Am I the only one not to take a holiday abroad?

Is it me, or have all my friends seemed to have had lovely hot holidays abroad this year? We didn't book anything until a few weeks back and have just had 4 days in North of England. That was our only summer holiday as we worked all through the blasted heatwave.

Now all we can see on fb is photos of friends who have been to lovely hot sunny places for a week or two. Italy, Greece, France. Even my DS21 has just flown off to Amsterdam.

Were we wrong to staycation or should we just have gone abroad and hang the consequences? Beginning to think we missed something. Is there a pandemic or did we imagine it all (no - that's another thread!!)?

most people I know aren't and we all tend to travel a lot normally (late 20s early 30s).

But yes, the pictures of those who do really stick out. 😫

Vinoonasunnyday · 07/09/2020 16:10

We didn’t go but I’m sorry I never as most others did

Dds friends seem like they all did so they’re very jealous!

WunWun · 07/09/2020 16:10

I don't know a single person who has been abroad. I've not even seen any vague aquaintance on Facebook post pics of a holiday abroad.

Vinoonasunnyday · 07/09/2020 16:13

Wunwun

I do wander if they’re a huge regional variations

I’m near Liverpool and I know more who went away than those who didn’t

Plus almost everyone I know doesn’t wear mask, doesn’t distance and just wants life to return to normal. Most just think the whole things gone too far now. Whereas on Mumsnet I hear attitudes that seem alien to me but it’s likely visa versa

I haven't been abroad this year. I had somewhere long haul booked but it was cancelled by the travel agent. I've moved it to February. I will go if I can.

DarkMintChocolate · 07/09/2020 16:16

No, we didn't. We think its selfish, as we might be incubating it when we go, and therefore infect the locals; or we might bring it back with us and infect people here! IMO, had holidays abroad been banned at February half term, we might not have had such a bad epidemic?

Pinkmakeupbag · 07/09/2020 16:17

I don't know many who would go abroad this year.

Seems to be a certain type of person who has.

movingonup20 · 07/09/2020 16:22

Not been abroad, none of my friends have been abroad but dd19 is going next week against our advice however she's an adult so I get no say.

I'm fortunate that I was away long haul in February just when it was becoming obvious that things were getting out of control in Italy, and got back before things were getting tricky here so never was going overseas this summer, Scotland was lovely and empty where we went

dementedpixie · 07/09/2020 16:23

Our holiday in June was cancelled. Havent booked any other and have no desire to either

Gazelda · 07/09/2020 16:24

No, we've stayed at home other than 2 nights glamping.
We have a garden, so were able to enjoy the heatwave in between working.

I have a fair few friends and work in two places. The only person I know whose been abroad this summer was a colleague with elderly parents in Romania - she's been pretty much isolating throughout and wanted to see them before going back to work where there's lots of close contact and no PPE.

Have to say we're in an area where most are still living well within guidelines and being careful (and it's paying off with incredibly low numbers), so I think lots around us would be too cautious to go abroad (two I know cancelled their hols).

Qasd · 07/09/2020 16:26

We did as we booked a last minute trip to Portugal but actually do not know anyone else who has actually been (LOTS who missed out french breaks due to the quarantine change eurotunnel was looking like a very popular option before that)

madcatladyforever · 07/09/2020 16:27

No way am I going abroad this year, just can't be doing with the faff and cancellations and covid risk.

SusanneLinder · 07/09/2020 16:43

We were away in January just as Covid19 kicked off. Had a holiday booked for next month and cancelled thankfully as the country has seen a huge rise in infections and would be in quarantine both places ( there and on returning).
Spent the money on our house instead, so am good. Got a few days booked away in October ( but not abroad)

Inkpaperstars · 07/09/2020 16:55

We have not been away at all. Everyone I know who had holidays planned abroad cancelled them. I did hear from friend of a friend of someone who had travelled abroad. They caught covid, came home and gave it to their parents.

rainwaterflow · 07/09/2020 16:56

Same.

Almost everyone I know has been abroad, apart from two friends who are shielding.

I usually travel about once a month and am desperate to re-start, but I can’t see that happening in the near future.

We didn’t either as feel the same re unnecessary travel. Whilst I like a holiday, it’s a want not a need and can be forgone easily.
MorrisZapp · 07/09/2020 16:59

Were you wrong to staycation? Well obviously not, if you had a nice holiday! Or do you feel there's some kind of moral duty to go abroad each year? What a weird question.

Campervan69 · 07/09/2020 17:00

We went to Portugal with some friends and had a lovely time. Had to bring it forward 2 weeks in case we had to quarantine but in the end it turned out that they lifted quarantine while we were away so that was great news for us. Felt completely safe the whole time we were there no different than being at home. Plane was about 1/3 full and the airport was empty have never travelled so well in August with no queuing whatsoever. Everyone who was there wearing masks and social distancing. I feel more nervous going to the big Tesco near us to be honest.

TheEndisCummings · 07/09/2020 17:03

did not have any holiday. Not sure why really. I think because we have no car, we felt unsafe travelling on the UK or anywhere else.

Campervan69 · 07/09/2020 17:03

Oh and none of us have been at all ill. We knew we wouldn't take it there as have been WFH, observing all the rules and keeping ourselves to ourselves. We didn't live any differently whilst on holiday - private villa, rented car. There were and are no cases in the resort we went to and so we didn't bring it back with us either.

HairyFloppins · 07/09/2020 17:06

No we haven't and no one I know apart from my neighbour has.

Not had a single holiday even in the UK. Could not find anything decent that cost a bomb.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 07/09/2020 17:07

I only know two people that have gone overseas this summer.

emmathedilemma · 07/09/2020 17:07

I only know two people who've been and one owns the house they went to but they came back in a mad panic when the quarantine on return rules got brought in at short notice. I haven't even contemplated booking overseas travel, it all still seems too much of a changing picture, although I can see if people had things already booked then they might be financially left with a "use it or loose it" situation.

Batshitbeautycosmeticsltd · 07/09/2020 17:08

It's not a staycation if you are leaving your home to do it. That's a holiday. A staycation is day trips and sleeping at your own home.

We went abroad. Long haul. It was fine.
