Am I the only one not to take a holiday abroad?

Is it me, or have all my friends seemed to have had lovely hot holidays abroad this year? We didn't book anything until a few weeks back and have just had 4 days in North of England. That was our only summer holiday as we worked all through the blasted heatwave.

Now all we can see on fb is photos of friends who have been to lovely hot sunny places for a week or two. Italy, Greece, France. Even my DS21 has just flown off to Amsterdam.

Were we wrong to staycation or should we just have gone abroad and hang the consequences? Beginning to think we missed something. Is there a pandemic or did we imagine it all (no - that's another thread!!)?

I'm polishing my halo as we didn't go either.

Well not really. We only didn't go because money .... And also 2 of the kids' passports ran out.

NeverForgetYourDreams · 07/09/2020 17:16

Cancelled all ours and re booked for 2021. Fingers crossed

BBCONEANDTWO · 07/09/2020 19:53

No you are not the only one.

rosy71 · 07/09/2020 19:59

I only know one person who went abroad. We didn't go away anywhere. Most others seem to be the same. We did lots of day trips, mostly quite locally. We were lucky because we went away in February though.

lifesalongsong · 07/09/2020 20:02

Isn't foreign travel down by something like 70%, of course you aren't the only person not to have been abroad. I can only imagine that if you think that you must live a very different life to most people, is your circle mainly footballers and reality Z listers, they don't seem to have stinted on travel this summer Grin

Trikc · 07/09/2020 20:04

We taken a couple of holidays abroad. They were booked a long while ago and were to countries that heavily rely on tourism and which had Low rates of COVID. I don’t know if it’s selfish or not. We’ve not done anything that the government has suggested we shouldn’t. We’ve spent money and behaved as responsibly as possible.

If people think it’s selfish to holiday abroad in areas where there is a low level of COVID then do they also think it’s selfish to holiday in the UK. I’m not sure.

RiftGibbon · 07/09/2020 20:08

Haven't been abroad in a long time. Did take a holiday, hiring a self catering cottage in the middle of nowhere, which seemed like a safe option.
I can't say I feel I missed out
We got to do some countryside walks and have plenty of afternoons/evenings on the beach.

Discobar · 07/09/2020 20:09

The beaches abroad were much less busy than the photos of the UK ones and mask enforcement and safety measures far superior to the UK's What a load of horseshit is being posted on this thread.

Holiday abroad no more selfish than a Staycation

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 07/09/2020 20:16

Yep, just back from Turkey. Had an amazing time. Know lots of others who managed to get away as well.

Ilikewinter · 07/09/2020 20:23

We had 2 long haul holidays cancelled, was looking at the Canaries for Oct or Nov but doesnt look like that will happen now - unless quarantine is lifted, going to the south coast next week instead and praying for some sun because im soooo sick of this rainy murky weather.

Delatron · 07/09/2020 20:43

Agree about the risk factor.

Aeroplanes have filtered air so arguably safer than the tube/buses (plus ours wasn’t full).

We stayed at a private villa and mainly self catered. Ate outside twice. Island that we flew to had less than 16 cases.... Far more over here.

Felt safer there than the local Sainsbury’s.
Pleased we got away. We all needed a break and some sunshine. Kids had a great time, swimming all day. Just lovely.

If you didn’t want to take the ‘risk’ then that’s personal choice. But not all trips abroad are risky and selfish.

Youneverknowwhatyourgonnaget · 07/09/2020 21:02

I’ve just had a mini break in Italy. We got to take the kids to see some amazing places and also got to sit by the pool in the red hot sunshine eating some beautiful food and drinking lovely wine!! It was really quiet and everyone followed the mask rules and used sanitisers where encouraged to do so. I’m sure we was all far more safe than all being at home on a packed beach in the UK!! After such a terrible year we came home feeling so much happier and chilled!!

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 07/09/2020 21:07

No, our first holiday for 4 years to haven in this country was cancelled in April. Everyone else seems to have gone abroad

I did spend 6 hours in Dublin airport last month picking the dcs up, they spent 9 weeks there visiting their dad

MsTSwift · 07/09/2020 21:07

Still on a post holiday high tbh. We had a fantastic summer in Germany and Italy in the end managed to avoid countries that required quarantine and saw incredible places unusually empty. We kept it very flexible and travelled independently changing plans as we went.

annabel85 · 07/09/2020 21:10

@BabyLlamaZen

most people I know aren't and we all tend to travel a lot normally (late 20s early 30s).

But yes, the pictures of those who do really stick out. 😫

How good can it be in a mask everywhere anyway?
Timeforanotherusername · 07/09/2020 21:10

And they all felt safer abroad than when at home.

Yet we have lots if people testing positive after their holiday abroad..............

We cancelled our foreign holiday and went away in the UK.

Bol87 · 07/09/2020 21:11

I know plenty who have & unlike the judgemental knobs on Mumsnet, I don’t remotely begrudge them. They aren’t breaking any rules. And maybe they’ve helped save a few jobs in the airline industry. The comment ‘it’s a certain type of person who has’ is a vile comment. I know teachers, doctors & nurses who’ve travelled this summer. Are they on your ‘type of person’ list?! One of them is a very senior doctor in the NHS (friends dad).

We haven’t but purely cos we’ve got a young baby & never planned too. We’ve been away to the Hampshire coast for a week & got a couple breaks planned in Autumn to Centre Parcs & the Lakes. Again, it’s what we’d always planned to do this year so I’m not disappointed. Next year is our Honeymoon which I will be going on unless all flights are cancelled 😬🙏🏼🙈

PaperMonster · 07/09/2020 21:12

We went to our planned two weeks in Scotland. It was beautiful weather.

trilbydoll · 07/09/2020 21:13

We went to East Sussex (camping) and Wales (Travelodge). No glamorous holidays here Grin

MarmiteCrumpet25 · 07/09/2020 21:16

Our holiday to Majorca was cancelled in June. Since then we have had a night in a hotel on the south coast, 2 nights camping in a field with cows and a night in a premier inn near family. Not quite the same but haven’t fancied going abroad really b

herecomesthsun · 07/09/2020 21:17

wet weekend in Malvern here (we were happy though)

annabel85 · 07/09/2020 21:21

They aren’t breaking any rules.

This is the thing. If it's allowed/encouraged then of course people will. Whether it should have been allowed is open to debate but there's whole industries at stake which was why it was opened back up.

If it was 'borders and flights are back open for emergencies only' and people took the piss taking holidays then that's different, but it was encouraged through July particularly.

HowFastIsTooFast · 07/09/2020 21:22

We went to Majorca for a week and it was fantastic. Well worth the additional 'hassle' of masks and a Covid test on return. Distancing & cleanliness taken much more seriously there than it is where we live.

We took the opportunity to go when we did because who knows when we'll be able to go again. All of those people so confident that they'll 'just go next year' may be surprised to find their options for hotels and airlines severely limited, many won't survive this awful year for the travel industry.

HairyToity · 07/09/2020 21:23

We had a staycation, as did all our friends and family.

ChanceChanceChance · 07/09/2020 21:30

We didn't and pretty much no one from work did - except for the colleagues who were going to visit parents etc.

I'm trying to think who I do know who went!

Plenty of UK holidays instead.
