Loud banging on the door this morning, as I wasn’t expecting anyone I ignored it. A card came through the door stating they want a gas meter reading. I opened the door as the man got to the front gate and told him I wasn’t going to let him in but could give him the reading if he waited there. He then says he can do it he’s not sick. The card he posted through the door even stated that no internal meter readings would be taken due to Covid and to enter them online. So I told him I would follow the instructions on the card and do it that way as were not allowing people in at the moment due to Covid. He then said ‘another waste of f*ing time’ and stormed off. I’m quite shaken up I think I should just let it be but my neighbour who witnessed it thinks I should report him at least to his company. Just drop it? Report him him? Let my energy provider know what the company they hired to take readings are like??

Report!

By law they have to see the meters every 2 years so if they haven't seen the meter for that period they may have to come in even if they generally aren't in cases where that period hasn't been reached.

Report him for the way he spoke. That said, I wouldn't bother opening the door to tell someone I won't let them in.

I’ve lived here over 10 years no ones ever even knocked on the door before to ask. I submit readings online and they ask for photos every so often. I’m not sure I would now answer the door to him with the way they behaved. I’m still shaking I don’t do confrontation, I do suffer from anxiety so now trying to calm down.

They’ve only asked for the gas meter not both which I think would be weird if they needed to see them. I opened the door to tell him I would read it for him and give him the reading.

Please report.

And even if he wasn't sick (and not everyone knows when they have it) he should respect your wishes.

"Loud banging on the door this morning, as I wasn’t expecting anyone I ignored it."

Not sure if that's wise...what if it was the police for example or some other kind of emergency. We once had a loud banging on door, it was gas people saying we had to temporarily evacuate the property due to a gas leak next door (terraced house). Another time police banged on neighbours door, no answer as she was out and so they smashed down the door to gain access! (Turns out they were looking for someone but got the wrong address, but if she had been in and ignored it she would have had her door smashed in when answering could have avoided that).

Please report it. I reported one once as he knocked on the door just as my daughter was coming home from school. She knew not to let anyone as was on her own, but he kept insisting. She said noone us in and I'm only 13. But he kept on at her saying he need to read the meter. Absolutely disgusting behaviour.

I live in a semi. Very edge of town type of thing. I only usually answer the door if I’m expecting a delivery etc when there is a knock at the door that I’m not expecting it’s always been an elderly neighbour from down the street and have always (even pre Covid) waited TIL she gets to the gate to open the door as her health has never been good since I moved in. The town I live in has a Facebook page it has a ‘spotted’ type comments section which we all laugh about as it’s so rare to see the police. When I lived at my last address in a city the police etc would always knock and then shout who they were. Don’t they do this any more?? I’ve rang my supplier who said they just requested a meter reading as I’d forgotten the last couple of months, they said to report it directly to the company as well

Report, report, report!

How stupid for him to say "I'm not sick" - yeah, that he knows of! He could be asymptomatic or in the infectious period before displaying symptoms for all he knows. Sounds like an absolute idiot.
