I got a test yesterday at Leys Park in Dunfermline, I logged on at 5am and got one for that morning. It's worth trying again in the morning, they had 55 slots at that time but I can imagine they will fill up quickly.

Hereinthesticks · 08/09/2020 16:58

I'd challenge the school: your thermometer shows differently, quite differently, and he's absolutely fine otherwise. seems reasonable. Your child shouldn't miss education due to an incorrect fact.

I really don't think the rest of Europe or other civilised countries have to get up at 5am or else all the tests are gone. Our government are failing at this in a massive way.

marcopront · 08/09/2020 17:00

@Onynx

Ring the school and ask them to show evidence of when their thermometer was calibrated. Tell them it is clearly wrong as your thermometer is showing his temperature is 36.2. Also how is 37.8 a fever?
Why is it clear the OPs presumably non calibrated thermometer is the one that is correct?
Devlesko · 08/09/2020 17:01

It's ridiculous, they'll never be in school once the cold and flu season start.
I'm lucky with dd school, they are isolated and then tested again.
If temperature remains high they self isolate at school.

Gingerkittykat · 08/09/2020 17:02

I just checked and was also given the test sites in England, what a difference a day makes!

TenhillPlace · 08/09/2020 17:09

In England, but ask school in Scotland, schools are issued with 10 home test kits for if families are unable to access a test.

I know, I know, 10 - not enough, but your school might just have one available.

josieflower · 08/09/2020 17:10

Hi, I'm just starting homeschooling. Does anyone know anything about music level 2 btec? My daughter really wants to take this but there is very little useful information (that I can find) about the syllabus or how to do this privately. Any suggestions welcome!

Myshinynewname · 08/09/2020 17:16

When I went on mid morning today it initially offered me sites almost 100 miles away. I clicked on the link to show sites further away and was offered an appointment just down the road. If you don't get what you want straight away it is worth playing around on the site and seeing if anything suitable pops up.

monty09 · 08/09/2020 17:16

My son got sent home this morning for having a temperature, we've been to a walk in test centre this afternoon. We are in England tho.

Hereinthesticks · 08/09/2020 17:17

Why is it clear the OPs presumably non calibrated thermometer is the one that is correct? As I understand it, the point-at-the-forehead type of thermometers will give a high reading if you have been running round like a loony for 30 mins at breaktime, and that is not a fever. You need a thermometer that actually goes inside the body, e.g. ear, to get an accurate reading.

Hereinthesticks · 08/09/2020 17:19

I actually had no idea that schools were measuring pupil's forehead temperatures. There are plenty of people who have a high core temperature anyway. It is just not scientifically sound to be denying children their education based on a questionable thermometer method.

Fennelandlovage · 08/09/2020 17:24

I am London and was offered Dundee as closest test today 😩. Have written my MP. Please all do the same to raise awareness. After 5 hours and Jon stop trying to get a test I finally got a home test. Never offered anything closer that 40miles away in Greater London - so probably 2 hours away in real terms. Very frustrating.

VividImagination · 08/09/2020 17:28

@josieflower post on the home education board link and someone will help you or if you have a local Home Ed Facebook group someone there is bound to know.

Pootle40 · 08/09/2020 17:41

Yeah like someone else he has no Covid symptoms - no test and back to school !

marcopront · 08/09/2020 17:45

I missed the part where the different thermometers used were described.
eeyore228 · 08/09/2020 17:47

I get the frustration but the fact that he’s eating a crunchie is irrelevant. My DH had it and was really ill. Barely left his room, I had it and didn’t even find out until I had an antibody test. Thankfully this was at the height of lockdown so we weren’t in contact with anyone. Now though people are milling about like there’s nothing wrong and if he comes into contact with someone else they might not be as lucky.
