Nasal flu vaccine?

My 3 year old is booked in for this on Tuesday. I’m worried that side effects of this may mean we have to self isolate. I have also just read a comment on Facebook saying that it may make someone more likely to contract coronavirus?!

I don’t know whether he should have it or not, he’s never had it before, last year there was a shortage so I couldn’t get him an appointment.

My youngest son has had flu vaccine nasal spray already this year my older two have appointments next week. They’ve been having them for years. We’ve never had any side affects other than ‘ mum my nose feels funny’ . From what I’ve read and was told is that it doesn’t increase the chances of catching Coronavirus but can help reduce the guessing game if your little one does become ill so they know what treatments etc to try first while waiting for the test results.

I think this is probably referring to research showing an increased chance of children getting other respiratory illnesses. Obviously this now includes covid so it is no longer really true to say that they are all less concerning.
Here's a letter to the BMJ regarding it. Not sure who the guy is who wrote it, but should be able to trace relevant research from there. www.bmj.com/content/368/bmj.m626/rr

I think it's more impirtant than ever for ppl to have the flu vaccine. Its not going to nake you more at risk for Covid.

Surely with all the extra cleaning measures Flu will be on the decline!?

Idontbelieveit12 · 07/09/2020 09:20

Well you would think so! Apparently Australia not having as many flu cases as usual. I guess I’m just apprehensive as he hasn’t had it before so no idea what to expect afterwards. Thank you

Neither of mine ever had side effects from the nasal flu vaccine.

My DS who's now at secondary has had the flu vaccine since he was little. Only once did he feel a bit off for a couple of days after but not enough to keep him off school and it may have been something else. He's not able to get free vaccine this year so I'm paying for one at Boots for him. Flu plus covid would be awful. Having had flu myself badly and suffered for months after I make sure he gets his vaccinations.

I work in a primary school where the children have been receiving this for the last few years. It's quick and easy and none of our children have ever had any side effects. I hope this reassures you.

My DS has got ill after every nasal flu spray, horrible cold, temperature and cough. It's no coincidence that the one year he didn't have it, he was absolutely fine.

FourTeaFallOut · 07/09/2020 10:21

I'd just be really pleased that he is getting this so early in the year. That's brilliant with so much demand for it, last year my kids weren't vaccinated till November. Get it out of the way at the beginning of autumn before the flu gathers any momentum.

My daughters never been ill from the flu spray & I’ve never been ill from the jab.

I get so pissed off with people refusing to vaccinate because it gave their child a runny nose or feeling a bit unwell for a day. Same with moaning adults. We get one for free with work & half my team won’t have one cos it made them feel a bit unwell last time they had one. I’ve had flu, safe to say you feel AWFUL. I don’t think I’ve ever felt so poorly bar hyperemesis. I honestly thought I was dying at certain points. I had to go hospital because I couldn’t get my temp down from 40. I needed oxygen as I struggled to breath. I was so poorly. It took my months to feel fully well again. I dread to think of my child getting it, I really do. I more frightened of flu than Corona!

So please vaccinate. A few minor side affects are well worth your child being protected from the hell that is flu.

My DS will be getting his for the first time next Monday. I'm a little bit nervous but wouldn't contemplate not protecting him.
